Schalke have announced that coach Felix Magath will leave the Bundesliga club with immediate effect.

Magath, 57, had been widely tipped for the exit owing to the team’s disappointing form in the league this season.

A championship-winning coach with Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich, Magath was due to meet with club officials at an extraordinary session of the supervisory board on Wednesday, but chose not to attend.

The club later confirmed that he had been removed from the post, but a replacement is yet to be announced.

“Schalke have very good reasons to part company with Felix Magath,” chairman Clemens Tonnies said.

“We will not communicate these reasons as a legal battle now awaits us. We’re very disappointed about the departure of Felix, but we feel this is the best solution for Schalke.”

Earlier, Magath’s lawyer Ralf Hoecker revealed the reasons behind his client’s refusal to attend the meeting.

“Mr Magath won’t attend Wednesday’s board meeting as he feels participating doesn’t make any sense,” Ralf Hoecker said.

“Mr Magath only received a minimal and incomplete agenda of the meeting on Tuesday. He needs to be well prepared if he is to debate about important subjects.”

Magath, who arrived at the Veltins-Arena in July 2009, guided the team to a second-place finish in his first season in charge, but leaves with the team 10th in the Bundesliga table.

They have reached the final of the DFB Pokal and the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

A Germany international midfielder, Magath spent the majority of his playing career with Hamburg before coaching the club.

He has also taken charge of Nuremburg, Werder Bremen, Frankfurt and Stuttgart.

´Genuine´ Raul wins Magath praise

Schalke boss Felix Magath has praised ‘genuine goalscorer’ Raul after his goal in the first leg of their Champions League tie with Valencia.

Raul’s strike on 64 minutes cancelled out Roberto Soldado’s opener for Valencia at the Mestalla, handing Schalke a 1-1 draw and the advantage ahead of their home leg of the round of 16 tie on March 9.

The goal was Raul’s 69th Champions League goal and his 71st in UEFA competitions, moving him above Filippo Inzaghi as the all-time highest goal-scorer in European competition.

The 33-year-old, who joined Schalke after 16 years at La Liga heavyweights real Madrid, won admiration for his contribution from Magath.

“(His) goal was no fluke,” Magath said.

“That’s a genuine goalscorer we are seeing here. His marker has to come the long way round and Raul knows it; he knows exactly where he’s going to put it.”

“The special thing about him is that he works so much for the team as well. We know we still have a lot of work ahead of us, at home against a team that play with such high intensity, and will prepare accordingly.”

Valencia coach Unai Emery conceded his side ‘suffered against Raul and (strike partner) Klaas-Jan Huntelaar more than we would have liked’.

But he was still confident his side can gain progress to the quarter-finals of the competition.

“It’s not the best result for us but it’s not the worst either,” he said.

“Schalke have taken a slight advantage. They are a good team and we will have to make defensive adjustments in order to be steadier at the back.”

“The objective over there (in Germany) will obviously be to suffer less against a physically powerful side.”

“I’m still convinced of our chances to qualify. We’re going to prepare for the return leg but right now we must concentrate on La Liga and work hard to seal our return to the Champions League next season.”

Milan sign Juventus reject; Magath reveals shock transfer close to fruition

Milan have announced the signing of defender Nicola Legrottaglie on their official website.

The 34-year-old was given permission to leave after Juventus signed Andrea Barzagli as a cover for Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci.

The defender who was mostly used as a fringe player at Juventus has completed his medical at Milan before signing a six-month contract with the Rossoneri.

He has thus become Milan’s fifth signing of the transfer window, albeit a controversial one, after Antonio Cassano, Urby Emanuelson, Mark van Bommel and Didac Villa had arrived at San Siro.

Even if the former Italy international is likely to be used as a back-up player at San Siro, the Rossoneri fans will not be too happy with the signing of Juventus reject.

Magath reveals shock transfer close to fruition

Schalke boss Felix Magath has confirmed the club are set to sign former Bayern midfielder Ali Karimi.

Magath, who coached Karimi at Bayern, believes the Iran international will add much needed creativity to the squad.

“Ali Karimi is on the verge of signing for Schalke. It’s just a matter of wrapping up some formalities,” Magath told Kicker.

“We have some problems to get the ball from midfield to attack at the moment. Karimi could really help us with that.”

Karimi is expected to sign a six-month deal at Veltins Arena subject to passing a medical.

Ali Karimi can be seen as a controversial signing for Schalke seeing that he failed to prove his potential while at Bayern and that he is now 32 years old, but it appears that Felix Magath is ready to take a gamble with him.

Bolton closing in on Chelsea forward

Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge is on the verge of completing a loan deal to Bolton.

The 21-year-old striker has undergone a medical at Reebok Stadium and he is expected to be in the squad to face Wolves on Wednesday.

Despite showing massive potential this season, the young striker hasn’t started a single Premiership game this season, although he did score a couple of goals in the Cup competitions.

With Drogba, Anelka and Kalou in the side, Carlo Ancelotti decided to allow Sturridge to join Bolton in his search for first team football.

Sturridge is expected to provide cover for Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies, although he should get much more playing time than at Chelsea.

This move could benefit all three sides with Sturridge set to gain much needed first team experience at Reebok.
