MLS wrap: Galaxy, Red Bulls share points

Stars Thierry Henry and Landon Donovan both scored as the Los Angeles Galaxy drew 1-1 with the New York Red Bulls in Saturday’s MLS action.

In a match between the top sides from the Eastern and Western Conferences, New York drew first blood when Henry found the back of the net after five minutes.

The goal stunned the home fans at the Home Depot Center and was a typically stylish finish from Henry, but his side’s lead did not even last the half as LA responded five minutes before the break through Donovan.

There were no more goals in an exciting match that keeps both sides on top of the table in their respective conferences.

Struggling Toronto claimed a 2-1 home win against Houston Dynamo, with all three goals coming in the second half.

Joao Jimmy Plata’s 49th-minute penalty put the Canadians in front and substitute Maicon Santos looked to have wrapped up the points when he scored with nine minutes to play, just four minutes after coming off the bench.

But there was to be a late sub-plot as Jamaican Lovel Palmer pulled a goal back for Houston after 87 minutes, ensuring there was to be a nervy finale for the hosts.

In other matches, Emilio Renteria’s second-half penalty rescued a point for Columbus Crew in a 1-1 draw with the Seattle Sounders while the Chicago Fire and the Vancouver Whitecaps played out a goalless draw.

There were two other 0-0 draws on Saturday, with both the New England Revolution and the Colorado Rapids and DC United and Dallas failing to find the back of the net.

Real Salt Lake beat Chivas USA 1-0 with Will Johnson scoring three minutes from time.

MLS: FC Dallas 2 LA Galaxy 1

An 89th-minute Brek Shea goal has handed FC Dallas a 2-1 win over LA Galaxy in their rain-soaked MLS encounter.

LA Galaxy, who named David Beckham in the line-up despite his attendance of the royal nuptials back in his native England, welcomed back former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel to the starting eleven.

The home side had to be content without star midfielder David Ferreira, who is out with a broken ankle.

Fellow Colombian Fabian Castillo opened the scoring for Dallas two minutes after half-time, sumptuously looping the ball over Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts for his maiden MLS goal.

Castillo celebrated by paying tribute to team-mate Ferreira, who broke his ankle against the Vancouver Whitecaps last Saturday.

After scoring, Castillo held up a shirt with the name of his compatriot, recipient of last season’s MLS Most Valuable Player award.

But it only took four minutes for the Galaxy draw level, through captain Landon Donovan’s sliding poacher’s effort from close range.

Heavy rain and lightning forced the game into an hour-long impasse in the 83rd minute, which resulted in a mass departure of supporters from Pizza Hut Park.

Dallas, however, were not to be denied when play resumed, as Brek Shea floated a cross-cum-shot over Ricketts from the edge of the box to send his side into fifth.

Dallas will now head to the capital to face DC United on Saturday, while the Galaxy welcome New York Red Bull on Saturday.

David Beckham was suspended but the Los Angeles Galaxy scored a valuable 2-1 away win at the Chicago Fire in Sunday’s MLS action.

Bruce Arena’s side were also without Landon Donovan, while Juan Pablo

Angel was left on the bench, leaving LA short of their usual star

firepower.

But the Galaxy dealt with the absence of their key men well, with Chad Barrett opening the scoring after 42 minutes.

LA looked to have sealed the points 18 minutes from time when Omar

Gonzalez added his name to the scoresheet but they did receive a late

scare, when substitute Dominic Oduro scored for the hosts with just a

minute remaining.

But it was just a false alarm as the Galaxy held on for a win that puts

them second on goal difference in the Western Conference behind Real

Salt Lake, while Chicago remain at the foot of the Eastern Conference.

The Portland Timbers held off a fast-finishing FC Dallas for a 3-2 victory at PGE Park.

The Timbers, who won 4-2 at home against the Chicago Fire on Thursday,

again started the match full of goals, with Jack Jewsbury’s 13th minute

opener delighting another passionate crowd in Portland.

Kenny Cooper added a second with 10 minutes in the first half remaining

and Rodney Wallace looked to have put the result beyond doubt with his

56th minute goal.

But Dallas refused to lie down, and an 83rd minute goal from David

Ferreira was followed by Brek Shea’s strike four minutes from time to

give the visitors the late momentum.

Portland did hold on for the win, however, which saw them rise to fourth in the Western Conference.

The other match of the day saw Houston Dynamo snatch a late 1-0 win

against New England, thanks to Hunter Freeman’s goal with just four

minutes remaining.

Juninho, who scored the only goal in Los Angeles’ season-opening win over the Seattle Sounders on Tuesday, had a goal disallowed in the 17th minute after being fouled for goalkeeper interference against Revs custodian Matt Reis.

But the Brazilian would have the last laugh, blasting into the net from 20 yards out after a botched clearance by AJ Soares.

Juninho has already matched his goal tally from his debut season last year, in which the midfielder managed just two goals in 25 games.

The introduction of Angel and Paolo Cardozo threatened to turn the game in the Galaxy’s favour in the second half, but the rain and wind increased as time wore on and made chances scarce for both sides.

LA Galaxy would not allow David Beckham to play at White Hart Lane because the Americans wanted him to play a full season in the USA.

FC Dallas stun LA Galaxy, 3-0

In case you missed this. FC Dallas are going to their first MLS final after shocking the pre-abortive favourites LA Galaxy.

This defeat was not because the big names in the Galaxy did not show up to play - in fact David Beckham, Landon Donovan, and Juninho were outstanding. They were undone by a superb Dallas performance.

Kevin Hartman was an absolute rock in goal bringing of spectacular save after save. Up front the pace of Atiba Harris, Marvin Chavez, and MVP candidate David Ferreira proved too much for the Galaxy defense. The trio combined for the first and the last goal with Ferreira and Chavez getting on the board. The second was created by Brek Shea and finished by George John, Dallas's central defender, scoring his first ever MLS goal.

A well deserved victory and now Dallas meet the Colorado Rapids in the MLS final on November 21st.
