Rovers, City rue wasted chances

Blackburn boss Steve Kean lamented a missed opportunity after his side fought out a 1-1 draw with fellow strugglers Birmingham.

Junior Hoilett capitalised on a defensive blunder from Liam Ridgewell to help Kean’s side claim a share of the spoils at Ewood Park, after Lee Bowyer gave the visitors the lead.

But with both sides just three points clear of the relegation zone, Kean conceded a win would have been handy to better their survival prospects.

“I wanted to take a big leap today but we’re taking little steps and we just have to keep chipping away,” Kean said.

“If all the teams around you pick up wins and you only get a point you’re massively disappointed.”

“But today we’re probably a little bit better off than when we started.”

“The atmosphere in the dressing room is really down but we will soon come to realise that this is a good point today.”

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish was also disappointed not to come away with three points, and the Scot was disappointed with Ridgewell’s error.

“We can’t afford to give those sorts of gifts away but we came back in the second half,” McLeish said.

“We really could have crumbled after that but we had our backs to the wall.”

“It was a bad moment for Liam but the next challenge for him was to see if he could recover from it and that’s what he did.”

McLeish’s side also had injury woes to contend with during the match, with centre back Roger Johnson forced off with concussion.

“Roger was a little bit groggy. He was desperate to go back on but I wasn’t going to compromise his health,” McLeish said.

“He’s far too important a player for me.”

Fulham 3-2 Blackburn Rovers

I could only watch the highlights of this game, so feel free to comment and add to the match report.

What I made from the highlights, boy, what a good three points. Especially as Bobby Zamora got the winning goal. A penalty kick that he sweetly struck into the middle of the net.

Let’s not forget Damien Duff, though. Twice he cut from the right and struck with his left. The first strike, Paul Robinson got a hand; the second, it was unstoppable.

Still, a tough enough game. Not just because Blackburn Rovers scored two goals to Fulham’s three, but because penalty decisions just never looked like to go Fulham’s way. Until, of course the 88th minute, when Aaron Hughes was hassled by Blackburn defender Grant Harley. Mark Clattenburg gave the kick, Zamora scored and then a lot of disaffection from the Blackburn players – Gael Givet (a substitute) getting sent off after the final whistle.

11th place now and the Fulham squad really look to be playing good football with just results.

Special mention to Chris Baird. He made an important clearance from the line and an important tackle when Blackburn were on a counter-attack. He got a yellow but he made his voice heard as there was good penalty shout on the other end before the counter-attack.

Kean hopes hard work pays off for Rovers

Blackburn Rovers manager Steve Kean cancelled his players’ day off this week in a bid to halt his side’s bad run ahead of their match at Fulham on Saturday.

Blackburn have lost four of their past six Premier League games including a comprehensive 4-1 defeat at Aston Villa last week and Kean knows they desperately need to create more goal-scoring opportunities.

“We have got to make sure we get service to the front men and make sure we can dictate play. That has been one of the disappointing aspects of recent weeks; we have not had enough service to the front unit. We have been working to fix that,” he said.

“We had a good meeting with the players on Tuesday afternoon and we watched certain aspects of the game against Aston Villa. We’ve worked on that all week and the mood is good.”

The players have been forced to forego their usual Wednesday day off in order to get in an extra day’s preparation for the Craven Cottage showdown.

With new club owners Venky’s expecting great things from the Lancashire club, the manager will be trying everything he can to improve on the club’s current 14th position in the Premier League table.

“We’ve had a long week; normally we train very hard on a Tuesday and I give them the Wednesday off but we’ve been in all week. They have put in a lot of hard work on the training ground so hopefully we will see the rewards on Saturday,” Kean said.

“This match is an opportunity for us to bounce back. Fulham are in decent form so we know it will be a tough game.”

Blackburn will be without David Dunne (hip), Mauro Formica (fitness) and Phil Jones (knee). Junior Hoilett (hamstring) and Roque Santa Cruz (back) are both doubtful.

Rovers sign Schalke´s US star

Jones, 29, becomes the club’s second signing of the transfer window after the arrival of Roque Santa Cruz from Manchester City.

Manager Steve Kean, who visited India on Monday for a meeting with Rovers owners Venky’s, told the club’s official website: “He’s a fantastic signing for us.”

“Anybody who knows him as a player, he’s a natural ball winner, he’s a very good passer as well.”

“He’s got a fantastic engine, he can go box-to-box, he’s a genuine, all-round midfielder player.”

Jones, who was born in Frankfurt, made three friendly appearances for Germany before switching his allegiance to the US in 2009.

He joined Schalke in 2007, but has fallen out of favour with coach Felix Magath.

Kean talked transfers, among other things, with his bosses in Pune and hinted there may be more signings before the window closes at the end of the month.

Barcelona’s teenager striker Ruben Rochina is still on his wish-list along with Blackpool’s want-away midfielder Charlie Adam.

Blackpool remain determined to keep Adam but he is keen on a move to Ewood Park.

“It is ongoing on the transfer front. It has been slower than we hoped, which has been frustrating, but hopefully we can get this one pushed through (Jones) and then we are on to the next,” Kean added.

“Then we can look and assess the injuries that are coming back and if they’re coming back then that’s fantastic, if not then we might add another one.”

This Gerrard penalty miss against Blackburn would probably have not made a big difference to the eventual result ( 3-1 to Blackburn), but it would certainly have set up a tense last few minutes for the home side.

Blackburn hope to have their skipper back for the visit of Liverpool on Wednesday, but Ronaldinho is making all the headlines at Ewood Park.

Rovers boss Steve Kean has been without captain Christopher Samba for three matches due to an ankle problem, with his absence part of a crisis that has seen nine senior players sidelined through injury and suspension.

While Kean is undoubtedly in need of reinforcements, one man who may not have been among the obvious transfer targets is former Barcelona superstar Ronaldinho – a World Cup winner with Brazil and two-time world player of the year.

Headed for the exit at Italian club AC Milan, Ronaldinho was expected to join former club Gremio in Brazil. But the 30-year-old has also been linked with a shock move to the English Premier League with Blackburn.

Unlikely as it seems, Kean would be only too happy to make use of his considerable talents if he was to arrive at Ewood Park.

“If you approached any Premier League manager about the chance of signing someone who has been the world player of the year twice, then I am sure they would say ‘yes’,” Kean said.

“I know there has been contact made with the owners to representatives of Ronaldinho. I don’t know how far it is down the line or if it will actually happen. However, I think we should look at it as a positive.”

“It’s tough right now and that is why we need to bring some players in, not to replace the existing players but to help stiffen the squad over the coming weeks.”

“We will go out in a positive frame of mind against Liverpool. Our home record is something we are proud of and it is vital that we keep strong.”
