A New Hope: Qatar May Lose 2022 World Cup

The recent revelations made by former FA chairman Lord Triesman’s claims to Parliament’s football governance inquiry that FIFA’s Jack Warner, Nicolas Leoz, Worawi Makudi and Ricardo Teixeira asked for a variety of bribes in return for their England 2018 World Cup vote were hardly surprising. We all know FIFA is corrupt, especially the bid process, but the truly shocking revelation about the Qatari bid from a whistle blower inside the Qatari bid team are now threatening to bring about some long awaited justice and strip the tiny Gulf nation of the tournament.

Now I’ve been a pretty big critic of the Qatari bid from the start, and frankly it was absurd to even allow a bit from a country of 1.6 million people, no football culture, and 50C temperatures in the summer. But that said, if they had won the bid fair and square they deserved to hold it, but we all know they didn’t. Politics in the Gulf is marked by bribery, corruption, and nepotism and the Qataris brought that perspective with them, along with a lack of any sense of irony or cynicism to FIFA. It won’t surprise many that a government based on bribery, corruption, and nepotism found fertile ground in which to plant itself in Zurich, but what was surprising was how they seemed to think no one would notice what was going on.

Well now there is evidence behind it, and a re-vote seems possible, but unlikely. I hope they strip Qatar of the World Cup, and give it the second place bid, the United States. A re-vote would inevitably be marred by further allegations of corruption, and another bid process would be too costly. Qatar has lost all credibility, and no matter how much money they spend, they can’t hide now.

Let’s hope justice will be served.

Mourinho to Man City, Tevez to Real Madrid

In whats expected be the first ever player-for-manager swap, disgruntled and home sick Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez is expected to be swapped for “the special one” Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho.

Tevez, who has been unhappy at City, has been making everyone sick of his incessant whining for some time and has said today he definitely wants to leave the club. Tevez’s family, his primary reason for wanting to leave, never settled in England, and eventually returned home to South America. The main barriers to them staying in England were reported to be the climate and language, both of which would be out of the equation in Spain. He would fit well into the Real side, and could take Kaka’s place in the lineup when he leaves for Arsenal over the summer.

Mourinho has had many well publicized spats with the directors at Real, but that really isn’t enough to open a rift large enough to get him fired. what will get you fired at Madrid, more than anything else, is having a spat with a player who is integral to the club. Mourinho has made this mistake in his recent dealing with Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo isn’t just a big player, and prestige talisman for the club, he sells the most jersey and brings in the most money of any player in the world. For that reason alone Madrid will never sell him to City as the rumors have suggested. The Daily Mail maybe be reporting that they will sell him for 150m, but they also thought the war in Iraq, British imperialism, and Marmite were good ideas so we won’t be trusting the judgement of their editors thank you.

For all those reasons, it seems likely Mourinho will leave sunny Spain, for his much desired return to the Premiership, and with the two being roughly equal in value, and prestige, its seems a natural choice for them to be swapped in and out of Manchester City jersey.

I for one, will welcome the new Portuguese overlord of the blue side of Manchester, and look forward to watching him spar with Sir Alex on a regular basis.

The Laws of Football – Football Kits

The clothes and kit worn by football players is governed by a section in the Laws of the Game. Under Law 4: The Players’ Equipment, players on a football team must all wear five specific items of clothing. The first is the football shirt, which has to have sleeves although they can be of any length. The second item is a pair of shorts, although goalkeepers are permitted to wear tracksuit bottoms instead. Third are the socks, which must be long enough to cover a fourth piece of equipment, the shin pads. These are to be made of a rubber or plastic material, or something along the same lines that offers a “reasonable degree of protection” from potential injury.

The fifth and final piece of equipment all football players must wear is simply recorded as footwear. Contrary to what you might expect, players do not actually have to wear the studded football boots you see most of them in, although obviously the vast majority still choose to. All players are actually permitted to wear gloves if they so wish, although it’s rare for any player except the goal keeper to do so. Nowadays most goal keepers wear special goal keeping gloves to help them in their position.

In terms of uniformity, all players on the team have to wear the same kit with some minor exceptions such as the goal keeper’s tracksuit bottoms. The captain of the team must wear a small armband in order to distinguish him from his team mates.

The goal keeper is required to wear a shirt that contrasts with other players. When playing another team, Law 4 states that “the two teams must wear colours that distinguish them from each other and also the referee and the assistant referees”. Hence most teams have a second kit in a different colour to their primary one. If two teams playing each other would be wearing similar or identical colours, it is the away team that must change into their alternative kit, hence the term away kit.

Almost as fun as a cold Tuesday night in Glasgow

Browse > Home / Features / Almost as fun as a cold Tuesday night in Glasgow

Wayne Rooney’s inability to score in anything other than a Manchester casino with £1,200 in his back pocket once again left England frustrated last night, as a five year-old nation that can call on a population smaller than the city of Leeds for its talent battened down the hatches at Wembley.

With Jermain Defoe taking the much more preferable option to have ankle ligament damage, Fabio Capello opted to use a 7ft broom handle to partner Rooney up front. Granted however, in England’s last 14 games, said broom handle has managed to score five goals compared with Rooney’s one.

When it was clear that such an approach was going to be ineffective against a side ranked below Gabon, Burkina Faso and even the Republic of Ireland, Capello chanced his arm and threw on Kevin Davies for his first England cap, just reward for the 33-year-old’s ability latch onto 56 hoofs up field from the Bolton left back in 254 Premier League games since 2003.

In truth, the only thing resembling any sort of excitement from last night amounted to little more a credible England penalty claim, Montenegro hitting the bar and the East Stand food kiosk needing an emergency change order after the till ran out of 10p coins.

It was all too much for the Club Wembley suits, who found the spread in the VIP lounge far more entertaining whilst the fans in steerage voiced their discontent. Even Adrian Chiles’ dulcet West Midland’s tones seemed downbeat at the full-time whistle.

Those viewers with the full glory of Sky Sports could at least console themselves with the knowledge that there was something far more entertaining going on in Glasgow.

Scotland the Brave battled back from 2-0 down against Spain, champions of ticky-tacky football, to level the match with 25 minutes remaining at Hampden.

However, with Scotland mastering the art of perennial disappointment even more so than England, their brave, committed performance ended like so many of their other brave, committed performances – with a winner for the opposition 10 minutes from time.

Have the wheels fallen off the England bandwagon? Of course they haven’t. There will be plenty of opportunity for England to prove that 2012 will “definitely be their year” in a month’s time when they face a France team that have most of their side sat on the naughty step.

Rio bringing his ‘A’ game

Fans will once again trudge up Wembley Way tonight for another night of confirmation that England can see off the minnows of world football with only minor deficiencies in their back four.

After victories against Bulgaria and Switzerland, England now face up to Group G leaders Montenegro, a side ranked a positively dizzying 40th in the FIFA rankings.

The Montenegrin’s clearly aren’t one to take lightly then and their 1-0 wins over Wales, Bulgaria and most recently, Switzerland, suggests that an on-form strike force will be needed if England are to overcome what is clearly a well organised defence. Unfortunately, no such strike force exists at present so Fabio Capello will have to make do with Wayne Rooney, Kevin Davies and a cameo substitute appearance from Adam Johnson.

The danger man for Montenegro is Roma forward Mirko Vucinic, who has 87 Serie A goals to his name and 21 Montenegro caps, returning eleven goals. He’s score two of his country’s three Euro 2012 qualifying goals so far, so he clearly isn’t to be messed with. Any players of note beyond Vucinic had clearly evaded the eyes of our researcher.

It’s perhaps because of that particular threat that World Cup crock Rio Ferdinand will once again pick up the keys to the Wembley captain’s lounge for tonight’s match. He will take his place in defence instead of Phil Jagielka, who has a hamstring problem, and John Terry, who will instead spend the evening enjoying back spasms, the nauseating ITV duo of Adrian Chiles and Clive Tyldesley and a Hyundai advert during the game’s only key point.

Of course, Rio has done his level best to look remotely interested ahead of kick-off, suggesting that England will have to be slightly better than they were in that match against Germany to beat a team who are almost as good as Burkina Faso.

“It will be a hard game and we’ve got to make sure we bring our ‘A’ game because they’ve started very well in the group,” he claimed, before thinking of an amusing prank for his next World Cup Wind-ups show.

Meanwhile, Fabio Capello has dismissed suggestions that Steven Gerrard will be upset at not being allowed to wear the captain’s armband or to choose the CD on the team bus, claiming: “I decided when I started as England manager who will be the captain and the vice-captain.

“When I spoke with Steven I told him, ‘you were a fantastic captain and you have to play like a captain on Tuesday’.”

If you’re looking for form ahead of tonight’s game, you’re out of luck. Montenegro has only existed as an independent team since 2006. The best we can offer you is a 2003 meeting between England and Serbia & Montenegro in Leicester. Joe Cole saved England’s blushes that day with an 82nd minute strike in a 2-1 friendly win.

FA Cup Preview: Manchester City v. Stoke

The storied franchise of the FA Cup will be renewed once more tomorrow as Manchester City meet Stoke at Wembley to decide who will carry the Cup home. Man City are hot favorites for this encounter, but don’t look for Stoke for to lie down and die. Both clubs are sorely hurting for silverware, and will give everything to take something away from Wembley today.

Manchester City are a club who have managed to secure Champions League football next season, but it has to be said that this was only the side show to the real hope of their supporters, an end to the 35 year trophy drought that has come to define them. Kevin Keegan may have put it best in his column on ESPN:

“If you win one trophy then often others will follow. It can spark a domino effect. City haven’t won something for so long – 35 years, since the 1976 League Cup final – so they really need to have their name up in lights once again to get that winning feeling back. Yes, the Champions League is lucrative and prestigious, but if you could pick either fourth place or the cup, I would have said the cup. The men in Manchester City jerseys have a trophy drought hanging over their heads, and ending it is paramount.”

City will have to do more than just show up today to make it through the men from Stoke, but if they can wake up early on in the match, and not get complacent, their superior quality in players and management should lift the mover the top. If they do get complacent, look for Stoke to punish them on the break, scoring from outside the box with longer shots. They know they can’t stand toe to toe with City defense, and they won’t try.

For Stoke to upset City, they’ll need to play out of their skin for all 90 minutes. If they can manage to strike early, and keep City on the back foot, they may be able to hold on for long enough to win. Mancini’s tactics on the pitch have shown he adapts poorly to these situations, and once his side with less than 20 minutes remaining he becomes reckless. If Stoke can exploit this, they may just pull it out of the hat.

Overall, I hope it will be a good even match, but I’m prepared for a one sided affair.

Prediction:

Manchester City 3-0 Stoke

World Cup Golden Ball

When the World Cup was first devised, by FIFA secretary Jules Rimet in the 1920’s, even he surely did not realise just how big an event his brainchild would become. The World Cup has changed incredibly since the first tournament in Uruguay, where thirteen teams took part, to today when 32 nations fight it out to change their destiny.

The World Cup also has the ability to drastically alter the fortunes of players and the winners of the Golden Ball award, for the tournament’s best player, will testify to this. The Golden Ball winner is one of the most popular things to bet online on at a World Cup and although one should try to pick a player who is at a team that should go far in the Cup, the award is notoriously hard to pick and this year’s winner, Diego Forlan was at rather long odds before South Africa. Here are a few players who should be gunning for the award in three years’ time, so keep your eye on them between now and Brazil 2014.

Lionel Messi
The current World Player of the year had a hard World Cup this year but it is easy to forget that little Leo is still only 22-year- old. The next tournament, in his home continent, looks all but set to be dominated by the diminutive player who continues to shock us with his incredible form for Barcelona.

Cristiano Ronaldo
Another player who has already achieved so much but still will be under 30 when the next World Cup comes around. One would think that the World Cup would be the perfect stage for the Portuguese’s flamboyant style, but it has not worked out yet. Ronaldo still has at least one more chance to impress though and it would be hard to bet against him.

Neymar
Neymar is still only 18-years-old but the Santos striker is the latest of the established conveyor belt of incredible Brazilian forwards. He has already been capped for the Selecao and looks set to establish himself in the first team before the World Cup on home soil in four years. Watch out, because this boy is a real talent.

Two chances for Wolves to get the win they need

By: DJ | May 9th, 2011
    Tweet

WOLVES V ALBION 4 GD 08Sunday’s win against Albion will stay in the memory of the current generation of Wolves fans for a long time as they rose to the big occasion and beat their biggest rivals and took a big step towards Premier League survival. There were plenty of good performances from the men in Old Gold and none better than Stephen Hunt, Steven Fletcher and Stephen Ward.  All smiles from Wolves fans this week then and the 2011/12 season might well have a happy ending after all.

Many Wolves fans were starting to think the club would not be able to find a way of winning without Kevin Doyle. Three defeats and two draws followed his injury and with Matt Jarvis losing his form, Wolves went into the derby without the two players who will probably start favourites to win the player of the season award. And it’s not fanciful now to say Wolves can make a big step forward next season if they can just stay up. Three Premier League strikers in Doyle, Fletcher and Ebanks Blake. Four good wide players in Jarvis, Hunt, Hamill and Kightly. A promising midfield with Henry, Guedioura, Edwards, Milijas and maybe O’Hara. And an ever improving keeper in Hennessey. The defence will be the focus of summer spending, and the future looks bright, the future looks an Old Gold shade of Orange.

But first there’s three more points to find this season. And although Wolves do not need to rely on any other team now to stay up it looks certain to still be all to play for on the final day. A win at Sunderland on Saturday lunchtime would all but clinch survival by taking Wolves to 40 points. And if Wigan and Blackpool then lost at the weekend then survival would be secure.

But in reality Wigan will be favourites to beat West Ham and Blackpool will fancy their chances of beating a fading Bolton. And Wolves have only won once away in 2011. So it’s far from out of the question that Wolves will go into their final game in 19th, and if Blackburn and Birmingham avoid defeat at home to Man Utd and Fulham respectively they would be out of Wolves reach. That doomsday scenario would mean that Wolves would need to win their last game and rely on both  Wigan losing at Stoke and Blackpool at Man Utd.  So the job is far from done.

But it won’t be like that. If Wolves play anywhere near as well at Sunderland as they did on Sunday they will get a result against a team that does not have any fit strikers with Gyan, Wellbeck and Campbell all unavailable. And its last chance saloon for West Ham at Wigan so that will be a tight one. Blackburn will likely be beaten by a United team looking to clinch the title. and Blackpool have not won any of their last 9 so can’t be tipped confidently to beat even a Bolton team looking ready for their summer holidays.

So Blackburn will come to Molineux with 39 points. Blackpool will go to Old Trafford on the last day on 39 points max and will surely lose there even if United rest a couple. West Ham can’t get more than 39.  So 40 points will surely be enough for Wolves, just a matter of whether they get there this week or next. And if its next, then that Blackburn game will be winner takes all.WOLVES V ALBION 33 GD 08
