Trapattoni keen to extend Irish role

Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni wants to stay in his post through to the 2014 World Cup.

A 4-0 win over Estonia in the first leg of their qualifying tie for Euro 2012 has seen the Irish put themselves within touching distance of their first major tournament since the 2002 World Cup.

Trapattoni insisted that they now have a foundation of young players to build towards further successes and that he would like to be a part of it.

“We can repeat our performance in qualification towards the World Cup in Brazil,” he told BBC Sport.

“Now we have a strong, young team. I would be disappointed or upset if I had to leave.”

“When we change these senior players, I am sure we have options who are very, very strong.”

The 72-year-old also praised the work of his squad, admitting that although they are not the most talented outfit, they are a balanced team.

“Our team is a good team. We play good football,” he said.

“Maybe we do not have super-creative players, but we have very, very good players, modern players, quick players and a balance between defenders and attackers.”

La Liga wrap: Barca extend lead after Real slip

Barcelona beat Villarreal on Saturday to open up an eight-point lead in La Liga after Real Madrid lost 1-0 at home to Sporting Gijon.

A 79th-minute goal from Miguel de las Cuevas helped Sporting register an unlikely upset over second-placed Real at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Shorn of key men Cristiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso and Karim Benzema, the hosts were reduced to a handful of half-chances from Germany playmaker Mesut Ozil and Argentina forward Angel Di Maria.

Striker Gonzalo Higuain nearly scored after coming off the bench in his first appearance following a four-month absence through injury.

But it was left to former Atletico Madrid man de las Cuevas to snatch a late winner for Sporting and deal a major blow to Real’s title ambitions.

It was Real coach Jose Mourinho’s first league defeat in charge of a home team for just over nine years and also the capital city club’s first home defeat of the season in any competiton.

Defending champions Barca duly took advantage, despite being made to work by Villarreal.

They eventually edged a tight encounter in the Estadio El Madrigal 1-0, courtesy of Gerard Pique’s 66th-minute strike.

With Lionel Messi starting on the bench under an injury cloud, the visitors struggled to breakdown Villarreal, who went close on several occasions through Italy striker Giuseppe Rossi.

Xavi Hernandez had an effort tipped over the bar in one of Barca’s few clear-cut chances, before Messi was introduced on 52 minutes.

But it was Brazilian Dani Alves rather than Argentine superstar Messi who finally crafted the breakthrough.

Finding space on the right, Alves sent in a cross that glanced off the head of Sergio Busquets before finding its way to Pique.

The Spain international defender used his chest to cushion the ball down and then smacked a volley past Villarreal goalkeeper Diego Lopez from close range.

The win puts Pep Guardiola’s side firmly in control of the title race and – with eight matches left in the season – on course for their third consecutive championship crown.

Elsewhere, four goals from striker Roberto Soldado helped Valencia come from a goal down to beat Getafe 4-2 away from home.

The win keeps Valencia third, a distant 16 points behind Real and 24 back from Barca.

Barcelona moved 10 points clear of Real Madrid in La Liga with an uncharacteristically staid 1-0 win over Real Zaragoza on Saturday.

Seydou Keita was the unlikely hero at the Camp Nou, notching just his second goal of the season two minutes from half-time to secure Barca’s fourth straight league victory.

Barca was lacklustre in the first half before Lionel Messi sparked the Spanish champions into action, sweeping a cross to Keita at the far post for the Malian defender to tuck past Zaragoza goalkeeper Dolbas.

It was just reward for Keita, who had earlier had a goal controversially disallowed for offside.

Pep Guardiola was a less animated figure than usual on the touchline, the Barca boss still suffering from a back injury that necessitated his hospitalisation on Thursday.

Real Madrid will have a chance to reduce the gap to seven points when they take on Racing Santander on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Villarreal’s top-three hopes suffered a blow with a 3-1 loss at Atletico Madrid.

Jose Antonio Reyes put Atletico in front five minutes in with a fine curling effort from 20 yards out, but Giuseppe Rossi drew Villarreal level with a left-footed redirection of Santi Cazorla’s free kick after 33 minutes.

But Atletico responded after the break with quick goals to Sergio Aguero (69) and Diego Forlan (72), the former played in to the area by Filipe Luis for an easy finish and the latter converting from close range on Reyes’ good work.

Finally, Pablo Hernandez scored in either half as Valencia ran out 2-1 winners at Mallorca, leaving the visitors well placed to clinch third spot behind Barca and Real.

La Liga preview: Barca aim to extend record run

Barcelona will travel to Sporting Gijon on Saturday hoping to extend their record-breaking La Liga winning streak to 17 matches.

On Sunday, Barca broke the La Liga record for wins in succession when they eclipsed the great Real Madrid team of 1960-1961 with a 3-0 triumph over Atletico Medrid thanks to a hat-trick from the prolific Lionel Messi.

The club has also recently been lifted with news that manager Pep Guardiola is set to renew his contract for another year.

Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta said that Guardiola would renew on February 22 and that he had always wanted to stay.

“We knew that Pep wanted to stay, because he’s always said that. We are aware of his value as a coach and what he brings to us as a club,” Zubizarreta told the club’s official website.

Guardiola’s new deal will please Spanish striker David Villa, formerly of Sporting Gijon, who recently told the English press he believes their success is down to the ‘harmony’ in the dressing room.

But Sporting Gijon will not lie down for their more-fancied opponents and have been much-improved after a dreadful run through October, November and December.

After a goodt start to the season, Sporting won only one of 18 matches before a fight-back saw them go unbeaten in four, including three wins, but they were beaten last time out by Athletic Bilbao 3-0.

With the La Liga so competitive this year, despite sitting in 13th, Sporting Gijon could drop as low as second last if they lose and the significance of the fixture will not be lost on Manuel Preciardo’s side.

In the other Saturday fixture, Atletico Madrid host Valencia in a battle of two top-half sides at the Vicente Calderon.

Atletico, sitting eighth, are now 14 points behind fourth-placed Valencia and must win to keep any dreams of Champions League qualification alive.

After winning the Europa League and the European Super Cup within four months, Atletico have faded this season and have not been able to rely on the goals of Uruguayan Diego Forlan, who has struggled.

If Atletico are underachieving, Valencia are overachieving, with the Mestalla outfit having lost just one of their last 11 matches in all competitions, despite the club’s debt problems which were eased by the sale of Villa.

On Sunday, Real Madrid, seven points behind Barcelona, travel to Espanyol in a potentially tricky encounter.

There are signs Real’s attack is slowly improving, with Manchester City loanee Emmanuel Adebayor starting to find his feet at the club, netting his second goal for the Spanish giants in their 4-1 win at home to Real Sociedad last week.

A win is vital to keep the pressure on Barcelona and any failure to pick up three points will increase the pressure on Real boss Jose Mourinho.

In other fixtures, under-achieving Sevilla travel to Racing Santander while third-placed Villarreal are also on the road and will face Deportivo La Coruna.

Strugglers Levante and Almeria will battle while bottom-club Malaga, buoyed by gaining a point against Sevilla, host Getafe.

Real Sociedad will clash with Osasuna while Monday’s match pits Mallorca against the in-form Athletic Bilbao, who have not lost in the league since December.

Barcelona extended their lead over Real Madrid at the top of La Liga to five points with a 4-0 rout at Deportivo La Coruna.

Goals to David Villa, Lionel Messi, Andreas Iniesta and Pedro ensured the Catalans romped home after a lacklustre start at the Riazor.

Villa broke the deadlock in the 26th minute; his shot somehow making it through the legs of Deportivo goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubia after he was played through by Messi.

Messi was at it again seven minutes into the second half, this time doing it on his own as he scored his 18th league goal of the season with a curling free kick.

Iniesta added another for good measure with a lovely placed shot on 80 minutes before the effervescent Pedro benefited from the service of Messi yet again with a crafty chipped finish just a minute later to seal the win.

The victory piles the pressure back on to chasing Real Madrid who host Villarreal on Sunday.

In other matches, a Freddie Kanoute brace inspired Sevilla to twice come from behind to defeat Real Sociedad 3-2.

Sociedad took the lead through Diego Rivas before Kanoute drew level almost immediately.

The lead was only brief as the home side regained their one-goal cushion just before half-time through Joseba Llorente.

Sevilla coach Gregorio Manzano introduced Alvaro Negredo and it proved to be a game-changing substitution as he set up Luis Fabiano to equalise, before providing for Kanoute’s second goal which ultimately proved to be the winner.

Athletic Bilbao rescued a point with a dramatic 1-1 draw at Malaga in Saturday’s other match.

Javi Martinez broke Malaga hearts with a header deep into stoppage time after new signing Martin Demichelis had put the hosts ahead with just 10 minutes remaining.

Spurs extend festive cheer

In this country, cards are traditionally received before Christmas Day, but at Tottenham it seems as though the season of good will extends beyond that December deadline.

Kaboul was the second player in consecutive games to receive a card of the red variety from a referee (unfortunately they don’t come with any pretty pictures of Santa Claus on them). It meant that Spurs were once again forced to achieve victory with a numerical disadvantage.

Kaboul, like Defoe on Sunday, moved himself up the queue for the bath when he was dismissed half way through the second half. Like Defoe against Villa, Kaboul could feel perhaps a little hard done by, but he only has his own immaturity to blame for his early departure.

The game started with an edge from the opening few minutes as challenges flew in from both sides. With the likes of Joey barton and Alan Smith on the pitch, little else could have been expected. Both sides were guilty of some reckless challenges but it was Kaboul that was issued the ultimate punishment, half way through the second half.

Tangling with Cheick Tiote on the half way line, Kaboul squared up to the Newcastle player and after exchanging some words not common place at this time of year, Kaboul angled his head towards Tiote, caught him and was sent off. The contact was minimal but the intent was evidence enough for referee Anthony Taylor. This moment of madness was sandwiched in the game by two pieces of brilliance, conjured up on both of the spurs flanks.

Fifty Seven minutes of the game had passed with very little goalmouth action to speak of until Younes Kaboul sprayed the ball wide to Aaaron Lennon, the Spurs winger advanced at pace towards the Newcastle defence as they backed away in fear. As Lennon reached the edge of the area he shifted the ball onto his favoured right foot creating the angle to drive an unstoppable shot across Tim Krul and into the far bottom corner of the net.

With Spurs leading it meant Newcastle were forced onto the offensive and had to abandon their defensive approach to the game. Then came the sending off of Kaboul, this merely served to enhance the already growing confidence in the Newcastle players. Yet spurs are always dangerous on the break, and if Alan Pardew had watched the Spurs game against Villa, he certainly didn’t warn his own players of the counter attacking capabilities of their opponents.

On Eighty minutes Carrol was dispossessed on the edge of the box, Modric broke quickly, his pass finding Bale out on the left flank, as he advanced toward the Newcastle penalty area there was a sense in the crowd that a second goal was in the offing. Bale did not disappoint, gliding into the area he turned Steven Taylor inside out and smashed the ball between two defenders, across the keeper and in off the far post, a wonderful goal from the Spurs winger.

For the final ten minutes Spurs controlled the pattern of the game despite being a man light. Newcastle pressed forward for an equaliser, but it never looked likely as Spurs, always pushing forward on the break, could have added to their lead.

After showing such aptitude in playing with ten men, it may not be outrageous to consider that this is a cunning tactic instigated by Redknapp to try and draw the opposition out from their defensive third?. Surely it would be naïve for us to think this stroke of genius is beyond our “Saviour”.

Perhaps harry told Jermaine Defoe that the linesman at Villa park had a thing for raised arms, or maybe he had a quiet word with Kaboul at half time and said “if things are looking a bit defensive second half, nut him”.

Innovation like this would impress the very best of Harry’s managerial counterparts, even Mourinho and his intentionally time wasting Gallacticos. Whatever the reason (lets just hope it was coincidence) Spurs have won again in difficult circumstances and their form is verging on imperative. The season of good will is being kind to Spurs and on Saturday a new year starts, that year will end in 1 and we all know what that means…..lets start dreaming.

Porto restored their eight-point lead in the Liga Sagres with a 3-0 win away to Pacos de Ferreira on Sunday, but hapless Naval lost again.

Walter added a third shortly afterwards, but the scoreline did not do justice to Pacos’ dogged performance.

Uniao de Leiria piled further misery on Naval de Maio with a 3-0 win away to the league’s bottom club.

The visitors took just 15 minutes to breach the Naval defence, with Carlao striking from the penalty spot.

Uniao went down to 10 men with the dismissal of Paulo Vinicius in the 51st minute, but Naval were unable to take advantage and China’s Chengdong Zhang put the visitors further ahead on 64 minutes.

Diogo Amado rounded off the scoring with a goal in the 90th minute.

Uniao climb to third in the table, six points behind second-place Sporting Lisbon, while Naval remain rock bottom, eight points from safety.

Second-bottom Portimonense came away from Maritimo with a 1-1 draw despite finishing with 10 men after a last-minute own goal from Rafael Miranda.

Maritimo had taken the lead through Tcho in the 66th minute before the visitors lost Jumisse to a second yellow card with 12 minutes to go.

But the intervention of the unfortunate Miranda late on meant the spoils were shared.

Nacional missed the chance to climb to fourth after drawing 0-0 away to Olhanense.
