Di Matteo Sacking

Yes, I know it happened a few days ago but, as you may be, I am still unhappy and a bit confused, I figured it was still worth talking about.  So there.

For me, this sacking was a bit unexpected.  So we may be out of the table solely on goal differential, but the club has played much better than the league position shows.  In the past month, specifically in the Wigan and Man United (still not quite sure how that wasn’t a red for Red Nev) matches, the squad has performed admirably yet the end result was underwhelming.  The signs were so favorable though.  Di Matteo had the squad playing nice, attractive football that, quite frankly, is hard to find recently.  Sure, teams like Stoke and ______ (insert random Sam Allardyce team here) play the hoof and hope game and yeah it does get results, but who enjoys watching those games?  The only way they are ever entertaining is when the other team manages to break down their back line and bang in 4.

The sacking definitely should not have come on the heels to a 3-0 loss to Man City, especially when the match was in Manchester.  For a coach that lead us successfully out of the championship and off to a great start this year, I’m surprised we haven’t decided to stick with him.  At least give him a year.  It’s no secret that the best managers (Ferguson, Wenger) have been at their respective clubs for a long time.  When you have a manager that knows the right way to play and is at your club, why would you sack him?  Especially in the week after the transfer window ended.  It’s just silly.

The hardest part will be finding a new, suitable coach for our squad.  Michael Appleton is currently the favorite (odds are 5/2 I believe), and he is currently the caretaker manager, and it appears that the best chance he would have is if WBA win on the weekend when we host strugglers West Ham.  I’m not exactly sure why they would fire the coach due to a lack of results and then promote someone with no experience.  No offense to Mr. Appleton, but I hope they find an experienced coach that has battled relegation before and knows what the dangers are.  However, the few big name coaches we have been linked with are Martin Jol, Big Sam, Uncle Roy and Chris Hughton, most of which are either not experienced enough (Hughton) or play the wrong way (Big Sam and Uncle Roy) for my taste.   That leaves only Martin Jol as a potential candidate in my mind.

Whatever happens, I hope it all works out in the end, and we don’t lose the quick tempo, free flowing passing game that we have all become accustomed to and grown to love.

Di Matteo braced for hectic stretch

Roberto Di Matteo will have no time for Christmas cheer if West Brom let their good form slip in the coming weeks.

West Brom travel to Bolton on Sunday and Di Matteo knows that the busy Christmas schedule provides a stern test for his side.

“If you are not in a good position at Christmas then the whole period does not mean much to you,” Di Matteo said.

“And even if you have a good Christmas and are poor after then the period means nothing then either. The importance of this period is just based in how many games there are in a short period of time that stretches the squads.”

The Italian manger is also concerned about the threat Bolton’s in form strikers pose to his defenders.

“They are very effective and they have got Johan Elmander scoring goals and having a goal scorer like that, as we all know, can really affect your season. They have two goal scorers now in Elmander and Kevin Davies,” Di Matteo said.

The former Chelsea player also thinks his opposing manager, Owen Coyle, has made Bolton a more aesthetically pleasing team to watch.

Di Matteo is also not averse to the prospect of playing more games in the English summer time and he thinks fans would approve of attending matches in warmer temperatures.

“Every year at this time we talk about the same issues; frozen pitches, postponed games and the safety of the supporters who come to watch the game,” he said.

“Last season in the Championship our season ended on May 2 and this year we will finish on May 22 so I think there is plenty of room to extend the season into the summer when the weather is nice and people would love to watch a game and the pitches will be in perfect condition.”
