Heinze regrets Old Trafford exit

Former Manchester United full-back Gabriel Heinze has expressed his regrets over his departure from Old Trafford.

The Argentina defender spent three years at Old Trafford, during which time he won a Premier League title and became a crowd favourite for his no-nonsense tackling.

However, his time with the club ended in bitterness.

In declaring a desire to leave in 2007, Heinze demanded to join Liverpool, something totally unpalatable to manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The pair exchanged angry words before Ferguson eventually got his way.

Heinze joined Real Madrid instead, after which Ferguson revealed the defender had first asked for a transfer within 12 months of his arrival from Paris St Germain.

Now at Marseille, who tackle United in the Champions League on Wednesday, the 32-year-old accepts the situation was not handled particularly well.

“I regret it a lot, especially the last three months,” Heinze told the Manchester Evening News.

“I am a strong person and so is Alex Ferguson. I took the decision I did and I regret it, especially for the fans and I hope it has not tarnished me with them.”

That Heinze wanted to leave in the first place was a disappointment to United. Trying to quit for Liverpool merely inflamed passions.

“I don’t really want to talk about what happened four years ago,” he said.

“Maybe someday I will tell the whole story.

“But I knew the risks and was aware of what being at a club like Liverpool would mean.”

Heinze has met Ferguson just once since, a brief encounter in Qatar when Argentina met Brazil in a friendly.

“I was really happy to see him,” said Heinze.

“When I was at Manchester United, Ferguson impressed me a lot. He gave me a winning culture.”

“I had three wonderful years there. It is a great club and it is not so very different now from four years ago.”

“It is the same coach. He is the one who sends the message that it is always to win.”

“The players may change but the philosophy stays the same.”

A classic David vs Goliath tie at Old Trafford today

Non-League Crawley head to Old Trafford to face Manchester United in the FA Cup fifth round for the biggest game in the history of their club later today.

It’s a classic David vs Goliath clash, the giant vs the minnow. The Blue Square Premier side couldn’t have wished for a bigger or better draw.

Supporters

The non-league outfit are set to take 9,000 fans to the theatre of dreams and it will be a fantastic day out for the Crawley fans, no matter how the game goes. Even if Town are heavily beaten I’m sure the Crawley fans will enjoy their day out.

Romance

This is the sort of tie that has made the FA Cup down the years. A lower league team gets their chance to impress at one of the biggest stadiums in the world. The FA Cup is famous for being a competition that inspires shocks and performances.

Complacent

On paper this game should be a sure-fire Manchester United victory but this is the FA Cup and shocks do happen. Manchester United are certainly not underestimating their non-league opponents though.

United midfielder Michael Carrick told Sky Sports: “It’s a classic draw and one that a lot of people probably wanted to see. It’s one of those great things the FA Cup is capable of throwing up.

“A lot of people are going to have a great day, but for us it is about getting through to the next round.

Evra happy at Old Trafford for now

Patrice Evra’s agent has quashed talk of an imminent move to Real Madrid by confirming Evra will remain at Manchester United until July.

The France international has been linked with a move to the Spanish giants in the January transfer window, reportedly as part of a deal that would see Real striker Karim Benzema link up with Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

Evra stoked the rumours by telling Spanish media he would be happy at the Bernabeu under Jose Mourinho.

“I am very happy in Manchester and I have not thought about leaving,” the 29-year-old told Intergoles.

“But if Alex wants to use me to buy another player, then Real Madrid is the best alternative to United.”

“If that option comes and United are positive about the operation, then I would accept with pleasure.”

“I have a contract until 2012 with United and if people think I’m upset about being here, they are wrong.”

Evra’s agent Federico Pastorelo said his client is committed to seeing out the season with United before examining his future.

“We will sit down in the summer with Manchester United and decide whether he will extend his contract or move on,” Pastorelo told Sport.co.uk.

“But for the moment there is nothing special to say on the situation.”

“There has been interest, and I have read about Real Madrid but really the only official interest was from Inter Milan last summer.”

“We had a long chat with Sir Alex Ferguson and it was decided he would stay in Manchester. His contract runs out in the summer of 2012 and there he is concentrating and focused on this season.”

Evra happy at Old Trafford for now

Patrice Evra’s agent has quashed talk of an imminent move to Real Madrid by confirming Evra will remain at Manchester United until July.

Wolves moving in on Old Trafford

The next two away games for Wolves are at Old Trafford with a Carling Cup tie on Tuesday evening followed by the League game a week on Saturday. Maybe the players will be allowed to leave some of their belongings in the away dressing room to save carting them back and forth. But then I am sure both clubs will make a few changes so there won’t be many of the same players in action from the start in both games. United in fact only played on Sunday at Stoke so with only a two day break they will certainly be resting most of their star men in the Cup game. The reserve team for United is probably not as strong as we have been accustomed to over the years, but they will doubtless be able to field a team that would still occupy a good position in the Championship and maybe even the Premier League.

Wolves will have a number of players on the fringe of the first team who will surely be over the moon to get the chance to play in a competitive game at the Theatre of Dreams. And it makes sense for Wolves to be resting the majority of the first team squad ahead of the 2nd of the 4 league games against top opposition when Man City some to Molineux on Saturday.

I could see a team tomorrow something like;

Hennessey

Van Damme, Baath, Mouyokolo, Elokobi

Mujangi Bia, Mancienne, Davis, Hunt

Ebanks Blake, Fletcher

I would certainly like to see the young centre backs of Baath and Mouyokolo tested against good opposition cause I think both of them are potentially  first team regulars of the future, Hunt would probably benefit from more game time as long as he doesn’t have too many aches and pains after a long lay off, and it would be good to see the youngster recalled from Walsall, David Davis, get a game. Fletcher and SEB will need some match time and the chance to prove they are ready if McCarthy feels he wants to return to a 4-4-2 line up anytime soon.

There are actually some good chances in the next couple of weeks for these fringe players to get some meaningful action because  it is not only the first team that have a difficult run. The reserves are at home on the 1st and 8th November against Chelsea and Man Utd.

With regard to the first team there is no doubt that Milijas took his opportunity well on Saturday and it will be interesting to see how McCarthy sets up the team for the home game on Saturday. He might go for 4-4-2 at home with Fletcher or SEB partnering Doyle, but it is more likely that it will be 4-5-1 with Hunt and Jarvis occupying the wide positions from the start for the first time. Complicated choice for the central midfield though with Saturday’s trio of Edwards, Milijas and Jones competing with the return of both Henry and Mancienne. It would be a surprise if McCarthy didn’t select his captain Henry, and I can see Milijas and Jones keeping their places. I liked Milijas in the role ahead of the defence so he might play Henry a little further forward to get amongst the City midfield. If he did that then Mancienne might end up competing with Ward for the left back slot, although I do think the Irishman is unreasonably singled out for criticism by some Wolves fans.

I guess it’s why we wanted to be in this division to be playing all the big clubs, but we could probably have done without playing them all together especially considering the league position Wolves find themselves in. But although finding some kind of result during this difficult spell has to be the aim, the main thing is to emerge from the last of this run of games against Arsenal on  10th November with spirits and confidence still intact. And if perfomances remain at the standard set at Stamford Bridge on Saturday then we should achieve that objective.

But first things first and a result at Old Trafford would put Wolves in the Quarter Finals of the Carling Cup and a genuine chance of some Wembley glory. What would be more important, winning a cup or staying up? Financially the Premier League survival is by far the bigger prize, but the chance to win a trophy doesn’t come around too often and when you get two rounds from Wembley it all starts to feel a lot more important. And any success at Old Trafford would do wonders for everyone connected to the club no matter what the competition.
