Tiote signs long-term deal with Newcastle

Ivorian midfielder Chiek Tiote has signed a new six-and-a-half-year contract with English Premier League club Newcastle United.

Tiote, 24, arrived at Newcastle from Eredivisie champions FC Twente in August 2010 for a reported fee of 3.5 million pounds.

The Ivory Coast international has started 19 matches this season, scoring one memorable goal – the late equaliser in Newcastle’s 4-4 draw at home to Arsenal.

The new deal contracts Tiote to the St James’ Park outfit until 2017.

“The experience of playing in the Premier League has been better than I ever hoped it could be,” Tiote said.

“This is a great club and the fans have been brilliant – I have never known support like it.”

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew praised Tiote’s contribution to the team on and off the field.

“Cheick has been immense for us this season and is exactly the type of player I want in my squad,” Pardew said.

“He is fantastic on the pitch and in the changing room and is vital for everything we want to achieve.”

“Cheick offers us strength and presence in midfield and has proved himself to be one of the best in his position in the Premier League.”

“He’s adapted brilliantly to the English game and I’m delighted he’s signed a new deal with us today.”
