The weekend win has lifted the spirits around Molineux and now at last we have a run of games against teams in the bottom half of the league. Blackburn away on Saturday followed by Birmingham home, Albion away and Wigan at home. Not a guarantee of more wins but at least a respite from form teams and top teams and an opportunity to get a few points in the bag.
Lots of positives from Saturday including a good return to the goalkeeping for Hennessey, an even more impressive return by Zubar and an impressive centre back showing from Elokobi. Ward provided some good overlapping full back play, Foley slotted well into midfield as did Mancienne, and subs Ebanks Blake and Hunt both came on and scored. And Doyle, Jarvis and Milijas provided the attacking quality that makes you feel Wolves surely have enough to offer to get above the drop zone,
McCarthy will feel he has eased the pressure and could not resist a dig at the ‘internet blogging numpties’ that have been calling for his head. I would never suggest the management and players should be above criticism and we will express our views on here when things aren’t going well, but you do wonder why some of the internet posters call themselves supporters when they rarely have anything positive to say about their club. I guess its just a reflection of their glass half empty attitude to life. In my mind McCarthy deserves the support not just because he met the promotion target of 2008/09 by winning the Championship, and kept Wolves in the top flight for a second season for the first time in a generation, but I think the team have shown progress this season in the quality of their play and it is only a matter of time before that improvement is reflected in results.
What McCarthy will have to exercise his mind this week will not be the numpties but some decisions on his team for the weekend. Berra will be back from suspension and Craddock and Edwards back from injury so he will have to decide whether to change a winning team. Wolves were able to survive last season despite not scoring many goals and they did so by changing to 4-5-1 and improving the defensive record. Between mid February and the end of April, Wolves conceded 10 goals in 12 games and having not kept a clean sheet this season they certainly need to find a way of reducing the goals against in this season.
The back four during that spell included Zubar, Craddock and Berra with either Ward or Elokobi and a return to that defence is now possible for Wolves for the first time this season. Elokobi would be unlucky to not retain his centre back place after doing so well on Saturday but McCarthy must be tempted to get that successful back line into action at the earliest opportunity. What we know for sure is that the man we signed in the summer to be the left back, Jelle Van Damme, will not be joining in because his sale back to Belgium has now been confirmed with Standard Liege rather than his former club Anderlecht the destination.
We now know that our 3rd Round FA Cup opponents will be Doncaster at the Keepmoat Stadium. A pleasant little ground and quite easy to get to, but before we go there we have some work to do to ensure we don’t go back there again anytime soon in a league encounter.
