After only two Premier League games in March the run in to the end of the season starts this weekend. The final game against Blackburn at Molineux is only 8 weekends away now and who would bet against that being a nailbiting decider to the relegation battle. But first things first and Wolves will make the long journey to Newcastle this weekend for the penultimate 3:00 Saturday game of the season. And they will need to show the Geordies and their own fans that there is life without Kevin Doyle in this Wolves team.
It is clear from comments made by McCarthy this week that he does not intend changing the formation of the team as a result of the loss of Doyle so one of the other strikers at the club will be asked to play the lone striker role with the choice resting between Ebanks Blake, Steven Fletcher and Stephen Ward. And it would be a major surprise if it wasn’t SEB who is asked to step up to the mark. He has been the most impressive of the three over the season but its a tiring role up front alone and Fletcher will likely be asked to pick up the baton for the last 20 minutes or so.
Although Ronald Zubar and David Edwards will also not be available through injury we will doubtless see Michael Kightly on the bench again and Stephen Hunt has also been in full training this week and he will also likely be a sub. Even better news on the injury front is that Adlene Guedioura is also now back in action after his early season broken leg. He made his comeback for the reserves at Blackpool on Wednesday evening where James Beattie put the home team ahead after 10 seconds. But Guedioura got the equaliser and completed all 90 minutes in a game Wolves eventually won through a Nathan Rooney penalty.
Doyle’s injury apart it’s been a proud week for Wolves with Jarvis becoming the first England international since Bully, and Hamill getting a late call to the Under 21s. Foley, Berra and Milijas also got further caps to measure the progress this team of largely ‘Championship’ players. Truth is its a team that is developing all the time and look well capable of putting relegation fights behind them in future seasons. But thats only if they can find a minimum of 3 wins in the next 8 games.
