Ronaldo tips glory year for Real

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo believes the Spanish giants are primed to win plenty of silverware this season.

The Bernabeu outfit are one point clear at the top of La Liga, and have already qualified for the Champions League knockout stages.

Ronaldo will receive the European Golden Shoe on Friday for his 40 goals in La Liga last season and the 26-year-old is delighted to have won the award.

“To win the Golden Shoe is very good, but the important thing is the collective titles,” he told AS.

“Individual titles are also a product of the work of the group.”

“The dressing room is united and ready to fight for all titles. The hardest part lies ahead, but I believe this will be a glorious year and together we will win important things.”

The Portugal international notched his 100th goal for Real Madrid midweek after a little more than two years at the club and had kind words for his colleagues.

“I did not expect to reach the 100-goal mark this season,” he noted. “I would like to thank my team-mates and the coach.”

This Cristiano Ronaldo goal vs Tottenham sealed the European fate of Spurs in the second leg quarterfinal Champions League clash between the two sides at White Hart Lane on April 13, 2011. The Ronaldo goal vs Spurs came because of a howler from Heurelho Gomes, Spurs’ Brazilian keeper.

Gomes made a hash of Ronaldo’s long range effort ( 25 yards out) and try as he did to rectify his error, the ball crossed the line and went in to give Real Madrid a 1-0 lead ( 5-0 on aggregate). The Gomes howler was an important turning point in the game as it put the game beyond Tottenham’s reach

Ronaldo named in Portugal squad

Portugal manager Paulo Bento has included Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo in his squad for upcoming friendlies against Chile and Finland.

Bento, 41, has named the joint-top scorer in the La Liga in a 20-man squad that also includes highly-rated Fabio Coentrao from Benfica.

Defenders Pepe and Ricardo Carvalho – Ronaldo’s teammates at club level – have also been picked. Liga Sagres leaders FC Porto had their dominance recognised, with Rolando, Ruben Micael, Varela and Joao Moutinho included by Bento.

Portugal are second in Group H of Euro 2012 qualifying, with seven points from four matches.

They will face Chile on March 26 and then Finland three days later.

Full squad: Goalkeepers: Eduardo, Rui Patr?cio, Ventura. Defenders: Silvio, Rolando, Bruno Alves, Fabio Coentrao, Joao Pereira Pepe, Ricardo Carvalho. Midfielders: Ruben Micael, Joao Moutinho, Carlos Martins, Miguel Veloso, Paulo Machado, Nani, Ricardo Quaresma. Attackers: Cristiano Ronaldo, Helder Postiga, Danny, Hugo Almeida, Varela.

Ronaldo to miss a fortnight

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo will miss two weeks of football after injuring a hamstring in his side’s 7-0 mauling of Malaga on Thursday.

A Real statement said the 26-year-old had suffered a minor tear in his left hamstring during the game – in which he scored a hat-trick – and would be out for between ’10-15′ days.

“A magnetic resonance done at Sanitas La Moraleja Hospital has determined Cristiano Ronaldo has a Grade I muscle injury on the left biceps femoris muscle,” the statement read.

“The player will miss 10-15 days. His recovery is being monitored.”

Ronaldo left the field moments after scoring his third goal, which lifted him level with Barcelona ace Lionel Messi on 27 goals for the season.

Despite posting a message on his Twitter account claiming he was hopeful of being fit for Real’s next game against Racing Santander on Sunday, Ronaldo later removed the post.

Hands up who thinks that Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo takes a bit too much attention of his appearance? The Portuguese international gives off the aura of a man with extreme narcissistic tendencies and this latest photo of the 26 year old playmaker tells its own story. Clearly we are talking about an individual who’s every move is tracked by hungry hordes of paparazzi, but is that any excuse for looking like a preening idiot?

Let me qualify that statement by saying that in terms of footballing ability the former Man United man is phenomenal, my character assassination is therefore not based on footballing grounds, merely his seemingly self obsessed personality. Main Image courtesy of Kickette.

What are your favourite Ronaldo moments?

The real Ronaldo, the player called O Fenomeno retired a day ago. In a nutmeg, he was brilliant. You could have had three legs and he would have found a way between each of them. He brought immense beauty to the game. Enjoy.

As for the present Brazilian team something tells me their swansong days will be hard to replicate. Making those Ronaldo moments in their 2002 World Cup win priceless. He was lampooned mercilessly for his weight issues in his later days and what transpired before the 1998 World Cup final may never been known. A series of knee injuries and subsequent surgeries kept him out for protracted periods of time. But his day in history is intact. For a generation of football fans, he was the best player. Yours truly included.

Ronaldo set to announce retirement

Three-time World Player of the Year Ronaldo is reportedly set to announce his retirement from professional football on Monday.

The 34-year-old has endured a disappointing campaign with Brazilian club Corinthians and was blamed by supporters for the team’s exit from the Copa Libertadores last week.

Fans have damaged players’ cars and thrown rocks at the team bus, with the violence leading another former Brazil international Roberto Carlos to announce his intention to walk away from the club.

Ronaldo insisted the unrest would not force him to quit, but he has also struggled for fitness this season and is yet to score a goal in 2011.

“It’s time,” Ronaldo was quoted as saying by newspaper Estado de S. Paulo.

“I can’t keep going. I wanted to continue but I can’t. I think about making a play but I can’t execute it.”

Corinthians have scheduled a press conference for Monday, where Ronaldo is expected to publicly confirm his retirement.

Voted the world player of the year in 1996, 1997 and 2002, Ronaldo scored 67 goals in 92 appearances for Brazil and won the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and Korea.

He netted both goals in a 2-0 win over Germany in the final and remains the leading scorer in World Cup history.

Ronaldo also scored an extraordinary 47 goals in 49 games in all competitions for Barcelona in the 1996/97 season, before suffering the first of three serious knee injuries playing for Inter Milan in 1999.

A transfer to Real Madrid brought the only national league titles of his career in 2002/03 and 2006/07, but he never fully recaptured the devastating combination of pace, strength and skill that earned him the nickname ‘the phenomenon’ earlier in his career.
