Bundesliga wrap: Hannover stun Bayern

Bayern Munich blew a golden chance to move six points clear on top of the Bundelsiga when they slumped to a 2-1 loss at Hannover on Sunday.

Hannover took the lead after 23 minutes when Norwegian striker Mohammed Abdellaoue slotted home a penalty after Philipp Lahm fouled Steve Cherundolo inside the box.

Things got worse for the visitors when Jerome Boateng was sent off five minutes later after an altercation with Christian Schulz.

Hannover made their numerical advantage count five minutes after the break when Christian Pander scored their second.

The hosts also found themselves down to 10 men when Cherundolo was dismissed for a second bookable offence, and an 83rd-minute goal from Bayern substitute David Alaba set up a frantic finish to the match.

But Bayern could not force an equaliser as Jupp Heynckes’ men slumped to their second defeat of the season.

Elsewhere on Sunday, a late Jefferson Farfan strike lifted Schalke to third in the standings with a 1-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen.

The result leaves Schalke just four points behind Bayern and one behind reigning Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund.

Bundesliga wrap: Wins for Dortmund, Bayern

Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund wrapped up a Champions League berth on Sunday, while Bayern Munich edged closer to one of their own.

Dortmund ensured a top-three finish is the minimum that awaits them at campaign’s end with a 3-0 win over visiting Freiburg, shortly after Bayern rode Mario Gomez’s hat-trick to a 5-1 thumping of second-placed Bayer Leverkusen.

Leverkusen’s heavy defeat allowed Dortmund to open up an eight-point lead at the top with four games remaining, while Bayern leapfrog Hannover into third place.

Dortmund imposed themselves on the contest early and took a deserved lead through Mario Gotze in the 23rd minute.

The Germany midfielder gleefully finished past Freiburg goalkeeper Oliver Baumann after Marcel Schmelzer played his way to the goal-line and pulled a pass back for his team-mate.

It only got more one-sided as Poland international Robert Lewandowski – who had earlier made a mess of two gilt-edged opportunities – pounced on Omer Toprak’s deflection, rounded Baumann and poked into the open net on 43 minutes.

Chances flew thick and fast in the second half as Freiburg searched for a goal, but it was Dortmund who would succeed once more as Kevin Grosskreutz made the most of a terrific squared ball by Gotze for a 3-0 result 12 minutes from time.

Elsewhere, Bayern gave Leverkusen manager Jupp Heynckes a good look at the talent that will be at his disposal next season with a classy 5-1 victory at the Allianz Arena.

Heynckes is set to take over from caretaker boss Andries Jonker at Bayern next term, but will see out the season in charge of Leverkusen.

And while Bayern’s win came at the expense of his current side, Heynckes will be gladdened that he will soon have the services of Gomez, who extended his goal tally to a league-leading 22 with a hat-trick inside 20 first-half minutes.

The early signs were ominous for Leverkusen when midfielder Simon Rolfes deflected Franck Ribery’s cross into his own net in the seventh minute to gift Bayern a 1-0 lead.

Frontman Gomez took over from there, knocking in Thomas Muller’s cross in the 28th minute and again in the 44th minute.

The Germany international then nabbed his hat-trick goal on a counter-attack in first-half injury time, blasting a low, angled strike that was simply too good for Leverkusen goalkeeper Rene Adler.

With four goals to their credit, Bayern had no need to press in the second half and seemed content to sit back until Leverkusen striker Eren Derdiyok smashed a cross into the roof of the net in the 62nd minute.

That prompted a brief flurry of activity from the hosts, who earned their fifth and final goal through Ribery after the France international played himself into the area on a one-two with Daniel van Buyten and clinically finished past Adler.

Bayern chief says Robben will stay

Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is adamant that Arjen Robben will remain at Alianz Arena despite speculations linking him with a summer move to Milan.

Arjen Robben has recently stated that he is not interested in playing Europa League football, but Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says the Dutchman will not be sold even if Bayern fail to ensure Champions League football.

Champions League qualification crucial for Bayern

This season Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich have endured an awful season by their high standards.

The Bavarian giants are currently fourth in the German top flight, seven points behind second place Bayer Leverkusen.

Second

Germany currently only has two automatic Champions League spots and a place in the Champions League play-offs.

Finishing in the top two of the Bundesliga is imperative for the German giants. As striker Mario Gomez admitted the Bayern players don’t fancy a trip to Bulgaria to play in front of 3,000 fans.

Bayer Leverkusen, as I have mentioned in previous articles seem to get an attack of nerves just when they look set to be successful. Ironically Bayer are managed by Bayern-bound head coach Jupp Heynckes but look to be in pole position to clinch the automatic Champions League spot.

Leverkusen have enjoyed another good season and if they can avoid their annual end of season collapse then they should be able to clinch one of the automatic Champions League spots. However it’s unlikely that they can catch runaway leaders Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga.

The Bundesliga surprise package Hannover 96 are currently third two points ahead of Bayern. Bayern will be confident that they can leapfrog the minnows into third place.

Underachieving

Bayern Munich should have performed far better than they have this season with the players they have in their squad. Unfortunately even the biggest clubs struggle when their star players pick up injuries.

Bayern star wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben have been missing from the side through injury for large periods of the season. If the pair had been fit then maybe the season wouldn’t have been the struggle it has been.

Bayern had a lot to live up to following last season’s fantastic campaign, as Bayern won a domestic treble and also got to the final of the Champions League. It would have been near impossible for Bayern to have been as successful as last season.

Future

Bayern will be looking to secure Champions League football for next season with ex-head coach Jupp Heynckes returning to the club from second place Bayer Leverkusen. Heynckes won two Bundesliga titles in his first spell at Bayern and he will be hoping that when he arrives the club are in the best possible shape.

He will inherit a squad from Louis Van Gaal full of underperforming international players. The current Bayern squad will need to impress between now and the end of the season if they are to be in Heynckes plans for next season.

I can see Heynckes having a full overhaul of his squad. If reports are to be believed Heynckes could raid his former club for some of their top players.

Reputation

For now though current boss Louis Van Gaal has the task of trying to ensure the club make the Champions League and retain their reputation as one of the biggest clubs in Europe. No doubt next season the Bavarian club will enjoy a better season because by Bayern’s standards it couldn’t really get any worse.

Bayern Munich Appoint Jupp Heynckes As Manager On Two-Year Deal

Bayern Munich have appointed Bayer Leverkusen coach Jupp Heynckes as their new manager.

The 65-year-old will return for his third spell at the Bundesliga club on July 1 after signing a two-year contract.

He replaces Dutchman Louis van Gaal whose contract will be terminated at the end of the season.

Heynckes first led Bayern between 1987 and 1991, winning two Bundesliga titles, before moving to coach Real Madrid among others.

In 2009 he returned for five games to steer the club into the Champions League after the sacking of Jurgen Klinsmann.

Currently he was won plaudits for turning around the fortunes of Leverkusen, who are in second and on course for the Champions League.

He was always the preferred choice of Bayern’s board but did fight off Fulham manager Mark Hughes for the job.

Heynckes is obviously delighted with his return to the Allianz Arena.

“Aside from the good personal relationships I have with the leading figures at Bayern, the club has always impressed me with its professionalism,” he said.

“I have twice been Bayern coach and always appreciated the working environment.

“It’s natural that you have to have success as Bayern coach, I understand that but I see it as a fascinating task to achieve it with the team over the next two seasons.”

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “Jupp Heynckes was our preferred candidate. We are very happy that we could reach agreement on a two-year contract.

“I’m convinced that with Jupp Heynckes we will have a successful collaboration. ”

Heynckes to Bayern for third time

Bayern Munich have confirmed that Jupp Heynckes will replace Louis van Gaal as coach of the Bavarian giants at the end of the season.

Heynckes is currently in charge of Bayer Leverkusen but has agreed a two-year deal to take over at Bundesliga rivals Bayern. He will replace Van Gaal, who took Bayern to a double of league championship and DFB Cup in 2010 but has struggled to repeat that success this season.Heynckes, 65, has managed Bayern on two previous occasions, first between 1987 and 1991 – winning two league championships – and as caretaker in 2009. “Jupp Heynckes was our first choice,” Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said in a statement.”We are very happy that we could reach an agreement on a two-year contract. I’m convinced that we will have a successful relationship with Jupp Heynckes.”Heynckes was full of praise for his future employers and knows expectations will be high when he takes charge at the Allianz Arena. “Apart from the good personal relations I’ve had with the management of Bayern Munich, it has always impressed me how professionally this club is run,” Heynckes said.”I have twice been Bayern coach and always appreciated the working environment.”"It’s natural that you have to have success as Bayern coach, I understand that but I see it as a fascinating task to achieve it with the team over the next two seasons.”

A host of Premiership sides have shown interest in Napoli stars Ezequiel Lavezzi and Marek Hamsik, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Lavezzi and Hamsik have been instrumental in Napol’s push for the Serie A title, attracting admiring glances from a number of Premier League clubs.

Manchester City scouts have reportedly watched Lavezzi in action several times this season, with the Citizens preparing a summer bid for the Argentine.

Marek Hamsik, on the other side, is a target for Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool, and he is set to spark a real bidding war in the summer.

Hughes refutes Bayern rumours

Mark Hughes has quashed speculation linking him with the manager’s job at Bayern Munich, insisting he is fully committed to Fulham.

Reports have suggested that Hughes, who took over at Fulham at the beginning of the season after Roy Hodgson’s departure to Liverpool, is on the shortlist to take the reins at the German club after confirmation current manager Louis van Gaal would leave at the end of the current campaign.

But the Welshman denied he was considering leaving Craven Cottage.

“I wasn’t aware that I was in for the (Bayern Munich) job,” Hughes said. “I’m not interested as I am quite happy here at the moment.”

“If an opportunity presents itself in the future then we will see, however, I am not even considering looking at the moment.”

“I am enjoying my time at the club and I think we are going in the right direction. I think if we can invest more in the players next season I believe we can kick on. That’s certainly my focus at the minute.”

Hughes’ side face Everton this Saturday, and the Fulham boss hopes to have midfielder Dickson Etuhu available for the game at Goodison Park.

Etuhu aggravated a hamstring injury against Blackburn a fortnight ago, but Hughes may be handed a major boost by the midfielder’s return to fitness.

“Etuhu twinged his hamstring last week but he trained today (Thursday). We will just have to wait and see how he does tomorrow,” Hughes said.

But despite the possibility of a return for Etuhu, fellow-midfielder Steve Sidwell will not be available for the trip to Merseyside because of a knee injury.

The game, which is the Premier League’s late kick-off on Saturday, looks set to be a tight affair with Fulham sitting 11th in the Premier League, only two places behind Everton.

However, Fulham are yet to pick up a point at Goodison Park in the Premier League and have only scored five goals in their last nine games at Everton in the league.

Champions League: Inter beat Bayern in a thriller

By Shourin Roy on March 16, 2011 11:21 AM | Comments | TrackBacksShare|

Samuel Eto'o fires the first goal for Inter before two defensive lapses cost them the lead. Julio Cesar bobbles Arjen Robben's shot and Mario Gomez makes him pay by hooking the ball into an empty net. Minutes later, Dejan Stankovic deflects Robben's cross invitingly into the path of Thomas Mueller and the German flicking the ball over the spreadeagled Cesar.

Cesar makes up for it effecting a brilliant but risky save off Frank Ribery's shot after the Frenchman is sent free after Andrea Ranocchia bites on the ball. At the other end Thomas Kraft brings down Stankovic for what appeared to be a clear penalty and a sending off. But the goalkeeper survives as the referee does not entertain Inter's appeals.

Bayern come close as Gomez turns Ribery's floated cross across goal towards the far post. Both Ranocchia and Mueller scramble with the centre back sliding in fractionally before to turn the ball away before it rolls over the goal line. The ball deflects off the German's foot back to goal but fortuitously balloons off the upright and Cesar is able to collect.

Lucio gets into all sorts of trouble trying to finesse the ball away but succumbs to Mueller and Ribery's pressure and is in danger of conceding a goal but the Frenchman is called offside. Cesar then spectacularly saves Gomez's volley off yet another Ribery cross.

Inter's equalizer comes after the newly introduced Phillipe Coutinho sends a long diagonal ball to Eto'o. With the Bayern defense trying to reset - the striker lays the ball off for Wesley Sneijder whose acutely angled shot finds the gap between Kraft and the far post.

With Bayern fading Inter comes close as Cambiasso, Coutinho, and Sneijder dominate the ball. The breakthrough comes after Eto'o, whose play making skills close to goal is vastly underrated latches onto a long ball, shrugs off an Inter defender, and cuts in to lay off a pass off to the arriving Goran Pandev who cracks the ball over Kraft.

Eto'o scored the first goal and had a hand in the other two. He made all the difference. The club has also regained its footing under Leonardo. Since taking over on 24th December 2010, the club has won 11 of its 14 matches and gained 34 points to pull it to second place, 5 points behind Milan.

Champions League: Bayern Munich 3 Inter Milan 2

Inter Milan stole a Champions League quarter-finals berth with a thrilling 3-2 win at Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

The defending European champions played the way champions tend to when up against it, reeling in a 2-1 deficit at the break to secure their trip to the last eight on away goals.

But it was heartbreak for Bayern, who won the first leg at the San Siro 1-0 and seemed to have exacted their revenge for last season’s loss in the Champions League final, only for Goran Pandev to strike a stunning winner in the 88th minute.

With their domestic campaign lost to Borussia Dortmund and the DFB Cup gone, Bayern’s painful exit ensures manager Louis van Gaal will depart on a low note at season’s end.

Inter could not have asked for a better start at the Allianz Arena than the one Samuel Eto’o handed them, the prolific Cameroon striker stealing through Bayern’s napping defence and sliding his shot underneath goalkeeper Thomas Kraft in just the fourth minute.

But the early blow galvanised Bayern, who responded with a flurry of chances that should have given the hosts a comfortable advantage at the break.

Inter custodian Julio Cesar, whose dreadful error gifted Bayern their winner at the San Siro, made another howler when he allowed Arjen Robben’s fierce effort to bounce off his chest and into the path of Mario Gomez.

The dangerous striker ran back with the flighted ball and deftly lobbed it over Cesar’s head, restoring Bayern’s advantage in the 21st minute.

Another Inter error, this time from defender Lucio, handed Bayern their second 10 minutes later.

The Brazilian stopper got an inadvertent touch to Robben’s pass in search of Gomez, knocking the ball free for Thomas Mueller to chip a shot over the onrushing Cesar.

Gomez produced the first threat on goal after the interval with a stinging volley that Cesar acrobatically knocked clear.

The tie was cast wide moments later as Wesley Sneijder drew Inter within a goal of the last eight, skidding a long-range strike into the far corner following Eto’o's assist.

Inter pressed for the crucial away goal, leaving Bayern’s defence scrambling on several occasions as Sneijder and Eto’o went close.

But in the end it was Macedonian striker Pandev who fired the Italian champions into the quarter-finals.

The winning goal owed much to the good work of the omnipresent Eto’o, who stole his way around Holger Badstuber and whipped a pass into space for Pandev to slam the ball into the net.

The goal prompted wild celebrations at the Inter touchline, with boss Leonardo overcome with joy as his resurrection of the Italian giants reaches greater heights.
