Republic of Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni has denied he suffered a stroke during minor surgery in Italy late in 2010.
It had been reported in Italian newspaper Libero that the 71-year-old was recovering at home following a mild stroke during an operation on December 28, with claims he had been partially paralysed down the right side of his body.
However, the Football Association of Ireland said in a statement that although Trapattoni did undergo surgery, the reports of a stroke were inaccurate.
“Giovanni Trapattoni underwent scheduled surgery before the New Year on the carotid artery. The operation went well, and he is recovering in a stable condition at home,” the statement read.
Trapattoni also released a statement denying the stroke, and said he would be in Ireland in January to carry out his duties as coach.
“I had a scheduled operation to clean the carotid artery on December 28 in Milan. I am recovering well and expect to return to work in the coming weeks,” the Italian said.
“Contrary to media speculation, I can confirm that I have not suffered a stroke. I will be in Ireland on January 24 to announce my squad for the Carling Nations Cup match against Wales on February 8.”
