Maybe coming to terms isn’t exactly the best way to put it, but the reality is that we are stuck with the midfielders we have until at least the summer. So whether we like it or not, Gibson, Carrick and a host of others that we don’t think much of will carry our hopes into May. Whether or not they end up delivering the goods in terms of solid United-caliber performances, let alone trophies, remains to be seen.
I do wonder whether Sir Alex’s refusal to dip into the transfer market (aside from the oft mentioned lack of funds due to the Glazer debt) was also predicated on the hope that some of our youngsters would have been able to step up in a big way this season. Some of the most promising youngsters (Pogba, Morrison, Tunnicliffe) in our Academy setup are midfielders and some rushed signings would have further shut the door on the opportunity for these youngsters to earn a spot with the first team.
The reality is that United don’t buy any players cheap. For one, they have to be deemed good enough, or have the potential to be United quality. That already inflates the price of a would-be target. Secondly, when United come asking, the selling club knows they can ask for a premium price since it is United and the club has always had to pay a little more than what would be fair market value. Knowing that, any midfielder(s) we signed would automatically be given a ton of minutes with the first time in an attempt to justify their price tag and wages. How could the club justify being in a situation where they end up playing most of their academy players at the expense of more established and highly paid players brought in from the outside? To avoid all of that completely, the easiest option is to not sign anyone, hope the current first team players can do just enough to continue winning while buying time for the young players to mature and be ready for first team experience.
Clearly, this is all speculation on my part. But in a season where United fans, blogs and discussion forums have been rife with frustration over the mediocrity of our midfield, I just needed/wanted to look at it from a different angle.
Does that alleviate my frustration with the current setup? No, not really.
But what good does it do for ourselves as fans and for the team if we just continue to lament over the poor performances of these midfielders in question? Since SAF has deemed them good enough to pull on the famous red shirt, we need to get behind these players and root for the team. After all, if there’s anything we’ve learned from SAF over the years, it’s that no one player is bigger than the team. As fans, we root for the team in red regardless of the name on the back of the shirt.
It’s just made more difficult when that same player makes an errant pass for what seems like the 20th time in the game.
No one ever said being a fan was easy. But it sure is fun….
