Barcelona push for international pay change

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell said the European Club Association (ECA) wants FIFA and UEFA to pay their players in major tournaments.

Rosell feels that the current situation, where clubs pay their players although they are unavailable, is unfair and is hopeful that football’s governing bodies are open to change.

“Will clubs ask FIFA and UEFA to pay players during the World Cup or European Championship? This is what we are discussing with both institutions,” Rosell said to reporters in Doha.

“That could happen in the near future because we don’t think it’s fair that we pay the salaries and they use our players and they get income using our players.”

“This is something that has to be treated very seriously. We hope they will hear what we want to tell them.”

Rosell said the ECA also wanted UEFA to make changes to the Champions League to increase income for the clubs.

“We want to have the Champions League under the umbrella of UEFA, but we also want UEFA to hear our demands.”

“We are asking for more revenue. We are asking for governance, transparency and insurance.”

“We would like to have a Champions League with more teams. That means, one day we can play a Barcelona v Manchester United Champions League game on Saturday or Sunday.”

Rosell recently said it would benefit the top clubs if domestic leagues were reduced to 16 teams to give them a better chance to boost income.

Mario Balotelli; Change Your Attitude or Leave

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has something every other manager in world club football would give a right arm for; a blank cheque book. The City manager has vast financial backing and the ability to throw millions of pounds at international footballers around the globe to try and attract them to ply their trade at Eastlands. The Italian has selected countryman Mario Balotelli as one of the players he believes can fire City into Champions League qualification contention and lead the club into a new era. However, despite being a talented and physically able forward, the ex-Inter striker’s appeal is jaded by the fact that he has a terrible attitude and temperament, something that a leading club paying massive wages shouldn’t need to endure. Despite showing glimpses of excellence on the pitch in his first season in England, ‘Super Mario’ is often distant, lazy and disrespectful, and if the striker’s attitude doesn’t change Mancini would be best advised sending Balotelli back to Italy.

Balotelli signed for City back in August 2010 for a fee of

Daum targets change of fortune for Frankfurt

The ambitions of new Eintracht Frankfurt coach Christoph Daum extend far beyond securing the club’s Bundesliga status.

Daum, 57, joined Frankfurt on Tuesday following the dismissal of Michael Skibbe. He arrives to find the team 14th on the Bundesliga table, just three points clear of the relegation zone with seven matches left to play. While Daum acknowledges that his priority is to keep the team in the top flight, he also has grand plans for the future. “I’m not a fireman, I’m a concept coach,” Daum said.”Laying on of hands isn’t enough. I will work for Eintracht 25 hours a day.”"I want to create a spirit of optimism in Frankfurt. Eintracht are a traditional club with huge potential. I’m not thinking about the 2. Liga (second tier).”Daum, who has coached Bayer Leverkusen and Fenerbahce along with four other clubs in a 25-year managerial career, believes developing the right mentality within the squad is the key to success. “The head always plays an important role in football,” he said.”When it works properly then it is a third leg and can make the difference.”"The most important thing is to make ourselves safe as quickly as possible.”After the international break, Frankfurt’s next match is away to fellow strugglers Wolfsburg on April 3.

Ok so I used a cliche as my title, big freaking deal, the more important thing is the changes my faithful readers, there are some of you out there right?, will see for at least the rest of this season, if not longer. For those of you that have not heard, The Offside was recently purchased by the very large and talented SBNation. While this won’t mean a whole lot in terms of how this site changes in look, you are going to be seeing some new and exciting content here on The Everton Offside. SBNation already had an Everton site known as Royal Blue Mersey, and now both sites will be partnering up. The plan is to share duties on things such as match preview and reviews, along with various opinion articles that will posted. This means that sometimes I will be sending you over there for fantastic articles, and other times we will have some new folks over here.

So without further ado, head over to www.royalbluemersey.com and check out their great site

On twitter you can follow them @rbmersey

As for me, I can be found on twitter @Brian_Goodison, and you can also follow this blog @evertonoffside

As one final note, a big welcome to all the new folks coming to visit from Royal Blue Mersey, I look forward to getting to know everyone and hope you enjoy everything you find here. Until next time everyone COYB!

Coaching change for Tunisia

Ammar Souayah will take charge of the Tunisia national team for the second time following the sudden departure of Faouzi Benzarti.

Souayah, 53, is a former Tunisia international who served as national coach at the 2002 World Cup.

He will take charge of Tunisia’s qualification campaign to reach the 2012 African Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

The team are second in Group K with seven points from five matches played.

The appointment of Souayah followed Benzarti’s decision to quit the position just a month into his second spell as manager in the last year.

Also a former Tunisia international, the 61-year-old Benzarti led the team as caretaker at the 2010 African Cup of Nations in Angola.

He was tempted back in January, but quit again following the toppling of Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali as President of Tunisia.

Benzarti told Radio France international that he left because the task of qualifying for the Cup of Nations was too hard, his contract terms were not suitable and that he had been pressured into returning by Ben Ali.

“The presidency encouraged me to take the job saying I had to be nationalist and do my best for our people,” Benzarti said.

“But now I feel free like the rest of the Tunisian people and we can make decisions not only for the common good but for ourselves too.”
