Real Madrid in a 6-3 shootout with Valencia

This weekend was a weekend of comebacks as Kaka last seen in the year 156 BC crossing the frozen Pyrenees with Hannibal's army announced his return with two goals and two assists. Gonzalo Higuain, a little less distant in working memory scored a hattrick. Karim Benzema also joined in the goalfest. It was a touching sight to see all three share in the good vibes.

Real went up 5-0 on the board before Valencia registered their first goal through Soldado. The other goalscorers were Jonas and Jordi Alba but it was too little too late. The return to the Mestalla within a week proved to be a happy one once again for the Merengues. The only one looking a bit miffed was Iker Casillas, victimized by some easy giveaways.

More importantly, Real come into the crucial Champions League encounter with nemesis Barca this Wednesday riding some real momentum.

La Liga wrap: Five-star Valencia rout Villarreal

Valencia won the battle between third and fourth in La Liga with a 5-0 thrashing of Villarreal at Estadio Mestalla.

Hosts Valencia led from the 13th minute of Sunday’s match through a goal from striker Roberto Soldado.

But they had to wait until 11 minutes into the second half to double the advantage through attacking midfielder Juan Mata.

The second goal cued a collapse from the visitors, with Argentina midfielder Ever Benega making it 3-0 five minutes later.

Mata and Soldado both struck again in the space of a minute to complete the rout at 5-0.

The win sees Valencia stay third, but they are now just six points clear of fourth-placed Villarreal.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Atletico Madrid closed in on a Europa League qualification place with a 3-0 win at home to Real Sociedad.

First-half goals from Brazilian full-back Kasmirski Luis Filipe and midfielder Mario Suarez saw Atletico go into the break 2-0 up at Estadio Vicente Calderon.

Argentina forward Sergio Aguero added a third with 13 minutes remaining.

The victory sees Atletico climb to sixth place on the table.

Sociedad are 14th, five points above the relegation places.

A second-half strike from centre-forward Torres David Barral helped Sporting Gijon to a 1-0 win over Osasuna.

Racing Santander led against Levante courtesy of a Victoriano Nano own goal, but Ruiz Rafa Jorda struck in the last minute to grab a point for the visitors at El Sardinero.

Two of the bottom three sides gained a point with 0-0 draws at home.

Hercules are third from bottom after holding seventh-placed Espanyol goalless at Estadio Jose Rico Perez, while second-bottom Malaga also played out a stalemate against visitors Deportivo La Coruna.

Depor were a man down for the entire second half after defender Sanabria Ruiz Laure received a straight red card in the 45th minute at La Rosaleda.

Flagging Valencia look to end slump

La Liga outfit Valencia are looking to end their form slump with victory over Getafe on Saturday.

The club have been training all week in the lead-up to the match, despite a threatened strike over TV rights being a real possibility for this weekend’s fixture.

But the strike was blocked and the match will go ahead as planned, providing a terrific opportunity for Valencia to return to form.

Unai Emery’s side have lost three of their last four matches and slipped to fourth in the league in a disappointing last month for the club.

But they should return to the winners’ list against a Getafe side who have won just one of their last 14 matches in all competitions.

The reverse fixture was won by Valencia 2-0 back in November at the Mestalla.

Valencia hope La Liga matches go ahead

Valencia defender Angel Dealbert said training this week has continued as normal despite the threat of postponed fixtures in La Liga.

Football clubs in Spain are at odds with the national government because of a dispute over television revenue.Dealbert, 28, explained that the club has maintained the status quo as they prepare for Sunday’s trip to Getafe, which they hope will go ahead.”We are going to train for the weekend, and I hope that we play,” Dealbert said.”It is not us who decide, and we just have to train, wait and see. We aren’t talking about it at all in the dressing room. We want to play.”"We are training for this, and the process is getting drawn out, but it we haven’t spoken once about not playing. There is uncertainty, but we are training this week for the weekend.”Dealbert has featured in just eight La Liga appearances this season but said he wanted to remain at the Mestalla beyond this season.”I want to stay at Valencia, but I only have a year and one month left on my contract,” he said.”I hope to stay here, and I will fight next year to do so. It depends on the club. If they decided that they don’t believe in me or want to loan me out, then I will take that alternative.”"You never know what will happen in the future. The manager has treated me well. My intention is to continue at Valencia next year.”

Champions League: Schalke 3 Valencia 1

Schalke came from a goal behind to defeat Valencia 3-1 and book their spot in the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Ricardo Costa fired Valencia into a 17th minute lead which not only gave them the lead on the night, but also on aggregate, before Jefferson Farfan struck a sensational free-kick just five minutes before half-time to equalise for Schalke.

Mario Gavranovic put the Bundesliga side in front with his 52nd minute finish and after Valencia missed a hatful of chances to take the lead on away goals, Farfan completed the victory with a delicate chip in injury time.

The tie was well poised after Raul’s second-half equaliser for Schalke at the Mestalla saw the first leg end at 1-1, but it was the La Liga outfit who impressed in the early stages of the return leg in Germany.

Jeremy Mathieu saw his early shot flash just wide of the post, but Unai Emery’s men did not have to wait long for a goal, which was triggered by a wonderful piece of skill by Mehmet Topal.

Topal intelligently created space for himself on the edge of the area and delivered a bullet cross which was turned in by Costa to give Valencia the lead and an all-important away goal.

Schalke were shaken by the goal and could have been two behind if it was not for Christoph Metzelder’s last-ditch challenge to deny Aduriz after 21 minutes.

The hosts were eventually able to work themselves back into the match and should have scored through Gavranovic who missed a header, before the equaliser came when Farfan produced a superb free-kick.

The Peruvian attacker curled his set piece around the wall and despite the best efforts of Valencia goalkeeper Guaita, who got a touch, the ball thudded into the back of the net to level proceedings.

Energised by their goal, Schalke started the second-half well and claimed the lead when Gavranovic pounced on a Guaita error, with his shot hitting both posts before trickling over the line.

The goal seemed to fire Valencia into action, and Aduriz shot into the side netting on 56 minutes before he saw a one-on-one opportunity brilliantly saved by in-demand Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer two minutes later.

Valencia should have levelled again through substitute Tino Costa, but he failed to connect with his first-time shot with the goal beckoning.

But as Valencia poured forward seeking the late away goal that would take them through, Schalke struck with a counter-attacking move finished by Farfan, who chipped over Guaita to send Felix Magath’s side through to the last eight for just the second time in their history.

This stunning Jefferson Farfan free kick vs Valencia was one of the best goals scored in the Champions League in the 10/11 season. The Farfan free kick vs Valencia brought Schalke on level terms in their second leg against Valencia, and the Royal Blues eventually won 3-1 to progress 4-2 on aggregate. Apart from the free kick, Farfan also scored the third goal of the game for Schalke.

La Liga wrap: Barca extend lead, Valencia consolidate third

Barcelona moved 10 points clear of Real Madrid in La Liga with an uncharacteristically staid 1-0 win over Real Zaragoza on Saturday.

Seydou Keita was the unlikely hero at the Camp Nou, notching just his second goal of the season two minutes from half-time to secure Barca’s fourth straight league victory.

Barca was lacklustre in the first half before Lionel Messi sparked the Spanish champions into action, sweeping a cross to Keita at the far post for the Malian defender to tuck past Zaragoza goalkeeper Dolbas.

It was just reward for Keita, who had earlier had a goal controversially disallowed for offside.

Pep Guardiola was a less animated figure than usual on the touchline, the Barca boss still suffering from a back injury that necessitated his hospitalisation on Thursday.

Real Madrid will have a chance to reduce the gap to seven points when they take on Racing Santander on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Villarreal’s top-three hopes suffered a blow with a 3-1 loss at Atletico Madrid.

Jose Antonio Reyes put Atletico in front five minutes in with a fine curling effort from 20 yards out, but Giuseppe Rossi drew Villarreal level with a left-footed redirection of Santi Cazorla’s free kick after 33 minutes.

But Atletico responded after the break with quick goals to Sergio Aguero (69) and Diego Forlan (72), the former played in to the area by Filipe Luis for an easy finish and the latter converting from close range on Reyes’ good work.

Finally, Pablo Hernandez scored in either half as Valencia ran out 2-1 winners at Mallorca, leaving the visitors well placed to clinch third spot behind Barca and Real.

La Liga preview: Barcelona braced for Valencia test

Barcelona travel to third-placed Valencia on Wednesday in the highlight of a La Liga round spread across three days.

Barca, who top the league by seven points ahead of Real Madrid, are 17 points clear of Valencia and remarkably have lost just one game this season – at home to newly promoted Hercules back in September.

But it would not surprise if Barcelona’s second loss of the season did come against Valencia, who have not lost a league fixture since Real Madrid beat them 2-0 at the Bernabeu in early December.

Valencia have lost just once at home this season and are coming off a big 2-1 away win at Athletic Bilbao, who are also challenging for a European spot, which saw them four points clear of Villarreal in third position, one of the automatic qualification spots into the Champions League.

“With perseverance we beat a big rival at a very difficult venue, and for that we must be doubly pleased,” Valencia coach Unai Emery said.

When quizzed on the midweek fixture against Barca, Emery said his side need to approach the game ‘with enthusiasm and a need to defend third place’.

Pep Guardiola’s side enter the match after a 3-0 away win at Mallorca on Saturday and keen to extend their lead on Real, but they will need the likes of Lionel Messi (26 league goals this season) and former Valencia striker David Villa (17) to be at their best.

Xavi and Jeffren returned to training on Monday and could make returns from injury for Barca but goalkeeper Victor Valdes and defender Carles Puyol will miss the clash, while Valencia’s top scorer Aduriz, who has struck nine La Liga goals this season, will not play any part due to injury.

Relegation-threatened Malaga are rank outsiders when they travel to Real Madrid on Thursday but despite the club sitting second last, they can take heart from a four-match unbeaten run.

They will face a fired-up Real side determined to gain revenge for a 0-0 draw at Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday, with a victory helping keep the pressure on Barcelona.

A victory for Espanyol on Tuesday against Mallorca would see them nudge to within four points of fourth-placed Villarreal while the other match on Tuesday sees Sevilla take on strugglers Sporting Gijon.

Real Zaragoza and Getafe host Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid respectively on Wednesday while Hercules travel to Villarreal and Osasuna host Deportivo La Coruna.

Real Sociedad clash with Levante also on Wednesday while Racing Santander travel to bottom-of-the-table Almeria on Thursday.

Pep Guardiola’s side enter the match after a 3-0 away win at Mallorca on Saturday and keen to extend their lead on Real, but they will need the likes of Lionel Messi (26 league goals this season) and former Valencia striker David Villa (17) to be at their best.

Xavi and Jeffren returned to training on Monday and could make returns from injury for Barca but goalkeeper Victor Valdes and defender Carles Puyol will miss the clash, while Valencia’s top scorer Aduriz, who has struck nine La Liga goals this season, will not play any part due to injury.

Relegation-threatened Malaga are rank outsiders when they travel to Real Madrid on Thursday but despite the club sitting second last, they can take heart from a four-match unbeaten run.

They will face a fired-up Real side determined to gain revenge for a 0-0 draw at Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday, with a victory helping keep the pressure on Barcelona.

A victory for Espanyol on Tuesday against Mallorca would see them nudge to within four points of fourth-placed Villarreal while the other match on Tuesday sees Sevilla take on strugglers Sporting Gijon.

Real Zaragoza and Getafe host Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid respectively on Wednesday while Hercules travel to Villarreal and Osasuna host Deportivo La Coruna.

Real Sociedad clash with Levante also on Wednesday while Racing Santander travel to bottom-of-the-table Almeria on Thursday.

Positive-minded Valencia braced for Barca

Valencia winger Joaquin believes his team’s recent run of form leaves them full of confidence going into Wednesday’s clash with Barcelona.

Valencia have won three of their last four games in La Liga, including a hard-fought 2-1 victory away to Athletic Bilbao on Sunday.

Joaquin knows league leaders Barcelona will be their toughest test yet but says his team go into the game in a positive frame of mind.

“The three points from Sunday gives us a big boost because winning at the Cathedral is always very difficult,” he said.

“Athletic are a very solid and tough side at home and taking the three points after having to fight so hard makes people very happy.”

“Irrespective of that, I am very excited about Wednesday’s game, even more so because of the confidence I have in how the team are doing. We are happy, above all, with the important three points,” he added.

Joaquin also spoke of former Valencia team-mate David Villa, who will return to the Mestalla for the first time following a close-season switch to the Catalan giants.

“It would be exciting for Villa to play in Mestalla, and we would love to see him beforehand,” Joaquin said.

“During the game there are three points at stake that we can’t afford to drop. It is going to be harder than ever, because they are a good team.”

“But we are going to try and impose our football on the game. We are capable of ensuring Barcelona feel comfortable because, if they do, then they will have a good chance.”

Real Madrid legend Raul returned to Spain for the first time since leaving to help new side Schalke secure a valuable 1-1 draw with Valencia.

Raul’s strike on Tuesday was his 69th Champions League goal and his 71st in UEFA competitions, taking him past Filippo Inzaghi as the all-time highest goal-scorer in European competition.

The away draw gives the Bundesliga outfit every chance of progressing in the second leg of the round of 16 tie at the Gelsenkirchen on March 10.

But the night could not have begun worse for Schalke, as the 2000 and 2001 Champions League finalists claimed an early lead.

A lovely move that began with Aduriz found Frenchman Jeremy Mathieu, who put a sublime early ball into the box.

Striker Roberto Soldado charged towards the near post and struck a left-foot shot past Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, sending the Mestalla crowd wild.

The goalscorer had another chance to find the back of the net only moments later but turned his header wide after a neat cross from Miguel, while Aduriz could only find the side netting from six yards.

Valencia turned up the heat in their quest for a second goal after the break with Argentine Ever Banega just shooting wide, before Aduriz shot straight at the goalkeeper when he should have done better.

And the La Liga outfit’s failure to take their chances came back to haunt them after 64 minutes when Raul found the back of the net.

A neat ball from fellow Spaniard Jurado gave Raul the chance and, after a well-controlled first touch, he produced an exquisite left-foot finish that reminded everyone of the former Spain captain’s undoubted qualities in front of goal.

It was a vital goal for the Germans and they nearly claimed a late winner when, in the first minute of injury time, substitute Hao Junmin – who had only just come onto the pitch – forced a terrific save from Guaita in Valencia’s goal.

But in the end Schalke were happy to settle for an away point, especially after the injury time dismissal of Lukas Schmitz for a second yellow card.
