Johan Djourou Will Return For Arsenal In Four Weeks

Arsenal defender Johan Djourou will be out of action for four weeks after dislocating his shoulder in the 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester United.

The 24-year-old underwent an exploratory operation and the club confirmed on their website that he will not need reconstructive surgery.

The Swiss international will now begin a period of rehabilitation on the shoulder before returning to training in around a month.

It was originally feared Djourou would miss the rest of the season before the Swiss FA reported the centre-back could be back in two weeks.

Djourou now faces a race to be fit for the North London derby with Tottenham but is likely to miss the league games against Blackburn, Blackpool and Liverpool.

Ray of Hope as Djourou Avoids Surgery; 15 Gunners Called Up for International Duty

A couple of quick stories worth talking about today:

First, and most importantly, the club has confirmed that while Djourou will be out at least 4 weeks, he will not need surgery. The brief statement from the club also says that he will return to training in “about a month.” It’s probably wishing for too much, but if he comes back in 4 weeks, gets a week of training, and is then ready to return to match fitness, that would put him in line for a return against Manchester United on May 1. So that would be good, obviously. And it is an upper body injury, so while he will probably need to keep the shoulder largely immobilized, hopefully this injury will not prevent him from keeping his overall fitness up.

Elsewhere, Szczesny is positive despite his injury, and isn’t just sitting around. He says that while he can’t do normal goalkeeper training because his finger is in a split and he can’t use his hands, he is undergoing a lot of lower body training, is keeping his fitness up, and is working hard on his distribution, which I think most of us know is an area of his game that could really use some work. While I’m sure it must be disappointed, it’s encouraging that he’s staying busy, working hard, and dedicating himself to improving. Certainly bodes well for his future.

The final news is in internationals, which you all know I simply adore. 15 Arsenal players have gotten the call-up for their national sides for the upcoming international break:

So there’s that, then. Worrisome because that list basically contains all of our fit, effective players, and we are certainly at a time when, given our injuries and that our title hopes are hanging by a thread, we can’t afford any more. So let’s hope everyone comes back in one piece.

That’s it for today. We’ll be back in the coming days, but as usual with these international breaks, there isn’t a great deal of news going on, so I guess we’ll have to find something else to do with our weeks. If your significant other doesn’t know any better, this would certainly be a great couple of weeks to say, “Honey, you are so lovely and kind and tolerant of me scheduling our weekend around a football team that’s prone to crapping out and making me so angry I’m hard to live with for the rest of the day — why don’t I skip the game this weekend so we can spend some quality time together?” Just a thought.

Djourou injury ´not as serious´

The Swiss FA have given Arsenal a huge boost over the fitness of defender Johan Djourou.

In a release on their website, the Swiss have revealed every effort is being made to get Djourou fit for his country’s Euro 2012 clash against Bulgaria on March 26.

“The shoulder injury to Johan Djourou is less serious than feared on Saturday and announced by the coach of his club,” the release said.

“The Arsenal defender and member of the Switzerland national team was submitted to thorough medical examinations on Monday.”

“At the end of a long, exhausting day, Johan Djourou had new hope that…. his season is not over yet.”

The report also said that Djourou suffered no fractures to his shoulder suggesting he may yet be fit enough to play a part in the Gunners title charge.

The centre-back, who has been in good form for the Gunners, was ruled out for the season on Saturday with a dislocated shoulder picked up during Arsenal’s FA Cup defeat to Manchester United.

Immediately after the game manager Arsene Wenger said there was no chance the 24-year-old would play any part in the final 10 games of the campaign.

The Gunners star fell awkwardly in a collision with team-mate Bacary Sagna late in the match as Arsenal crashed out of their third cup competition in two weeks.

On Sunday, Djourou seemed to suggest that he was making good progress.

On Twitter, he wrote: “Many thanks for all your wishes. I am feeling today a little bit better. I have to wait and see how my shoulder is progressing. I will keep you updated.”

Djourou missed almost the entire 2009-10 campaign following knee surgery but has returned to be Arsenal’s most consistent performer in a back four beset by problems.

Thomas Vermaelen has missed the majority of the campaign with a long-standing achilles problem, while new signings Laurent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci have failed to justify their place in the team on more than one occasion.
