Jarvis gets England call-up

Wolves winger Matt Jarvis has received his first international call-up for England’s Euro2012 qualifier with Wales and friendly with Ghana.

The 24-year-old has impressed in Wolves’ relegation battle in the Premier League this season and scored the winner in a crucial Midlands derby at Villa Park on Saturday.

Jarvis has been named in two provisional squads before but never made the cut, and received his opportunity in Fabio Capello’s 26-man squad after injuries ruled out Theo Walcott and Adam Johnson.

Jarvis becomes the first Wolves player to be named in a full England squad since Steve Bull in 1991 and will battle with the likes of James Milner, Aaron Lennon and Ashley Young for a spot on the wing.

Andy Carroll was also included despite fitness concerns, while Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard are sidelined through injury.

John Terry will wear the armband for the first time in a year for England’s tricky trip to Millenium Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday.

That is followed by next Tuesday’s friendly international with World Cup quarter-finalists Ghana at Wembley.England:
