Rooney out of Man Utd trip to Chelsea

Wayne Rooney won't make Manchester United's trip to Chelsea.

The Daily Mail says Rooney trained on his own with a physio on Friday morning and will definitely miss Manchester United's crucial trip to Chelsea on Sunday.

The 28-year-old has been out with a long-standing thigh injury and was recently allowed leave for a warm-weather break in Egypt.

Rooney is now back at Carrington after doing some fitness work abroad with United’s head of human performance Richard Hawkins – who accompanied him on a similar trip to Portland, Oregon in 2010.

"He's back and he's looking good but he's not ready for this game," manager David Moyes said. "He's done some running on the grass and I don't want to put a date on his return but I've watched him running and he's in good condition. He's kept himself right while he's been away."

Premier League: QPR 1 Chelsea 0

QPR defeated nine-man Chelsea 1-0 to notch their first home win of the season as a Heidar Helguson penalty separated the West London rivals.

Chelsea played the entire second half with nine men as Jose Bosingwa and Didier Drogba were both sent off in the first period of a fiery and combative game at Loftus Road.

QPR got off to an ideal start as a strong run from Helguson ended in David Luiz body checking the Icelandic international to give the hosts a penalty.

Helguson converted the spot kick despite Petr Cech doing well to get a hand on the ball.

A sublime through ball from Adel Taarabt then provided an opening for winger Shaun Wright-Phillips who set off in a foot race with Bosingwa, only to be brought down as he approached the penalty box.

In a highly controversial decision, referee Chris Foy pulled the red card from his pocket after deeming Bonsingwa to be the last man in Chelsea’s defence at the time of the foul.

With the opening half nearing an end matters got worse for Chelsea as a mindless two-footed lunge from Drogba reduced Andres Villas-Boas’ side to nine men.

The Ivorian had lost possession of the ball and was clearly frustrated as he flung himself at the ankles of Taarabt, who needed treatment following the foul.

With Chelsea playing with huge gaps in their formation, space was always open for QPR to exploit in the second half Taarabt did just that when his defence-splitting pass found Luke Young, whose right-footed shot flashed across the face of Cech’s goal.

A pair of possible Chelsea penalties were turned down late on as Frank Lampard tumbled to the ground under a challenge from Fitz Hall, while Luiz also had his appeals for a foul waved away by Foy.

Chelsea’s best and final chance of levelling up the affair fell to substitute Nicolas Anelka who missed a golden opportunity when he directed his close-range header straight to QPR goalkeeper Paddy Kenny.

PL Recap: Manchester United 2-1 Chelsea

Beware the Ides of May.

Isolated, in perhaps more ways than one

Not exactly how the saying goes, but fitting for Carlo, embattled as he is. The soothsayer on this occasion? A certain dynamic Mexican.

First glance
My initial reaction to the result, less than two hours afterward

Not inside 20 minutes. Not 10, nor five. But 36 seconds. Thirty-six fucking seconds.

That’s all it took for our side to lose all sense of discipline and, in the most infuriating sense, giftwrap Manchester United a 19th league title. Seriously, what the hell? You know, I hadn’t even settled into my usual lounging position. All I could do was chuckle at the full-on ridiculousness of it all.

The game was over at that point. All of a minute in, and we were done. The rest of the opening half bordered on a joke. Sans Cech, who once again was sensational, and we’re on the end of an embarrassing scoreline – not that it wasn’t embarrassing anyway. Yeah, it was. Considering the implications and stage, our worst display of the season. Without question.

United’s second goal, through Vidic on the half-hour, was another cock-up of epic proportions. Ashley stagnant, Bane chasing and Luiz flailing. Cech, as he had with the opener, had no chance. We spent the rest of the half simply trying to hang on.

We improved after the interval, sure. But, I mean, what good does that exactly do? A marginally good 45 minutes were never going to be enough to defeat Manchester United at Old Trafford. They wanted it. We didn’t. End of.

I’m not even sure who to aim my venom toward at this point. Is it Carlo, who somehow failed to prepare this side for a colossal match once again? Wretched attempts to change a game continue and, on several instances, it seems as if he’s lost not only his edge but also the players’ respect (to a degree). Then there are the players. They deserve a bollocking for this performance. How on earth do you not show up for a game of such magnitude? As we said at the turn of the year, there is something rotten at the club. What it is I have no idea.

My view, a day later

I’m still angry. What we saw Sunday was inexcusable.

But we must take a larger view of the situation. Like I’ve said on numerous occasions, how many of us thought in January we would have been in a position to challenge United? Not many, certainly not me.

Most of us were simply hoping to secure Champions League qualification when we were a hearty 15 points adrift in February. Fifteen points. To claw our way back into the picture from such a deficit says plenty. About Carlo. About our players.

A win on the weekend against Newcastle would all but secure second. Top two after what we’ve been through this season? After a two-plus month lull and a somewhat desperation deadline day? That’s an accomplishment. How we move forward in the summer is the real question. It should prove to be the most pivotal during the Abramovich era.

I don’t even want to think about that shit right now. On to hosting Newcastle then. KTBFFH

Physical, perhaps too much so – even with Rooney’s Oscar worthy turn. Added a half-point for managing to stay on the pitch for a full 90. 5.5John Terry
You can’t fault his commitment. But his mobility seems to reduce with each week. Should have been in a better position for the first goal, even with Bob’s self-induced debacle. 5.5David Luiz
A nightmare. 4Ashley Cole
To be fair to him, Valencia represents a torrid matchup. Still, he was undone far too many times to count. I’ll chalk it up to playing nearly every single minute this season. 4.5John Obi Mikel
Sure, he wasn’t at his best. But, you know, it’s rather difficult having to do the job of three. Unjustly substituted in my mind – this isn’t my Mikel bias talking, either – and likely has had enough. Wouldn’t be surprised if he walked in the offseason. 5.5Michael Essien
My word. This will serve as the centerpiece of a season filled with wretched displays. I’m nearly convinced he’ll never find his way back to an elite level. And now we learn he’s returning to international play? Harsh, I know, but sell while we can. 3Frank Lampard
Not even a goal – scrapped from close range, of course – can mask his anonymity. I can’t even recall seeing him contribute during the opening half. 4.5Salomon Kalou
Wanted a start. Got a start. Proceeded to fumble about. 4.5Florent Malouda
Far too pedestrian on the ball and was rubbish in tracking back. But at least he showed some life when we were on the cusp of being absolutely pummeled. 6Didier Drogba
Meh. His pre-game tone – grins and the like – appeared to suggest a pillaging. Not so much. Never really managed to spark to life, perhaps because we were such shit. 5Ramires
Good energy. What we could have done with his inclusion from the off. 6Alex
Bloody excellent. His goal-line clearance from Rooney was spectacular, much like the rest of his shift. 8Fernando Torres
Minimal impact. Give him the rest of the season off. Some rest and a solid preseason should result in the rebirth (I hope). 5.5

Well. That was a major bummer. Jack is busy putting his burning anger into words for the recap, so here’s the man of the match poll.

Let’s face it. At the beginning of March, none of us could even dream about being in this position. And, even if we had won, we would still need to beat Everton on the last day of the season. So I’m proud that we’ve managed to claw back points so that it got to this point. But maybe that makes it hurt even more that we just did NOT show up today.

I’m giving a mention to Alex because I thought he was fantastic when he came on. And I give credit to Bane for managing to actually stay on the pitch for the full 90.
