I think the hearts of all Wolves fans sunk when the team was announced on Sunday with the absences of Jarvis and Doyle looking to be the straw that broke the camels back as far as the injury problems were concerned. No defensive midfield player ahead of a defence that hadn’t kept a clean sheet all season and the two star attackers also missing. But what the players showed was that team work is more valuable than any individual and they kept the first clean sheet of the season and would have scored many more than one had it not been for the Blues keeper Foster.
Now we have to wait to see if any of the injured masses will be fit to return on Sunday, and whether they will be selected even if they are. There are many that would vote for an unchanged team given the performance last week but as Doyle and Jarvis are the most likely to be fit, it would be a brave decision to leave such talent on the bench for another vital game. Lets wait and see who is available before we get into that debate. But what Saturday also did was open the door for the team to revert to a 4-4-2 formation. On Sunday the defence did not look exposed by there being one less in midfield, and there were more players in the opponents area when Wolves were attacking and looking to score.
Certainly Ebanks Blake is impossible to leave out after his showing at the weekend and he has in truth been unlucky to have had so few chances so far this season as he has played well every time he has been given the chance. And Stephen Ward is finally getting some credit for his ability to make a worthwhile contribution from a variety of positions. Whether he was a left back playing centre forward or has been a striker playing left back is not important. What is important is his value to the squad particularly during this time of many injuries. Hennessey has made a good return between the sticks and Stephen Hunt’s form is now returning, and he is adding vital goals.
Lots of things to ponder but as the week goes on only one thing will matter. The first ever Black Country Derby is upon us and the first meeting between the Wolves and the Baggies in the top flight for 26 years. Its vital for the league position and for getting back to a point a game – but in reality it’s important cause it’s Albion v Wolves – there doesn’t need to be another reason.
