So after the international break, the Premier League was back with a bang, and a number of huge stories. Wayne Rooney not picked to play against Everton! Joe Hart makes a mistake! Manchester City don’t win! Lets have a look at what we learned.
1. Joe Hart is not invincible afterall.
He dropped the ball nervously for England in midweek, and everyone cringed, but at least that didn’t lead to a goal chance or anything. Sadly he isn’t as invincible as he seemed at the start of the season, as his mistake led to Man City conceding a (rare) goal from open play. He has held his hands up, but presumably Shay Given is rubbing his gloves together.
2. And so, Money can’y buy you wins
City ended up drawing the game 1-1. They’ve been tough to score against so far this season, but considering the amount of money they have spent on attack minded players, they’ve hardly been free-scoring entertainers either. Maybe its Roberto Mancini’s predilection for playing 459 defensive midfielders. Although one of them – Patrick Vieira -scored a nice goal.
3 Fernando Torres is not going to be cut any slack
He’s looked a bit indifferent for awhile, but he did score for Liverpool last week, and for Spain in the week, but a poor (and it really was) performance against Birmingham has meant the knives have come out. Ex-Liverpool midfielder and Sky Pundit Jamie Redknapp has called him out in the press, will be interesting to see how El Nino responds.
4 Wayne Rooney is not irreplacable.
The big story of the weekend was going to be Wayne Rooney, on the back of those revelations about his private life, returning to play his old club, Everton. Except Fergie dropped him and stuck Berbatov up front on his own, and the oft-maligned Bulgarian did a fine job.
5. But sometimes your defence is going to capitulate anyway.
However, he couldn’t stop Man United throwing it away late on, as Everton scored two late goals to draw 3-3. But Rooney wouldn’t have stopped that either, presumably.
6. Arsenal never have to play against 11 men for 90 minutes.
Another game for Arsenal, another opposition player sent off. Who says refs don’t protect them?
7. Chelsea are really rather good.
Not that we learned this, this week, but the space won’t fill itself. Some have been suggesting that Chelsea have looked good against a comparatively easy opening fixture list, and while its true they haven’t really been tested yet, they still have to win the games, and they have been winning them pretty stylishly, and a +!6 GD already speaks volumes.
8. Karl Henry “isn’t that type of player”
A pretty robust tackle against Bobby Zamora broke the latter’s leg, and as always happens in this situation, we have hear how Karl Henry “really isn’t that sort of player”, as if that excuses a bad tackle.
9. Blackpool might be okay.
They might yet be Hull 2010, but Blackpool have got off to a fine start, a 2-0 away win against Newcastle will be very welcome indeed, and they are currently sat in 4th, up in the Champions League places. They may well prove to be okay.
10. And so might West Brom.
They aren’t in quite as good a position as Blackpool, but they got a valuable draw against Spurs, considering that they didn’t really play that well, and were without some of their big players. Maybe they’ll be alright as well.
