Reja concern at refereeing ´mistakes´

Lazio coach Edoardo Reja believes poor refereeing decisions could lead to his side missing out on Champions League football next year.

Lazio hung onto fourth – the final spot for Champions League football qualification – in the Serie A on Sunday after the Rome side defeated Parma 2-0.

“We started quite well today, we scored and then we stopped, we were slow, we conceded too much to Parma for 20 minutes and a team such as Lazio shouldn’t be giving that much away,” he said.

“Well, we need two away wins now, two away wins and to keep up with the solid home performances. We really need this, if we don’t win twice away we risk not making fourth position.”

But Reja also expressed concern about what he perceived as unfavourable referring decisions that he believed would prove unjust should Lazio fail to attain Champions League football for the 2011/12 season.

“I am very worried, I already was during the year and I’m particularly worried now, and not only for this period, the whole season went like that according to me,” he said.

“When something happens to us we complain a bit but everyone forgets about it in a day. When something happens to other teams the discussions seem to go on all week.”

“I hope the matches will be fair from now till the end of the championship, I hope so anyway. It didn’t happen during the year, but from now on everyone should be very careful, because the work done the whole season is at stake.”

“Mistakes can occur but should be made in good faith and not because influenced by something.”

Reja’s sentiment was also shared by veteran midfielder Cristian Brocchi.

“One thing is sure, if Lazio ended in the fourth place it would surely have deserved it more than other teams, because from the beginning of the championship up to now we’ve never had any favouritism, neither from the referees nor from the media,” Brocchi said.

“Compared to the other teams and so we’re really proud of ourselves. Yesterday it was a clear penalty for Roma, so nothing to say about that, while a lot could be said about the penalty not given to Udinese.”

Kombouare concern over PSG fixtures

Paris Saint-Germain manager Antoine Kombouare said selection for upcoming matches is critical given their hectic schedule of fixtures.

The Parisians are fifth in Ligue 1 but have a last-32 second leg match against their Belarusian opponents BATE Borisov in the Europa League on Thursday as their focus.

A victory, a scoreless draw or a 1-1 stalemate would see Kombouare’s side advance to the final 16 inside 90 minutes, but the 47-year-old boss was worried about their packed line-up of fixtures that begins with BATE.

Kombouare’s side face the prospect of four matches in the next nine days, including two league games as they attempt to cut the four-point gap between them and leaders Lille.

“We have a lot of games to play and it’s true that we have also important matches coming up. On Sunday we played Toulouse, on Wednesday we have the quarter-final against Le Mans and on Saturday we have a trip to Auxerre, so I must make some decisions (on selection),” Kombouare said.

“I am forced to make choices because these players cannot play every game, it’s impossible. It is useless if on the ground the players are tired and today we have a quality group.”

Kombouare said his side are prepared for an attacking contest, with BATE requiring victory or a high-scoring draw at the Parc des Princes to move into the next phase.

“It’s going to be a tough game because on the first game we saw a great team of BATE Borisov. For them, the calculation is simple: they must win the game or a draw 3-3 to qualify,” he said.

“So tomorrow, we expect an open game with a team that will play to score goals. So it is going to be a fun game and hopefully we will win it.”

Cause for concern

After the adrenaline high from THAT goal and the win from yesterday, the sobering reality set in: we are coming toward the final third of our league schedule. In race terms, we’re turning the corner and heading down that last stretch.

Looking at what we have to face before we cross that finish line on May 22nd, there definitely seems to be some .

1.12 league games to play. 4 out of those 12 are against Chelsea (x2), Liverpool and Arsenal. 3 out of those 4 are away from home.

2.7 out of our remaining 12 league games are away from home. We have only won 3 out of our 12 away games thus far for a very unimpressive 25% win percentage.

3.Our goal difference away from home is +2. Our closest competitors (Arsenal and City) boast an away goal difference of +12 and +8 respectively.

4.Arsenal, who are in the best position to leapfrog us, have 6 home and 6 away games left on their schedule. Their toughest fixtures out of those 12 are against us and Liverpool. Both of those games are taking place at the Emirates.

I’m not saying that we can’t win the title. But we obviously need to pick up our away form especially since we know the quality of performance this team is capable of when playing at OT.

SAF has challenged his front 2 to start scoring away from home where the goals just seem to be in short supply. In his own words: “I have to say, what I need to get out of Wayne and Berbatov are performances away from home that are as good as they are at home.”

I hate to be a party pooper after all the excitement from yesterday’s derby win. It was a fantastic overall performance by the team, but it was also at home where we’ve generally been unstoppable this year.

Unfortunately, we can’t play every game at Old Trafford.

De Boer: Qatar can handle player heat concern

Former Holland international Ronald de Boer believes the soaring heat in Qatar during the 2022 World Cup will not affect players, only fans.

Qatar’s intense summer has been the subject of debate since the tiny Gulf nation was awarded the right to host football’s biggest tournament in December.

Concerns have been raised about player safety given temperatures can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius during the day, prompting FIFA boss Sepp Blatter and UEFA chief Michel Platini to consider shifting the tournament to January.

But Qatar World Cup bid ambassador De Boer – who finished his career in the country with Al-Shamal – believes players will not be affected by the heat due to air-conditioning technology installed in yet-to-be-built stadiums in Qatar, though he worries about the safety of supporters outside the arenas.

“Playing is not an issue because we have the technology already that will cool down the stadium inside, so for me the players there won’t be a problem,” De Boer said.

“The only worry for me is for the people. Football is for the fans, so I see a little issue there maybe, but football wise for the players they will have great conditions. I don’t see any problems with that.”

“If it was up to me I would say move it a month backwards because May is perfect, so you would have it from the beginning of May to the beginning of June.”

“That’s my opinion but who am I to say? Qatar has always bid to host it in the summer so we’re not deciding that it should be in the winter or some time else.”

De Boer also revealed he is to replace Dennis Bergkamp in leading Ajax’s youth team, fuelling speculation that the former Arsenal star is to become an assistant to Ronald’s twin brother, Frank.

Frank de Boer was appointed caretaker manager of Ajax following Martin Jol’s resignation in December.

“I will move back to Amsterdam in the summer, as I’m going to start coaching the youth team,” the younger De Boer said.

“I’m also doing my coaching badge and trying to get that and see how I like it.”

“My kids are getting older now; they are turning 18 and 15 so they want to be in Amsterdam so it’s time for me to go back.”

“But I want to make sure the link with Qatar is very strong. I’m going to be involved in the World Cup and let’s see how it goes.”
