Arsene Wenger: Nicklas Bendtner Will Stay At Arsenal

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is confident striker Nicklas Bendtner will remain at the club after they discuss a new contract in the summer.

The 23-year-old has endured a frustrating season following the fine form of Robin van Persie and the arrival of Marouane Chamakh.

The Denmark international has only started three Premier League games this season but has scored 10 goals in 34 appearances.

His lack of first-team opportunities has disappointed the Dane, alerting clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.

Wenger understands Bendtner’s frustrations and the pair will sit down in the summer to discuss his future.

Heat of the moment stuff and probably quite understandable given the crazy nature of the last three minutes of today’s encounter. Arsene Wenger felt that his side were hard done by as they conceded a penalty in the 98th minute of the match, a penalty that was seemingly warranted and as a result Kenny Dalglish appeared to not take the Arsenal manager’s anger too well, telling the Frenchman to ‘piss off’.

Arsenal are reportedly eyeing up FC Porto manager Andre Villas Boas as a future replacement for Arsene Wenger. The 33 year old Portuguese boss has guided his side to the domestic title in his first season and has done so without losing a game whilst also gone 12 games unbeaten to take his side to the Quarter Finals of the Europa League.

Often likened to former Porto boss Jose Mourinho, Boas has worked as the Real Madrid manager’s assistant at both Chelsea and Inter Milan but has begun to earn a name for himself as a up and coming manager with a great deal of potential.

Though Arsenal have no concrete plans to replace Wenger it appears that the club’s board have been monitoring Boas’s progress and may well look to bring the young manager in to replace their mercurial Frenchman. The current Gunners boss has been in his post for almost 15 years but has experienced something of a sticky patch of late.

If the Emirates outfit fail to secure a Premier League title this term it would result in six seasons without silverware and the club’s support, though loyal to Wenger, may start to waiver after such a prolonged period without tangible success.

Boas is known for his insistence that his players play a cultured style of football and could therefore be the type of manager the North London side turns too when the time is right.

Disaster for Wenger as old enemy sees them off again

I am really sorry to write about Arsenal again, but I have little choice.

I have never been Arsene Wenger’s biggest fan, but I do admire the way he sticks to his guns, the way he tries to get his team to play and the way he has revolutionised much about the game in England. I have never liked his blinkered views about the misdeeds of his own players and his condemnation of the misdeeds of others. Despite that, my heart goes out to the man this morning.

Believed

Two weeks ago today he truly believed that Arsenal had every chance of winning four trophies and sealing a place in history for the team and for himself. A growing number of people were also beginning to believe that it could be possible.

First up, two weeks ago, came Birmingham in the Carling Cup final. His team failed to rise to the occasion and they were out thought and out fought in a 2-1 defeat. It was a major blow, but it was only the most minor of the four trophies and there were still three more.

Dismal

Next, they faced a home game against Sunderland in the Premier League in which victory would give them pole position for the run-in. Unfortunately, once again the team failed to rise to the occasion and played out a dismal 0-0 that left the title in Manchester United’s own hands.

After that it was Barcelona in the Champions League to defend the 2-1 lead from the first leg. There are vastly contrasting views on what happened in the Camp Nou, but suffice to say Arsenal hardly touched the ball, didn’t have a shot and lost the game 3-1. Saying goodbye to the second of the original four trophies.

Confidence

Yesterday Arsenal went to Old Trafford in the FA Cup quarter-final, desperate for a result to regain some confidence and to stay in the competition that saw their best remaining chance of winning something for the first time in five years.

What actually happened, of course, is that United scored a goal in each half in a 2-0 win that turned a promising season even further towards becoming a disaster for Wenger and his men. Goodbye to trophy number three.

Devastating

Rarely can any team have been knocked out of three tournaments in two weeks. The devastating psychological effect of these fourteen days are likely to mean that Arsenal’s title hopes will fade and the season will peter out. To avoid that happening, Wenger faces the toughest test he has ever faced as a manager.

Added to the insult of defeat was the injury to Johan Djourou, who has become Arsenal’s best defender. He will miss the rest of the season and Arsenal’s already suspect defence will now hold no fear for Premier League strikers.

Rumblings

Listening to radio phone-ins and looking at the various fans forums, it seemed that some Arsenal fans were beginning to turn against Arsene Wenger even before yesterday’s defeat. That is unlikely to ease off now. There was some rumblings about the manager last season but when he said in the Summer that this season was when his side needed to win something, the fans got behind him.

For many months it looked as though silverware would be heading to the Emirates for the first time. Now, that is looking highly unlikely. The Premier League title is still within their grasp, but it would show the type of mental strength and resilience that I am not 100% sure they possess, to bounce back and beat yesterday’s opponents to the trophy. If they haven’t got it, will the fans accept another year like this?

Arsene Wenger deserves to be remembered as a great manager of Arsenal but I fear he may be in his last season and will be remembered for failing to win anything in his last six years. That would be a shame, but if he had listened to everyone else and spent some money on a keeper and a centre-back, he probably wouldn’t be in this position. I’m afraid it really is his own fault.

Happy Birthday, Arsene Wenger; Looking Ahead to Manchester City

Not too much going on today ahead of this weekend’s clash with Manchester City:

First off, though, happy birthday to le boss, who turns 61 today. I would say I hope he has a good birthday, but knowing what an obsessive he is, I expect he’ll be watching old UEFA Cup match tapes. I previously wrote about what Wenger means to the club, and to me as a fan of the club, here, so check that out if you want a more in-depth tribute.

It is pretty amazing how Wenger and Ferguson are still kicking around, though. Wenger’s been at Arsenal for over 14 years, now. Fergie has been at United a staggering 24 years. Beyond those two, and David Moyes, who’s been at Everton for 8 seasons, it’s pretty shocking how Premiership managers just don’t seem to stick around that long:

Aston Villa – Houllier (1st season)
Birmingham – McLeish (4th season)
Blackburn – Allardyce (3rd season)
Blackpool – Holloway (2nd season)
Bolton – Coyle (2nd season)
Chelsea – Ancelotti (2nd season)
Fulham – Hughes (1st season)
Liverpool – Hodgson (1st season)
Manchester City – Mancini (2nd season)
Newcastle – Hughton (2nd season)
Stoke – Pulis (5th season)
Sunderland – Bruce (2nd season)
Tottenham – Redknapp (3rd season)
WBA – Di Matteo (2nd season)
West Ham – Grant (1st season)
Wigan – Martinez (2nd season)
Wolves – McCarthy (5th season)

So if you’re looking for a stable, long-term job, football manager isn’t your game, eh? Fully 60% of the Premiership managers are either in their first or second years with their current clubs, and only 25% of managers have spent more than 4 years with their current clubs — Ferguson, Wenger, Moyes, Pulis, and McCarthy. There’s an old debate about whether Arsenal and Manchester United have been so successful because they stuck with their managers and have that vision and stability, or whether they simply found great managers that were worth sticking with. I tend to think it’s a combination of the two — having the support and backing of the front office and fan base does allow them to implement their vision of what the football team should be, and also makes them more attractive to potential players, who associate them with that club, respect them, and want to play for them. That having been said, there’s no point in sticking with a terrible manager for the long-term, so they have earned it by being excellent managers. But it does put into perspective just how remarkable such a long tenure at one club at such a high level really is. Happy Birthday, boss.

Wenger also spoke at the AGM and said that he expects Cesc to stay at the club for many years to come. Oh lord, not this again. Look, it’s all well and good, and I hope he’s right. But until I hear it from Cesc himself, it doesn’t mean that much to me — and Cesc’s recent comments about how he was interested in leaving for Barca but was convinced to stay by Wenger, he didn’t mention anything about staying at Arsenal for the long term. I still think he wants to leave for Barca, and I think there’s a pretty good chance it happens this summer.

But you know what? I don’t care about that right now. We’ll deal with that tedious nightmare again next summer when it pops up. Right now, I just want to beat Manchester City, and don’t really care about comments about Cesc’s future.

Speaking of the rudder, apparently they’ve done some sort of tv special that’s set to air in the next couple of days that’s basically “A Day in the Life of Cesc Fabregas,” where they follow him around for a day. Here’s the trailer (in Spanish):

I don’t understand any of it, but it’s neat to see him at home and in the gym, etc., and supposedly he talks about how much he likes living in London.

This weekend, of course, we travel to the Eastlands to take on Manchester City. It’s a place that has not been kind to us in past seasons, as we’ve taken several lashings there. We seem to have a lot of problems with them, tactically, and for whatever reason have really struggled there (I would say over the past couple of seasons our performances there have been worse than anywhere else, including Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford). We’ll see if we can turn it around on Sunday.

Our old friend Emmanuel Adebayor scored a hat trick for Manchester City in the Europa League yesterday, and Mancini has announced that Adebayor could be in the starting XI against us on Sunday. Not all that surprising, given that he does seem to have a chip on his shoulder against Arsenal and we seem to bring out the best in him. Hopefully we’ll see the worst of him, though — 7-10 offside calls, sloppy giveaways, etc.

Maybe he and Arshavin can actually have a “jog off” — whoever covers the least ground or spends the least time running gets the prize (a lovely gold-plated sleeping turtle). Bonus points are awarded for: (a) more than 10 consecutive seconds spent walking during open play; (b) throwing their hands up or shrugging in exasperation at one of their teammates who has been busting his ass all game for failing to deliver them an inch-perfect pass because they couldn’t be bothered to actually get open; and (c) opting to take an off-balance shot from a poor angle far away from the goal which goes a good 10-15 yards high or wide instead of passing to a wide open teammate in a better position. Honestly, I wouldn’t know who to favor in this competition, they’re neck in neck. But it should be exciting. Kind of. In a way.

That’s it for me — I’m moving this weekend so I won’t be around. It’s just as well given how pessimistic I am about this one, and I generally find the Manchester City matches amongst the least exciting we play all season. I will be able to watch the match, though, so I’ll probably drop in on Sunday and bless you with my thoughts. Have great weekends.
