Former Manchester City forward Neil Young, scorer of the only goal in the 1969 FA Cup final against Leicester, has died at the age of 66.
Under the guidance of managers Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison, Young was key to City’s most successful era.
He was the club’s top scorer as they won the old First Division title in 1968 and found the net in the European Cup Winners’ Cup victory of 1970.
Young joined City in 1959 and scored 107 goals in 412 matches for the club.
Raised in the Fallowfield, Young supported City as a boy and signed as an apprentice upon leaving school.
His 19 goals in the 1967-68 season, including two in a 4-3 win over Newcastle on the final day, were crucial as City finished two points clear of city rivals Manchester United to be crowned champions – the last time they won the title.
Despite his success with City however, Young never followed team-mates Francis Lee, Colin Bell and Mike Summerbee into the England team.
After 13 years with the club and with his first-team chances dwindling, he signed for Preston in 1972, playing at Deepdale for two seasons before retiring after a brief spell with Rochdale.
“He will be sadly missed by his wife Carmen, family, friends and everyone connected with the Manchester City,” read a statement on City’s website.
The current Manchester City team paid tribute to Young, who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer earlier this year, ahead of January’s FA Cup tie away Leicester.
The players donned replicas of the shirt worn in the 1969 FA Cup final while the visiting fans, many of whom wore red and black scarves, turned their backs on the action in the 24th minute – the time of Young’s FA Cup-winning goal.

Firstly I asked about when he first joined Wolves and whether he felt it was a big opportunity to make his name or, given that Wolves were a fourth division club at the time, whether he felt he was resigning himself to being a lower division player? – At the time I didn’t really think about that cause all I wanted was to be playing football and Graham Turner wanted me to play and I wasn’t getting games at the Albion. As soon as I got my first goal for Wolves I was happy at the club.
What were his memories of how bad a state the club were in at the time he joined? – When I arrived at the club to sign on there were two girls and the club secretary housed in the Waterloo Road Stand and nobody else. There were puddles on the carpets and me and Andy Thompson both wondered what we were letting ourselves in for. Most of the training was done on the North Bank car park and the facilities generally were nowhere near as good as what we had left behind at the Albion.
When the club started making progress and you were scoring loads of goals did you feel like you were living the dream or did you just treat it as a job? – To be fair I just treated it as a job because you never know when it will come to an end through injuries or whatever and as a Black Country lad I would always keep my feet on the ground. Having said that all I wanted to do was play football and score goals so in that sense I was living the dream cause that was all I ever wanted to do.
When I used to watch Bully play I always thought one of his biggest assets alongside his footballing ability was that he never let his head drop if he missed a chance and would just keep his head up and keep looking for the next chance to come along. I put it to him that this positive attitude was a major factor in his success. – Yes I agree with you. There was a game against Bolton that sticks in my mind. I reckon during the course of the game I had at least 8 good chances and had missed them all and even the Wolves fans were starting to have a go at me. But late on I got one last chance and tucked it away for the winner and everyone went home happy.
With the benefit of a time machine, if you could relive one match from your career what would it be? For a number of reasons I think the away match at Newcastle on New Years Day 1990. The evening before the instructions from the manager were that we could have a few halves and then phone the wives at 5 past midnight then go to bed. Lets just say thats not the way it worked out as me, Thommo, Mutchy and Cooky had more than a few halves and were not tucked up in bed by ten past midnight. To win an important away game considering the state we were in was great and for me to get 4 goals while still under the influence was quite an achievement.
When you watch the Premier League games nowadays do you think the Steve Bull of the 90s could have been successful at that level? – Well its certainly a quicker game nowadays but I would like to think I could have done the job. In some ways it might even be easier cause I used to often have to drop deep and get the ball myself and make runs at the defence but with top quality players around me I could have focused more on just being in the right place at the right time in the penalty area.
When you go to watch the Wolves nowadays and often sit amongst the fans at the away games, do you watch just as a normal supporter or are you thinking of what you would have done, and do you give the strikers some stick when they miss chances? – I just watch as a fan and I love it. Enjoy the game, have a pie and a pint and have some banter with my mates. Just like most blokes when I am with my mates the conversation is about football most of the time anyway.
So what do you think of Wolves prospects for this season? Are you hopeful we will stay up? Confident? – I will only really be confident if we are 10 points above the drop zone with 3 games left. But I am hopeful, they have been playing well most games and it will be a crying shame if we drop down.
And do you fancy us against Liverpool on Saturday? – I think we will get something out of the game. Not so long ago Liverpool would have been hot favourites to beat the Wolves but I don’t think the sportingbet odds will show that on Saturday. Dalglish is still settling back into the job and its not his team yet so we are playing them at the right time.
And finally from the conversations you have had with Steve Morgan, Jez Moxey and Mick McCarthy do you feel optimistic about the future for Wolves? – I think Mick is the right man for the job and Steve has got all his plans laid out to take the club forward as you will have seen from the stadium plans. He will be looking for the team to improve as those plans come to fruition. If we can just stay up this season then I think we can move forward as a club and get to the point where we are signing proven top class players that can help us get the status of an established Premier League club.
