My apologies for the late review, but I am still getting over an illness, of course a perfect tonic for my aching body was an excellent 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at St. James Park. Everton went down early off a Best goal, but Leon Osman ended his year long goal drought by getting a well deserved goal, and Phil Jagielka took the lead for Everton just minutes later off of a fantastic set piece. So now on to a few thoughts about Saturday’s game, as well as quick little preview of the game against Birmingham on Wednesday.
1. Once again the 4-4-2 seems to be the best formation for Everton to get points with. Jermaine Beckford made it to the game on time for this one, and both he and Louis Saha partnered up front together, and both players looked dangerous for most of the game, and had several opportunities for goals. With Cahill on the sideline probably through the end of the month, the 4-4-2 is probably going to be Everton’s formation for that span if not longer, and it can only help Everton.
2. Leon Osman finally got his well deserved goal for the past several matches of hard work. Ever since the Chelsea match Osman has been a huge force in the Everton midfield, both with his defensive presence, as well as his creativity going forward. Osman finally put an excellent goal in the back of the net after coming extremely close last Tuesday against Reading, as well as having several chances against both Sunderland and Chelsea. With Billy failing to really solidify his hold on the left midfielder spot, Osman jumped at the opportunity to claim the spot, and so far he has done so brilliantly.
And now for your reading entertainment, a quick look at Wednesday’s clash against Birmingham.
Expected Lineup:
Saha-Beckford
Osman – Arteta – Rodwell – Coleman
Baines – Jagielka – Distin – Hibbert
Howard
The only change from the Newcastle game is Coleman replace Neville who limped off with some sort of injury in the 52nd minute of the Newcastle match. With Everton only having one game against Fulham for the rest of the month, it makes very little sense for Moyes to risk further injury to Neville. Because of Neville’s injury, this means Hibbert will reprise his role at right back, which will certainly worry some fans, although thankfully Birmingham is a team that is a little short in the attacking third.
Up top look for Saha and Beckford to pair up once again, and both will have their mettle tested if Birmingham decides to sit back and wait for the counter to score. If anything these tactics will probably hurt Beckford more than Saha who is very familiar with defensive minded tactics over his years of Premier League experience. One battle that will be interesting to look at will be Seamus Coleman matching up against Birmingham defender Liam Ridgewell. Although Ridgewell is primarily a center back, he has been the start of the Birmingham defense this year, and will have to be in top form to stop a spry Seamus Coleman.
Wednesday’s game will kick off at 3pm, and hopefully Everton can take another 3 points to make it 9 points out of a possible 9 for the past 3 EPL matches. Until next time COYB!
