Fabregas keen to play for Arsenal again

Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas has spoken of his desire to one day play for Arsenal again.

The Spanish international left the Emirates Stadium in the close season after a protracted transfer saga involving the Gunners and the club where he started his career.

The 24-year-old eventually joined the European champions for an initial fee of 25 million pounds, but says that leaving north London was a deeply emotional time for him.

“If I have to leave Barcelona, I will go back to Arsenal – I would like to,” Fabregas told Sky Sports News.

“I am not embarrassed to say that the day I left I could only say ‘Thank you very much’, I couldn’t say more.”

“I’m not embarrassed to say that I nearly cried.”

“Arsene Wenger, I have never met someone that loyal. He is one of the best, I really believe that.”

Fabregas has scored eight goals in 12 appearances in La Liga this season, while at the same time contributing five assists.

Barcelona to Sell Six to Fund £52.7m Bid for Arsenal Captain Cesc Fabregas

Barcelona are planning to cut 6 first team stars this summer according to esteemed Spanish publication AS in an effort to raise funds to launch a bid for Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas.

The Barcelona President Sandro Rosell has revealed that the club will only be able to launch a summer offer for Fabregas if they sell a number of their current first team stars to finance the deal. The six players tipped to leave the Nou Camp are Adriano, Ibrahim Afellay, Maxwell, Seydou Keita, Gabi Milito, and Jeffren. The news will alert the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur who have been interested in two of the aforementioned squad members.

A great deal of speculation that surrounded the issue of finances at the Nou Camp and that the lack of funds for Pep Guardiola was preventing the Catalan club from meeting any valuation placed on Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas as opposed to any feeling that too much was being demanded by the North London club, with that in mind this source believes that the La Liga champions are willing to sell a number of first team squad players to help fund a move for the Spanish international.

Barca's two centre back stalwarts Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique out of the line up is heartening news.

More welcome will be the presence of Robin Van Persie, Cesc Fabregas, and Jack Wilshere in the 18 man squad to make the trip to Camp Nou.

RVP had made very rapid progress in the last three days according to Wenger. And Fabregas's hamstring is now at 90% fitness. So they are not in fact, fully fit which means Wenger is taking a known gamble but to press a 2-1 advantage against the best team in the world leaves him with little choice.

Some would raise eyebrows at Pep Guardiola's statement that Wilshere would be a good reserve player at Barca. But it is hardly a put down given the quality right now in their first squad. Even Fabregas would find a tough go. But that overlooks the fact Wilshere is being groomed before his time because Denilson has proven so abysmal. It also benefits Fabio Capello as quality English midfielders are all too rare.

Alex Song is to miss the trip and his place will be taken by Abou Diaby with his known liabilities who will have to step up bolster defensive duties. Song has transformed into a genuine hardman and his crab like legs can tangle up many attacking players whereas Diaby is far more lightweight. He has to get down and dirty. A few hard tackles to disrupt Xavi and Iniesta.

Fabregas ´90 percent´ likely for Barca trip

Arsene Wenger has all but confirmed Cesc Fabregas’ place in the squad for Arsenal’s Champions League clash against Barcelona on Tuesday.

The former Catalan youth player limped off with a hamstring injury in his side’s 1-0 victory over Stoke in the English Premier League in February and has missed three matches with the complaint, but the French boss said Fabregas is almost certain to be part of the Arsenal squad for the second-leg, round-of-16 match at the Nou Camp.

“Fabregas will have a final test today (Monday) and I am 90 percent he will travel and be fit,” Wenger said of his captain.

“It is vital for us because he is important in the transition between defending to attacking because he gets us out of pressure and can give a final ball as well.”

“He is one of the leaders of the team – the leader of the team – so it is important to have him in a big game like that.”

Wenger conceded Pep Guardiola’s side would attempt to manipulate possession to try and overcome Arsenal’s 2-1 first-leg lead, but he believes his side is equipped for the job as they bid to reach the competition’s quarter-finals.

“Yes we have to (defend) because it is one of the few games where we spend 60 percent of time defending,” he said.

“It is very important but we have to fight against the preconceived ideas as well because the only one way of thinking is that Arsenal cannot defend.”

“But I would just remind you that in the last 11 games we have seven clean sheets in the Premier League and conceded less goals than Man United, for example, which is a very good defence.”

Walcott out, Fabregas doubt

Arsene Wenger has revealed Theo Walcott will miss the Carling Cup final with an ankle injury, while Cesc Fabregas is also a doubt.

Fabregas had to be substituted with a hamstring problem after only 14 minutes of the Gunners’ 1-0 win over Stoke City at the Emirates on Wednesday, Sebastien Squillaci scoring the only goal to put Arsenal just one point behind English Premier League leaders Manchester United.

Walcott was stretchered off after 71 minutes to add to manager Arsene Wenger’s problems as they prepare to face Birmingham City at Wembley on Sunday.

“Theo has an ankle sprain and is out. For how long, I can’t tell you, but for Sunday he’s definitely out,” Wenger said.

“Fabregas is a hamstring problem, we’ll assess it tomorrow. It’s impossible to say how serious it is.”

“It is of course a concern that he’s injured but it can happen. He was very upset, I am as well. But it’s not his fault, it’s not my fault, it’s just part of sport. We have to face it. We did the job after that in a very professional way that’s what we should concentrate on.”

Wenger was alluding to the way his team survived an increasingly ferocious second half to keep hold of three crucial points.

“It shows we have matured because we can win a game when we are less creative than usual but with intelligence, brain and calm,” he said.

“That’s what has changed. A few years ago when we were not on top of our game we dropped points but not this time – I must give a lot of credit to my players tonight.”

Arsenal held out admirably to take the points and are now only one point behind Man United – who face Chelsea away next week – heaping pressure on their title rivals.

“We have all pressure now because March is the period where it starts,” Wenger said.

“Chelsea are under pressure, Man United, everybody. That’s part of being in the position we are in. Three months ago when we lost at home to Newcastle who would have said we would even be in the top four? But we have come back in a strong position and I’m very happy about that.”

Stoke boss Tony Pulis insists his team were not to blame for Arsenal losing Fabregas and Walcott to injury and believes his players are unfairly portrayed as villains.

“You can’t stop people’s perception but we have a very good disciplinary record,” he said.

“Arsenal have had six players sent off to our two, they have had more bookings than us. And you wouldn’t say they are a dirty side.”

“But we have to get on with it; we’re very competitive and we’re a very honest team. We don’t like people rolling around getting people booked. That’s the way we like to do it. We like to do it an honest way.”

“I’ve got nothing against Arsenal. They are a fantastic football club and fantastic team. I hope for British football they go to Barca and win but when we play against them we have to be competitive.”

“We weren’t in the first 10 minutes when I thought we were in for a hiding. But in the second half we are desperately disappointed we didn’t get something out of the game.”

“We have all pressure now because March is the period where it starts,” Wenger said.

“Chelsea are under pressure, Man United, everybody. That’s part of being in the position we are in. Three months ago when we lost at home to Newcastle who would have said we would even be in the top four? But we have come back in a strong position and I’m very happy about that.”

Stoke boss Tony Pulis insists his team were not to blame for Arsenal losing Fabregas and Walcott to injury and believes his players are unfairly portrayed as villains.

“You can’t stop people’s perception but we have a very good disciplinary record,” he said.

“Arsenal have had six players sent off to our two, they have had more bookings than us. And you wouldn’t say they are a dirty side.”

“But we have to get on with it; we’re very competitive and we’re a very honest team. We don’t like people rolling around getting people booked. That’s the way we like to do it. We like to do it an honest way.”

“I’ve got nothing against Arsenal. They are a fantastic football club and fantastic team. I hope for British football they go to Barca and win but when we play against them we have to be competitive.”

“We weren’t in the first 10 minutes when I thought we were in for a hiding. But in the second half we are desperately disappointed we didn’t get something out of the game.”

Barca´s Fabregas move ´dead´

Barcelona have acknowledged there are no plans to lure Arsenal talisman Cesc Fabregas back to the Camp Nou in the next transfer window.

Fabregas was heavily linked with a move to Barca in last July’s window, with the Spaniard fuelling speculation by admitting it would be a dream come true to play for the club of his youth.

For their part, the La Liga club were understandably keen to woo Fabregas back to Spain, but their efforts were stonewalled by Arsenal.

Despite claims from more than one Spain international that Fabregas was unhappy at the Emirates, the 23-year-old respected the English Premier League club’s decision not to entertain a transfer and has continued to lead the Gunners by example.

Now, with the Catalan club set to visit Arsenal in a tantalising Champions League clash next Wednesday, Barca director of football Raul Sanllehi has admitted their hopes of snaring Fabregas have been dashed for the time being.

“Cesc is a great Catalan player. He played for us as a kid and he will be welcome back at Barcelona for the Champions League match,” Sanllehi said.

“Right now, everything is dead regarding a transfer.”

All-conquering Barca have been in irresistible form this season, but Sanllehi knows Pep Guardiola’s men can not take anything for granted against the dangerous Gunners.

“Arsenal are one of the main challengers for the Champions League,” he said.

“We acknowledge how difficult it is going to be.”

Fabregas sweet with FA

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas will face no action from the Football Association despite allegations he verbally abused referee Lee Mason.

Fabregas was accused by opposition manager David Moyes of directing offensive language at Mason during the half-time break in Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Everton at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

Immediately after the game, which Everton lost to a Laurent Koscielny goal in the 75th minute, an infuriated Moyes insisted that the Spain midfielder should have been punished for his alleged comments.

“I think at half-time in the tunnel was the worst,” Moyes said.

“Fabregas should have been sent off in the tunnel for his comments about the officials. It was disgusting.”

“I am not going to repeat what they were. They were disappointing comments from someone who is such a talented footballer.”

But Mason chose not to submit an Extraordinary Incident Report and the FA confirmed on Wednesday that the issue was closed.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger claims that he spoke to the match officials at half-time, not Fabregas.

“I was next to Fabregas at half-time and I can’t see why David Moyes is furious with him,” Wenger said.

“Fabregas didn’t speak to the referee at half-time, I did.”

But the Arsenal captain appears to have admitted he did pass some comment on Mason and his assistants as the players were leaving the field for the break.

“There has been much talk about me saying things to the officials at half-time on Tuesday night,” Fabregas said.

“All I can say is that I have respect for all match officials.”

“Players from both sides were saying things as we came off the pitch, and this always happens in football. Clearly the officials feel that nothing serious happened.”
