Sunderland 0-3 Fulham

Sorry for this late post, folks. I was at a wedding over the weekend and couldn’t watch the game. But what a result. It may have been against a striker-less Sunderland but it was still a well deserved second away win of the season – judging by other media match reports and highlights.

A main strong point of the game was Fulham’s movement for the goals and other goal-scoring chances. A lot of defeats and draws on the road this season have come from some good performances that needed a bit more killer instinct in the opposition’s box to score goals. Against Sunderland on Saturday, Fulham showed that quality which was maybe been missing over the season. Bobby Zamora and Eidur Gudjohnsen’s link-up play was excellent while Gael Kakuta and Simon Davies, playing on each wing, were great at getting into attacking positions – for what earned them their goals.

A weak point may have been the couple of iffy moments when Sunderland had goal-scoring opportunities. Sunderland’s Lee Cattermole and Steed Malbranque should have put their names on the score sheet when each were allowed quite easily into the Fulham box. Luckily, Cattermole’s shot was more like a pass into Mark Schwarzer’s hands and Malbranque’s attempt at a clever chip went harmlessly wide.

These iffy defensive moments may not have happened on Brede Hangeland’s watch – who did not play due to a virus. Still, Fulham kept a clean sheet and won without other key players such as Clint Dempsey and Damien Duff. That allowed Simon Davies to take centre stage and score two great goals to help Fulham continue a strong end to the season.
