United lose Berbatov for Champions League semi

Manchester United’s Dimitar Berbatov will miss his side’s Champions League semi-final first-leg match with Schalke on Tuesday in Gelsenkirchen.

The 30-year-old striker, who is United’s top scorer this term with 22 goals, missed the team’s 1-0 win at Everton on Saturday, and will sit out the Schalke clash along with Darren Fletcher, Bebe and Owen Hargreaves.

The news comes on top of speculation about the Bulgarian’s future at Old Trafford, with rumours swirling that Berbatov is upset at being overlooked in favour of Javier Hernandez in manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s starting line-up.

Despite his efficiency in front of goal, Berbatov has started in only three of United’s past 13 games, although he does still have another year to run on his contract at Old Trafford.

Despite Berbatov’s absence, Ferguson insists his side are in excellent condition heading into the match.

“We are in good shape,” Ferguson said. “I needed to keep us fresh against Everton, knowing that three days later we would be playing Schalke in the first leg of a Champions League semi-final.”

“I had one eye on the trip to Germany and, of course, big games in the league against Arsenal and Chelsea.”

“I enjoy this critical stage of a season, when we are involved in big games that come at you thick and fast, with little recovery time in between.”

“Team selection comes into its own, and just as the players have to rise to every occasion, so do I as I try to keep the team fresh and raring to go.”

Alex Ferguson said he'd never seen a goal like Rooney's scissor kick yesterday.
But Berbatov has been scoring off scissor kicks for Man Utd with monotonous regularity.
Here's one against Liverpool..

And the first goal in this next video - against West Ham

Berbatov may be feeling a little bit put out by the fact that his own scissor kick efforts are not getting the same amount of attention as Rooney's.

Van Persie matches Berbatov hat trick

Berbatov scored a hat trick of hat tricks as Man Utd blasted Birmingham into 5 - 0 obliviion.
Van Persie scored a little hat trick of his own however as Arsenal happily sent Wigan home wiith the score reading three goals to nothing.

Berbatov brace sunders Sunderland

The Premiership got back on track and if Arsenal were hoping that the Black Cats would prove spoilers, then they were in for a rude shock. Steve Bruce's side looked like their Xmas lunch was still sitting heavy. That they only lost by a brace is a small miracle. Utd could have scored a half dozen or more easily.

Wayne Rooney has found ways of proving useful even though he last scored an open field goal in March and his nicely placed cross isolated high flying Dimitar Berbatov who headed past Craig Gordon for his first goal. Anderson appears to be fulfilling his potential as an attacking midfielder at long last easing Scholesy's retirement. His smartly placed pass found Berbatov wide on the right and the Bulgarian's angled shot deflected off Anton Ferdinand for his second goal and 11th of the season.

Man Utd's tradition of finding players rising to the occasion has much to do with Sir Alex's relentless exhortation to do better. He did not find too much satisfaction after the match saying that his team were guilty of complacency in the second half and pointing out Berbatov's squandered scoring opportunities.

With this win, Utd open up a small but significant lead over title holders Chelsea and Arsenal with a match in hand. The Gunners meet Chelsea tomorrow at the Emirates to try and narrow that gap.

Five-star Berbatov

Leaving a more detailed match analysis to my fellow blogger Shaun, this is just a few comments from me on the game and video highlights for anyone wanting them.

FOR SALE: comfy armchair, one careful Bulgarian owner, can be found at edge of Old Trafford penalty box, buyer arranges pickup. It looks like Berbatov has finally realised that he has not been at full potential and has decided to do something about it. Maybe it took the arrival of Hernandez for him to recognise that his place at Old Trafford was not guaranteed. Whatever the reason, another amazing performance from Dimitar. There is one statistic that says it all:
Season 2008-9, Appearances 43, Goals 14,
Season 2009-10, Appearances 43, Goals 12,
Season 2010-11, Appearances 6, Goals 7.
He is already half-way to his best goal haul and we’re only in September.

I was concerned at how we threw away a 2-0 lead yet again. This is definetely something to address. The defence really needs to tighten up. Thankfully today, we got through it.
