We posted on this site a few weeks ago that the next 7 games would define Wolves season. The run of games against the top 4 teams were behind us and we faced 7 games that all looked like they could produce possible points. Well we lost the first two and won the third so we have held our own but made little progress up the league so far. But now the manager has followed our hint.
I picked up this quote today – ‘The next 6 games could define our season and we need to make the most of them’. Trouble is, that isn’t a quote from Mick McCarthy it comes from Sam Allardyce the manager of Wolves opponents on Saturday, Blackburn Rovers. They have games coming up against Wolves at home, Bolton away, West Ham and Stoke at home then Albion and Sunderland away. And they see that run of games as their opportunity to move away from the relegation dogfight. They go into Saturday’s game on the back of their heaviest ever Premier League defeat, a 7-1 hammering at Old Trafford that has made them the highest conceding team away from home in the division. But at home they have conceded only 6 in 7 games and have scored only 6. So at home they are miserly but their last home game against Villa was the only time they have won by more than one goal. Morten Gamst Pedersen is their top scorer with 4 and nobody else has got more than 2.
So for both teams its a key part of the season and Wolves will not after all have last season’s defence avaiable to them. Jody Craddock is likely to miss at least another 6 weeks, having hoped to be back in full training this week. But his hip was still giving him problems when he stepped up the exercise so we will have to do without him for a while. More positive injury news is that Dave Edwards will be back in full training this week and Karl Henry will be back before xmas rather than after. And even some positive news about Michael Kightly who is to have a further knee operation but as the one on his other knee looks to have been a success he should be back in training in January. Lets hope it’s all a success and we see him back in a Wolves shirt sooner rather than later.
Christophe Berra will be back from suspension and a cert to start on Saturday but who will partner him in the centre of defence. I suspect it will not be Richard Stearman who has generally played well in recent weeks but is prone to costly mistakes. Elokobi who played alongside him last weekend impressed everyone and may retain his place. The other possibility would be to move Zubar to centre back and reinstate Foley at right back. That option would allow Stephen Hunt to be recalled to the wing and his confidence is likely to have been boosted by his goal against Sunderland. But strikers Ebanks Blake and Fletcher look set to contnue on the bench as Wolves will certainly stick to 4-5-1 for this game. But as we saw on Saturday – the subs are as imprtant as anyone in the modern game.
Fifty years ago this year Wolves beat Blackburn in the FA Cup final at Wembley by 3-0. A clean sheet for Wolves on Saturday would go down a treat – as would 3 goals in the Blackburn net.
