Does Lucas Leiva deserve a contract extension?

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has signed a new long-term contract at Anfield.

His form this season has persuaded the Liverpool hierarchy to hand him a longer deal.

He has made over 100 Premier League appearances for the Reds since his arrival in 2007 from Gremio and become a first team regular.

Scapegoat

Liverpool fans have used the Brazilian as a scapegoat in the past for the clubs poor performances.

Every local radio phone in had people ringing in and saying that the Brazilian wasn’t good enough for Liverpool or he wasn’t a Liverpool quality player.

However this season he has changed the mind of a lot of his critics and performed at a far higher standard. His performances this season have shown that he has got decent ability.

He was just 20 years of age when he arrived from Gremio. He was highly-rated but very raw and it’s took him a long time to adapt to the English game. He is now looking like a player that could be important in the clubs future plans.

He has worked really hard to try and fulfil his potential. And the hard work has really paid off this season with his form vastly improved. He deserves great credit for the fact that despite being heavily criticised he didn’t let it get him down. He got his head down and worked his way into form.

International

Lucas has won 12 caps for his national side and was in the Brazil side that beat Scotland 2-0 last weekend. He acquitted himself well and didn’t look out of place in the centre of the Brazilian midfield. He has now featured in his countries last five international games.

Delighted

His club boss Kenny Dalglish is delighted that the Brazilian has extended his contract. He told Sky Sports:

“We are delighted. He is a smashing lad to have around the football club but he hasn’t been signed for that, he has been signed because of what he does on the pitch.

“Certainly since I came in he has been a great asset to the team and has done tremendously well. He’s happy to be here and play for the club and he’s getting everything that he deserves at the moment – including being a fixture in the Brazilian team – because of what he’s done on the pitch.”

Confidence

Under Kenny Dalglish Lucas’ confidence has gone from strength to strength. Lucas seems like the sort of player and person who needs to be confident to produce his best form and since the Scot has arrived Lucas he has been playing at the top of his game.

Turnaround

If you would have told Liverpool fans at the start of the season that Lucas Leiva would be one of their best players this season they would have laughed at you. However a lot of those fans who were on his back last season are now praising the midfielder.

He still isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but he has now many more backers than he had this time last season among the Liverpool faithful. Some Liverpool fans may not agree with me but I think 24 year-old deserves his contract extension.

William Gallas Delays Signing New Tottenham Contract Until Champions League Future Is Sorted

Tottenham Hotspur defender William Gallas will not sign a new contract at the club unless there is Champions League football on offer next season.

The 33-year-old signed a one-year deal last summer after joining on a free from fierce rivals Arsenal.

The France international is a key player for manager Harry Redknapp and has helped the club into the Champions League quarter-finals in their debut appearance in the tournament.

Gallas has said he is open to signing another deal with Tottenham but wants to see if the club can retain their place among Europe’s elite.

Spurs currently lie fifth in the table, just outside the four qualification spots but if they win this year’s competition they will gain entry for next season.

Redknapp confirms negotiations have started with the veteran, who he regards as ’one of the signings of the season’.

“The chairman’s doing a deal,” Redknapp told the Daily Telegraph

“William fully deserve it, he has been top class. He’s a nice man, a quiet man who just gets on with it.

“He could have gone abroad during the summer and made money, but the deal he did with us was an awful lot less than he was on at Arsenal.

“He has been one of the signings of the season. He has been magnificent for us and has played nearly all the games.”

Matthew Briggs Contract Extension

briggs Fulham FC announced on the official website today that Matthew Briggs has signed a new contract. It will see him at the club for another three years.

Briggs has been side-lined for a while due to an injury he picked up against Arsenal. But prior to that the 19-year-old made a good impression to Fulham fans after an impressive full debut in the 6-0 win over Port Vale.

This new contract is definitely good news and many congratulations to him.

A Fenway Friendly, Contract Renewals, and Other Sunday Notes

As expected, yesterday turned out to be a relatively uninspiring day on the football front—Everton got through on the back of a fantastic Tim Howard performance and a brilliantly-struck Leighton Baines free kick late in extra time, but other than that we didn’t get much for the neutral. To compound matters, Crawley Town went out and got the worst of the worst to sponsor their shirt for the match at Old Trafford, erasing any chance that Liverpool supporters could swing behind them. Only positive ended up being that it was a great way to advertise the “Don’t Buy the S*n” campaign.

So now it’s almost time to close down the weekend, with a handful of matches underway or yet to be played, and more to follow tomorrow afternoon before the week gets rolling with more Champions League action and the return leg of Liverpool’s tie with Sparta Prague. Typically I’m not one to wish away the days, but with no matches for Liverpool and waiting for some big personal news this coming Friday, the end of the week can’t come soon enough.

Thankfully today there’s a bit more to report on the Liverpool side of things to get through:

** I suppose it was inevitable that we’d get some Liverpool/Red Sox crossover action (besides ill-conceived t-shirts lacking in creativity), so yesterday’s news that a friendly could be coming to Fenway Park wasn’t all that surprising. For those of us stateside it’s great news—Liverpool’s senior squad haven’t been in the US since their 2004 tour, in which John Arne Riise gave birth to one of the more embarrassing commentary moments in recent memory. That aside, a return to the States with NESV/FSG backing was probably only a matter of time, and with recent preseason jaunts heading to other parts of the globe, it’d make sense to see Liverpool in action in the US in the near future.

** There was a brief moment of joy yesterday when I read the headline, “Reina and Kuyt Set to Pen New Kop Deals,” and then I realized it was in the Mirror, and I felt much shame, and then I felt even worse when I found out that the Mirror was borrowing from the People, because it was probably more likely that both would be leaving Liverpool by Thursday than actually working towards new deals.

So today’s news on the official site is of the confusing sort, as it confirms that Dirk Kuyt is actually working towards a new deal and proclaiming that he’s tied to Liverpool for the future:

“My contract has one more season to go after this but there are things happening. We have had some talks and I can only say it looks positive. I feel at home in Liverpool and I don’t want to leave here.

“It has been a difficult time for everyone at the club with the changes that have happened since last summer but now I can sense something good is happening – I think Liverpool are on the way back.”

This opens the window for a) debating about whether or not you actually want Dirk Kuyt to continue at Liverpool for years to come; and b) hoping that Reina’s in a similar spot. As for the former, I’m all for Kuyt sticking around longer and being a part of the squad, but I’m also hopeful that it doesn’t deter from the club going after reinforcements come the summer transfer window. I know there’s split opinions on how Kuyt should fit even in the current squad, so it’s likely that those among us who don’t have much time for him now probably won’t be lighting off fireworks at the news. Regarding the latter, though, I think we can all agree that any movement towards locking Reina in for good is a positive step.

** Stepping a bit closer to the edge in terms of speculation, there’s been talk in the past few days about Alberto Aquilani and a possible return to Liverpool. Aquilani kicked most of it off on Thursday by commenting on the uncertainty about whether or not the asking price will be met by Juventus, and since then he’s gone from “absolutely won’t return” to “probably still won’t return but there’s a glimmer of hope particularly when you’ve been drinking.” It’s not completely unlikely, but I think getting set on his return would be a bit much at this point. Maybe Kenny Dalglish’s return makes it closer to being within the realm of possibility, maybe not. Either way, we can agree that Christian Purslow should be drawn, quartered, and forced to watch Lucas compilations on repeat.

That’s about it for the weekend, so hopefully you’re all able to enjoy what’s left of it. I think we can all look forward to a quick week and Liverpool getting back into the swing of things for a brief spell—three matches in the next two weeks is all that’s promised, with Manchester United’s visit and the trip to Sunderland the only matches on the books at current for the month of March. Success on Thursday will obviously boost that a bit, but it’s another relatively lean month once the next two weeks have passed.ac
