So, off we go. A point. Yes, a point. It may not be much to those of you who follow the Gunners or Chelsea, but for us down trodden eastenders, it’s a glimmer of hope. When Gold & Sullivan announced that all squad players were available for transfer with the exception of Scott Parker, a sigh of relief was heard from Hammers fans worldwide. And so it is no surprise that it is Scott Parker who saves our bacon again.
Stoke City played quite well last week against Villa, with a last minute winner and Hammers fans must have felt that twinge of dread as they traveled north to the midlands. However things looked good from the first few minutes as the Hammers actually looked like a team who could score a goal. It took half an hour for West Ham to press home their advantage when a free kick from new boy Vic Obinna was poorly defended by Stoke allowing the loose ball to be bundled in by Scott Parker. Soon after Fred Piquionne almost cracked in a long-range shot that smashed against the crossbar and the Hammers were unlucky to be 2-0 up.
Unfortunately after the break, Stoke pressed forwards and a cross from bad boy Jermaine Pennant beat Da Costa and Kenwyne Jones nodded in for the equalizer. Soon after Jones won the ball from Matt Upson and only a one handed save from Rob Green stopped Stoke taking the lead.
Vic Obinna looked most likely to score with long range efforts while Da Costa had a great game and came close with a header towards the end of the game.
