Liverpool next for struggling Wolves

anfieldWolves go to Liverpool on Wednesday evening siitting uncomfortably at the foot of the table and in serious need of some positive results. Defeat at Anfield and at West Ham on New Years Day would leave Wolves adrift of the survival mark as we go into the second half of the season.

I think it’s fair to say that the jury is still out on Merseyside as to whether Roy Hodgson is the man to propel Liverpool back into title contenders. But they are certainly a long way off there at the moment. They sit half way in the league but points wise are closer to Wolves than they are to a Champions League place. It is the away form rather than at Anfield where they are still struggling however and Blackpool are the only team to have beaten them at home. Gerrard and Agger are expected to return from injury against Wolves and Torres is also likely to start having been rested from their latest Europa Cup game.

If the jury is out for Hodgson there is  an increasing number of Wolves fans questioning whether sticking with McCarthy is best for the Wolves. After last season’s 15th place and some promising summer signings it was hoped that a similar finishing position would be achievable this season. But the only target now is survival and the defeat on Sunday at home to Wigan was really damaging. With three Premier League matches in the next week there will not be any changes during that time but defeats at Liverpool and West Ham and then at home to Chelsea next Wednesday may well prompt decision time. Its not just a matter of allowing McCarthy the chance to pull things around its about who would be called on to replace him. There are three established top flight managers out of work right now in Allardyce, O’Neill and Curbishley. I would personally be praying that the Allardyce style wasn’t imposed on Wolves, and Curbishley has been out of the game for a while now although his job at Charlton has to be respected. Could Wolves attract Martin O’Neill? Personally I think yes, and if that were true then it would have to be tempting.

For the Liverpool game there has to be changes from the Wigan game although injuries do reduce the options. There is no question that the injuries to Craddock. Henry and Doyle – the spine of McCarthy’s first choice team – has been a massive blow and are strong in McCarthy’s defence at Wolves position. Defensively Wolves have been poor most of the season and only Berra could be sure of retaining his place after the Wigan game. Foley could be restored to right back and Ward left back  with Zubar and Elokobi competing with Stearman for a centre back slot. In midfield Jarvis must return and maybe Jones too, with Edwards also competing for a central midfield role. Up front there must be a clamour for top scorer Fletcher to finally get  a start but would McCarthy risk a 4-4-2 line up in such an away game?

It’s probably more in hope than expectation that Wolves look for a vital point or 3 at Anfield but such is their position that some unlikely points are going to be necessary to achieve a place in the top 17. After this game the season will be half over so there is still plenty of time to correct things, but you have to sense that the table could be very ugly if Wolves are unable to find some points in any of these next three games.
