Jordan Henderson Scores a Cracker During England Under 21 Training Session (Video)

no comments by Mad Dog and Glory on March 23rd, 2011

The Sunderland midfielder was probably unlucky to have not been picked for the senior set up for the upcoming matches with Wales and Ghana but during training with the England Under 21 side the Black Cat scored a cracker which you can see around 1.30 into the video below.

Gennaro Gattuso Headbutts Tottenham Coach Joe Jordan (Video)

25 comments by Mad Dog and Glory on February 16th, 2011

AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso appeared to be in the mood for a scrap the moment the referee blew the first whistle, and that is all well and good, but there is no justification for the Italian international to attack the Tottenham assistant. We are talking about a 59 year old, who to be fair would probably take Gattuso apart any day of the week.

Asian Cup: Jordan 1 Uzbekistan 2

Uzbekistan advanced to the semi-finals of the Asian Cup for the first time with a 2-1 win over Jordan in Doha on Friday.

Both teams were aiming for their maiden semi-final berth at Asia’s premier soccer tournament and two goals in the space of three second-half minutes from Ulugbek Bakayev ensured his team will face either Australia or Iraq in the last four.

Jordan pulled one back through captain Bashar Bani Yaseen, but could not find an equaliser amid a frantic finale with plenty of goalscoring opportunities.

Uzbekistan coach Vadim Abramov made five changes to the side which drew 2-2 with China on Sunday, opting for a more defensive line-up, but after an uninspiring opening, it was Uzbekistan who created the first chance.

On 22 minutes, Aleksandr Geynrikh, who scored a sensational long-range goal against China, forced an acrobatic save from Amer Shafee in the Jordan goal with another thunderous strike from distance.

Four minutes later it was Jordan’s turn to attack when Ahmed Abdelhalim launched a left-footed free-kick toward goal that almost caught out Uzbekistan goalkeeper Ignatiy Nesterov, but he was equal to the challenge and clattered into the post to make a crucial stop.

Moments later Hassan Abdel Fattah flashed a crisp volley just wide of the upright as Jordan began to enjoy the better of the play.

Uzbekistan could have taken the lead on the stroke of half-time when a great cross from Sanzhar Tursunov picked out Geynrikh in the box but the striker’s shot was well saved by Shafee.

Uzbekistan emerged a new team after the break, and took the lead immediately after the restart when a fine in-swinging free-kick from Server Djeparov found Bakayev who glanced a header past Shafee.

Two minutes later it was 2-0, when Jasur Hasanov fired an excellent cross to Bakayev and the striker’s first-time shot gave Sahfee no chance.

Jordan pulled a goal back after 58 minutes when a Shadi Abu Hashhash header forced a fine save from Nesterov, but Bashar was on hand to slot home the rebound.

Uzbekistan goalkeeper Nesterov was substituted on the hour mark, replaced by Temur Juraev, after failing to recover from his collision with the post in the first-half.

The new gloveman was forced to make a great save almost immediately when Abdelhalim lashed a fierce left foot drive toward goal, but Juraev averted the danger.

Geynrikh was forced off with what appeared to be a knee injury on 68 minutes as Jordan continued to pile on the pressure.

But with more emphasis on attack, Jordan were left exposed at the back and Uzbekistan could have made sure of the result with eight minutes to play when Tursunov found himself clean through, but the winger could only fire his shot wide.

Asian Cup: Jordan 2 Syria 1

Jordan booked a place in the Asian Cup quarter-finals with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Syria in Doha on Monday.

With Syria needing a victory to progress to the knockout stage, they made the perfect start when Mohamed Al Zeno put them ahead but an own goal to Ali Diab levelled proceedings at half-time before Odai Al Saifi’s second-half strike sent Jordan into the last eight.

Jordan boss Adnan Hamad was happy with the side that beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 last time out, making no changes while Syria manager Valeriu Tia called upon Sanharib Malki to replace the suspended Nadim Sabagh.

The match began at a frenetic pace with Syria on top in the early stages and regularly testing Jordan goalkeeper Amer Sabah, and their early dominance paid off when Al Zeno gave them the lead after 15 minutes.

Malki made a promising run down the right side of the pitch and after getting close to the by-line, shot at Sabah, who could only parry the strike.

The rebound fell invitingly for Al Zeno who was on hand to tap the ball in and give Syria the early edge.

Syria had opportunities to go further in front but Al Zeno and Jehad Al Hussain missed free headers from inside the penalty box while Feras Esmaeel fired wide.

Almost completely against the run of play, Jordan found an equaliser.

Syria goalkeeper Mosab Balhous decided to come for a cross from the left but could not get through a crowd of bodies, with the ball finding the head of Diab who could only manage to put the ball in the back of the net.

The goal highlighted the lack of communication between the Syrian defence and goalkeeper and it was something Jordan would make the most of later in the match.

Referee Abdulrahman Mohammed dished out several yellow cards in the early stages of the second half including one to Balhous, who charged out of his box to clatter Hassan Abdel Fattah.

But Syria continued to attack and could have taken the lead if it were not for a smart save by Sabah who tipped Belal Abduldaim’s free-kick and from the resultant corner Sabah had to react well to save a left-foot rocket from Samer Awad.

Syria piled on the pressure in search of a goal, but Malki and Esmaeel wasted headers before once again a long ball split the Syrian defence open.

Al Saifi slipped in behind the defensive line and despite the best efforts of Diab, who tried to shield the ball from the Jordan man, he tapped home the all-important second goal.

It was a clever finish from Al Saifi who hooked the ball over the oncoming keeper but the defending was comical and the goal allowed Jordan, who only needed a point to progress, to sit back and defend their lead.

Jordan’s victory sets up an exciting quarter-final clash with Group A winners Uzbekistan.

Lofty goals for Jordan

Jordan star Amer Deeb conceded it would be a big achievement for his side to progress beyond the group stages of the 2011 Asian Cup in Qatar.

Deeb, 30, was part of the first Jordan team to qualify for an Asian Cup back in 2004 – a side which made it to the quarter-finals before a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out loss to Japan.

And Deeb believes progression from Group B, where they are drawn alongside three-time champions Japan and Saudi Arabia as well as Syria, would be an achievement on a par with 2004.

“We need to focus on our main aim, which is to qualify from the group,” Deeb told fifa.com.

“If we manage that, it will be considered a success equal to what we achieved in 2004.”

“Perhaps we can even better it, but our group has both Japan and Saudi Arabia in it and they are both very experienced in this tournament and past winners.”

“Our team is a mixed bag. We have experienced players who played in China, plus several of the young players who appeared at the 2007 FIFA Under-20 World Cup and have broken into the first team since.”

“Playing at the Asian Cup is everyone’s dream. We worked hard to qualify and we don’t intend to let this opportunity slip away.”
