SPL: Kilmarnock 0 Celtic 2

Celtic moved to within a point of first-placed Rangers in the Scottish Premier League after a hard-fought 2-0 win over Kilmarnock on Sunday.

It took Neil Lennon’s side until the end of the first half to finally break the deadlock through Scott Brown and winger Kris Commons guaranteed the points in the 68th minute, keeping the pressure on Rangers with two games remaining.

Both sides had early chances but it was Celtic who found the net after 19 minutes when striker Gary Hooper nodded in from close range, only for his goal to be disallowed for offside.

It was one of two times the Hoops were denied by the assistant referee in the first half after the flag was again raised when Commons poked home later.

But Brown eventually gave Celtic a deserved lead on the stroke of half time when he headed home after teenage midfielder James Forrest had squared a cross from Irishman Daryl Murphy with a header of his own.

Commons doubled their advantage in brilliant fashion midway through the second half, controlling a pass from Brown before unleashing an unstoppable 25-yard drive into the top corner.

Celtic finish the league season with a home game against Hearts and a trip to Motherwell, while Rangers host Dundee United and travel to Kilmarnock.

Kilmarnock can finish as low as sixth if Motherwell can recover a three-point deficit in the last two games of the season.

Celtic remain in the hunt for a domestic double after thrashing 10-man Aberdeen 4-0 in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup on Sunday.

Aberdeen had looked the livelier of the two sides from the opening whistle, but their momentum was shattered by a red card to Andrew Considine in the 18th minute.

The Dons defender tripped up Gary Hooper as he stole into the area on Scott Brown’s pass, earning himself a dismissal at Pittodrie for the second successive time against Celtic.

Anthony Stokes took the penalty kick but failed to beat goalkeeper Jamie Langfield, though it mattered little to the end result as an unbalanced Aberdeen came unstuck in the second half.

Former Dons defedner Charlie Mulgrew started the rot with an expertly taken free kick four minutes from the restart, unleashing a skidding drive that skipped through the wall and past a diving Langfield.

Aberdeen had a goal ruled out for offside eight minutes later, and within seconds Celtic were up the other end extending their lead through Wales midfielder Joe Ledley, who turned Stokes’ cross past Langfield from inside the box.

Stokes was again involved six minutes later, cut down on the run by Derek Young for a second penalty that was taken and converted by Kris Commons.

And there was still time for one more as substitute attacker Shaun Maloney, brought on for Ledley in the 70th minute, had the simple task of finishing off another whipped-in cross by captain Scott Brown six minutes from injury-time.

Celtic, who are one point behind leaders Rangers on the Scottish Premier League table, can wrap up the second leg of a potential domestic double when they take on Motherwell in the final on May 21.

Motherwell defeated St Johnstone 3-0 in Saturday’s semi-final.

Just when it looked like the hosts at McDiarmid Park would make it to the break on level terms, Kayal got on the end of some scrappy play to place home what proved to be the winner.

St. Johnstone finished the clash with 10 men when 51st minute substitute Chris Millar limped off with an injury after his side had exhausted their three substitutions.

Manchester United is keeping tabs on Celtic defender Emilio Izaguirre, according to The Mirror.

Sir Alex Ferguson watched the Honduran defender in action against Rangers yesterday after receiving impressive reports from Manchester United scouts.

Ferguson is short on cover at left-back and he could make a move for the 24-year-old in the summer.

Since Patrice Evra is likely to leave the club unless he signs a new deal before the summer, Ferguson doesn’t want to leave anything to chance and he is looking to bring another full-back to Old Trafford.

Even though Izaguirre has only joined Celtic last summer, it is highly unlikely they would be able to resist a big money offer from Manchester United.

Celtic star rules out Brescia move

Celtic midfielder Efrain Juarez insists he is not close to joining Italian side Brescia on loan.

The 22-year-old has been strongly linked with a loan move away from the Hoops this month.

“I was very surprised to hear this rumour. I went to train, then I had a sleep in the afternoon. When I woke up, my phone was ringing like crazy,” he told the Daily Record.

“Even my dad phoned to ask what was happening about Brescia.

“I am absolutely not aware of any transfer to Italy. I remain at Celtic. ”

Juarez signed a four-year contract with Celtic when he joined the club last summer.
