Former Liverpool Hero Keen On £8m Anfield Return

Former Liverpool favourite John Arne Riise has sparked talk of a possible Anfield return after suggesting that he would be open to a move back to the Merseyside club he represented from 2002 to 2008. The Norwegian international is currently at Roma but has been linked with a move away from the Stadio Olimpico after an average season at the Serie A side.

Liverpool are reportedly looking for a new left back and have previously been strongly linked with Everton’s Leighton Baines and Newcastle United full back Jose Enrique. Kenny Dalglish will have been encouraged by the performances of youngster Jack Robinson but may feel that he needs a more experienced player to fill the position that has been handed to a number of players this season.

Paul Konchesky was the original first choice under Roy Hodgson but the former Fulham man struggled to find form and has been sent out on loan to Nottingham Forest. Fabio Aurelio has struggled for fitness and at times Glen Johnson and Danny Wilson have both been called in as emergency back up.

Gronkjaer keen to give former club the blues

FC Copenhagen’s Jesper Gronkjaer is eagerly anticipating the chance to pit himself against former club Chelsea in the Champions League.

Danish champions Copenhagen host the English Premier League title-holders at the Parken Stadion on Tuesday in the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie.

They will meet again at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge on March 16, with Gronkjaer excited about the opportunity of returning to the stadium he called home from 2000 and 2004.

“It’s going to be a special night,” Gronkjaer, 33, said.

“Not so much tomorrow, but the game at the Bridge in four weeks time. We want to finish the talking now and get on with the game and, to have a chance tomorrow, we have to play our own game otherwise it’s going to be hard.”

Copenhagen’s biggest challenge in the match will be to match Chelsea physically.

With the Danish league on a three-month winter break, they have not played a competitive game since December 7.

Regardless of their lack of match practise, Gronkjaer insists the hosts will be seeking to take the game to Chelsea right from the kick-off.

“We’ll try and get our top form tomorrow and we also know if we reach our top form we can cause problems tomorrow,” he said.

“I think we’re confident and we’ve had a good build up to the game, so now I’m just looking forward to playing.”

Gronkjaer coach Stale Solbakken echoed the sentiments of his veteran winger, but would also be content to emerge from the first leg with honours even.

“0-0 is a good result for us, but it’s our home game and obviously we’ll go for it,” Solbakken said.

“So it will be make or break for us tomorrow. I think we should decide the pace of the game and obviously try and get as good a result is as possible. So 0-0 isn’t that bad.”

Benzema plans pay back on former club Lyon

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema believes his former club Lyon are in safe hands under manager Claude Puel.

France international Benzema spent his final season at Lyon under Puel before joining Real for a reported fee of 35 million euros.

Now in his second season in La Liga, Benzema will return to the Stade de Gerland on Tuesday for the first leg of a Champions League round of 16 tie.

And with 49-year-old tactician Puel in the home dugout, Benzema has no illusions about the challenge facing the Spanish visitors.

“He (Puel) is a very good coach, and he is at a club now which is competing for the title and playing in the Champions League on a regular basis, so he has the chance to get the success there that he deserves,” Benzema told Ligue1.com.

“Without doubt, he is a top coach.”

Benzema was part of the Real team that lost 2-1 on aggregate to Lyon over two legs at the same stage of the competition last season.

And the 23-year-old is keen to pay the French side back by moving ino the last eight at their expense this time.

“It’s always great to go back to the club where I started my career,” he said.

“I have many fantastic memories from my time there, but as much as I love Lyon, I really hope we can beat them this time.”

“The mistake we made last year was that we just felt we were superior to them without proving it on the pitch.”

“Everyone here dismissed Lyon as a team that we would easily beat, but it was not like that, and it will be really tough again this time.”

Duff Sticks It To His Former Club

It feels good to be back. I haven’t been able to log on since  Saturday. The Offside had a record number of visitors on Sunday & Monday, which caused the server to go a bit wonky, preventing me from logging in. Then once I could log in yesterday, I lost power thanks to the “Snowgasm” in the midwest.

Since I missed out, here’s a quick weekend recap: We kicked Tottenham’s ass in the FA Cup and we picked up an over the hill Icelandic striker as the transfer window closed shut. Thankfully, I got my internet back up and running in time to watch Fulham this afternoon and obviously, I’m thrilled with the outcome.

After a scrappy, yet scoreless first half, I had a feeling we were in for a 0-0 draw. However, thanks to Damien Duff, we earned 3 valuable points and a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United.  In the 67th minute, Danny Murphy lofted a gem of a pass over the head of Jose Enrique, finding Duff who made a splendid run. Duff then fired a shot past Steve Harper, sending the Cottage supporters into a frenzy and lifting a giant monkey off the shoulders of our Irish midfielder.

Our boys played well the entire match, but I felt we shined in the second half. Our back four played very well, Mark Schwarzer showed now signs of jet lag guarding the net, Steve Sidwell & Danny Murphy played well in the middle & Clint Dempsey, Moussa Dembele & Andy Johnson looked threatening up front. However, most encouraging to me was the play of Gael Kakuta, who is on loan for the remainder of the season from Chelsea. Kakuta replaced Andy Johnson around the 70th minute and nearly scored his first Fulham goal shortly after. He was very active and didn’t seem lost at all, which is sometimes the case with a new player. Look for the kid to log more minutes on Saturday.

Fulham are now 12th in the table with 29 points. Considering where we were like a month ago, trust me, I’ll take this. We got a rough stretch ahead, starting with our trip to Villa Park on Saturday, but if we continue to play at the high level we are currently playing at, don’t be shocked if we nick another 3 points on the road this weekend.

Former Liverpool defender Avi Cohen dead

Ex Liverpool defender Avi Cohen, the first ever Israeli footballer to play in England’s top division, has died after sustaining injuries in a motor cycle accident. The death of Cohen, 54, was announced by his son Tamir, who plays for Bolton Wanderers in the Premiership.

Cohen made 24 appearances for Liverpool between 1979 and 1981.

At the time of his death, Cohen was also chairman of the Israeli Professional Footballers Association.

Apart from Liverpool, Cohen also represented Glasgow Rangers, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Maccabi Netanya in his career.

Former Chelsea boy nets hat trick

Scotty Sinclair spent five years at Chelsea. Well, five years in the very loosest of terms. Six loans later, the 21-year-old finds himself at Swansea City. Permanently.

He appears to have found himself a home. Sinclair bagged his first career hat trick on Tuesday, in Swansea’s 3-1 win over Peterborough United in the third round of the Carling Cup. Well done.

I always enjoyed seeing Sinclair in the blue of Chelsea. He never quite translated his potential – enormous at one point – onto the field, though. A change of scenery was certainly necessary, and perhaps he has indeed finally found his level.

Brendan Rodgers, the former Chelsea youth team manager, is in charge there so, obviously, that might be a massive part of the quick transition. Either way, I do hope Scotty has turned the proverbial corner.

We at The CO wish him all the best.
