Wolves travel to White Hart Lane on Saturday with fond memories of their visit last year which ended with one of their best results of the season. Beating Spurs 1-0 home and away in 2009/10 will probably remove any hint of complacency from the preparation of the home team who will doubtless be looking to put matters straight.
Spurs currently sit two places behind Wolves in the League table and have yet to win or score in a home game in the Premier League this season. They drew 0-0 with Man City on the opening day when they certainly deserved 3 points, and then surprisingly lost 1-0 to Wigan in their last home game, after clocking up 9 goals against them last season. Away from home they have won at Stoke and drawn with Albion. So not a great start to the season and maybe they have been distracted by their first venture into the Champions League. They qualified for that courtesy of a 4-0 home win against Young Boys of Switzerland after coming back from 3 down in the away game to lose 3-2. Then this week they played their first group stage game when they surrendered a 2 goal advantage but nevertheless got a good draw in Bremen.
Teams can have a hangover from trips into Europe and they have also suffered some disruption to their team with top scorer Defoe and first choice centre back Dawson both injured. There will be a doubt as to whether Ledley King can play twice in a week so they may give a debut to William Gallas. While up front there could be a return to the firing line for former Wolves favourite Robbie Keane.
Wolves meanwhile have to replace the suspended Christophe Berra and it all points to Richard Stearman getting the call. Mouyokolo is not yet considered ready while Zubar is still struggling with injury and it looks like Mancienne will continue in midfield. The weekly debate on who plays on the opposite wing to Jarvis will depend on how match fit Van Damme is considered to be. He only played half a game at Fulham but did quite well in that time and scored his first goal for the club. Guedioura is on stand by, although David Edwards is now fit for consideration.
The playing of Henry and Mancienne in front of the defence does give licence to continue with two strikers even for a tough away game. Ebanks Blake has made a fine start to the season but there is still a keen sense of anticipation at seeing the two £6.5m men Doyle and Fletcher partnered together for the first time in a competitive game. They will potentially form the strongest Wolves front line for many years and both also have the skills to hold the ball up and take pressure off the defence. I think they might be given the nod tomorrow in the following 11;
Hahnemann
Foley, Craddock, Stearman, Ward,
Edwards, Henry, Mancienne, Jarvis,
Doyle, Fletcher
A repeat of last season’s success would clearly be a fantastic result but a point would be more than welcome and keep Wolves ahead of Spurs in the table. Spurs will doubtless find that Wolves will be tough opposition, not dirty just tough, and we wouldn’t want it any other way.
