Liverpool And Arsenal Target £20m FC Porto Defender

20million target for Liverpool and Arsenal according to his agent Peppino Tirri.

The 25-year-old is under contract until 2014 and is apparently open to a move to the Premier League.

The Portugal international has won 10 caps for his country and has helped his side win the Portuguese league with five games to spare.

Liverpool have been linked with a move for the defender for a while as they seek a long-term replacement for Jamie Carragher and Sotirios Kyrgiakos.

Now Arsenal have entered the race as their own defensive frailties have emerged again and again this season.

Tirri claims there are two Premier League clubs after the highly-rated centre-back but the two teams could face more competition from Europe.

Arsenal Manager Tempted By Swoop For Tottenham Defender

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is contemplating a sensational summer swoop for Tottenham Hotspur defender Jonathan Woodgate.

The 31-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and is unlikely to be offered a new deal because of his poor injury record.

But this will not put off the Gunners boss, who is looking for an experienced defender to be used as back-up in his squad.

The Frenchman believes Thomas Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny and Johan Djourou are good enough defenders to win Arsenal the Premier League for the first time in seven years.

But injury concerns over Djourou and Vermaelen highlights the issue of only having Sebastian Squillaci as cover.

Wenger sees Woodgate as the perfect back-up. Wenger was even interested in buying the former Real Madrid player when he joined Tottenham from Middlesbrough. Arsenal were linked with a move for the centre back by Sky Sports in January and it appears there is still a great deal of interest in the former England international.

Woodgate will be offered a one-year rolling contract according to our sources and Wenger will be keeping an eye on the centre-back to see if he is worth taking a risk on.

Over the years several defenders have switched allegiances in North London. Sol Campbell left Tottenham for Arsenal in 2001, while William Gallas did the opposite last summer.

Tottenham Likely to Sign Manchester United Defender This Summer

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp is set to take advantage of defender Wes Brown’s falling out with Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United by signing the full back this summer.
The England international and his manager at Old Trafford have reportedly not seen eye to eye for some time now, with the 31 year old barely having been spotted in a United shirt in recent seasons after the pair had a spectacular falling out last summer.
And, with Redknapp known to be in the market for a new right back at the end of this season due to continued and lingering doubts over current duo, Croatia international Vedran Corluka and his understudy at White Hart Lane, Scotland international Alan Hutton, it is believed the Tottenham boss will make a move for Brown.
Brown himself has told friends that he does not expect to be offered a new long-term deal to stay with United and would relish the chance to resurrect his career in north London.

SOURCE: Sportingo

Having reportedly fallen out with Sir Alex Ferguson earlier in the season it was only a matter of time before the experienced utility man looked at making an exit and if Tottenham are genuinely interested then it could well be a good move for the England international to make.

Wes Brown has featured a few times this season but in reality the only reason that he has figured in Ferguson’s plans at all has been down to suspensions and injuries forcing his hand and to be honest when called in the Manchester United man has not covered himself in glory and it seems like this summer would be the right time to move on.

The emergence of Chris Smalling at Manchester United has seen Brown slip down the pecking order at centre back with Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Jonny Evans also ahead of the one club man. At right back he has similarly been usurped by Brazilian youngster Rafael with John O’Shea also standing in his way.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has split right back duties at White Hart Lane between Vedran Corluka and Alan Hutton with neither really securing the position as their own and much has been made of the North London club’s various injury concerns at the centre of their defence with the likes of William Gallas, Jonathan Woodgate, Michael Dawson and Ledley King all having had their fair share of time out with various knocks.

Barcelona Defender Eric Abidal to Undergo Surgery for Liver Tumour

Barcelona defender Eric Abidal is to undergo surgery after it was discovered that he has a liver tumour.
The 31-year-old French international has played for his country at two World Cups in Germany and South Africa.
Abidal joined the Spanish league leaders from Lyon in 2007 and has been a regular this season on their route to the Champions League quarter-finals.
Kaka, Cesc Fabregas and Jack Wilshere are some of the fellow players who have sent their best wishes to Abidal.
The Spanish club made the announcement on Tuesday and gave no indication on how long he will be sidelined.
It said: “A liver tumour has been detected in the player Eric Abidal and he will be treated surgically next Friday.
“Abidal will be operated on by Dr Josep Fuster Obregon. Per the express wish of the player, we call for the utmost respect for the right to privacy,” they added.
Barcelona later confirmed that Abidal will be operated upon at the BarnaClinic Grup Hospital Clinic, in the city. (BBC Sport)

We would like to offer our wholehearted support to the French international at this time and hope for a speedy recovery.

Liverpool defender Kelly out for month

Liverpool defender Martin Kelly will miss a month of football after tearing a hamstring in Sunday’s 3-1 loss at West Ham.

Liverpool’s head of sports medicine Dr Peter Brukner confirmed the 20-year-old would face four weeks on the sidelines because of the injury.

Kelly was charging down the flank Upton Park during the first half of the English Premier League encounter when he pulled up abruptly clutching his thigh, and the youngster had to be replaced by Joe Cole.

Kelly told The Liverpool Echo he was disappointed by the blow, but was confident of a quick return to the first team.

“I took Scott Parker on down the right and when I took my last touch I felt a pull in my hamstring and there was no way I could carry on,” he said.

“I’m usually a quick healer and we have good medical staff at the club so hopefully I will be back soon.”

He will miss Sunday’s tussle with Manchester United at Anfield, the Europa League last-16 match against Braga and the league game at Sunderland on March 20.

Bolton lose another defender

Bolton have been dealt another injury blow with defender Sam Ricketts facing an indefinite spell on the sidelines.

After losing Zat Knight for up to six weeks with an ankle ligament injury sustained in Sunday’s win over Everton in the Premier League, Bolton boss Owen Coyle can now add Ricketts to the casualty list.

The 29-year-old damaged his Achilles during his side’s 1-0 win over Wigan in their FA Cup fourth-round replay at the DW Stadium and had to be carried off on a stretcher.

“He has damaged his Achilles and it doesn’t look great at this time,” said Coyle.

“The medical team think it could be quite severe and we hope that is not the scenario, but the way it is looking right now, I think it is going to be a lengthy period of time.

“I think he just went to recover as Moses was raiding for Wigan, and it looked innocuous, but because of the speed the game is played at – he has certainly damaged his Achilles, that is for sure. I just need to find out the extent of it on Thursday when it is looked at properly.”

AC Milan Defender Nicola Legrottaglie Kneed In Head On Debut (Video)

no comments by Mad Dog and Glory on February 2nd, 2011

I have watched this video 27 times and I still can’t work out if the kneeing to the head by Lazio striker Libor Kozak was deliberate. Veteran defender Nicola Legrottaglie was taking part in his first Ac Milan game and kind of put himself in something of a silly position, for some reason deciding to head the ball to his team-mate whilst the ball is about six inches from the ground, this leads to him taking one hell of a whack in the head that apparently led to a trip to the hospital and some stitches (in that order). Accident or foul play?
