Wolves have a tangerine dream

mickThe dream just has to be 3 points for Wolves this Saturday. Although the league remains tight and there will still be plenty to play for after this weekend, you can’t help feeling it will all start to feel a little desperate for Wolves if they can’t beat Blackpool at Molineux. But whenever Blackpool have come up on the fixture list for any team this season the opposition have fancied their chances of getting three points and it hasn’t always happened.

The Seasiders have been a breath of fresh air in the Premier League this season, playing an open attacking style that many clubs, probably including Wolves, would consider to be footballing suicide. But they have not been in the bottom three all season and showed that taking the game to the opposition can be a successful approach in this division even for a team favoured to be relegated. The entertainment value of their games can be judged by the fact that in all their last 9 league matches both teams have scored, and there has been an amazing 37 goals in those games. So Wolves will do well to keep a clean sheet and will need to improve their own goal scoring record to win. Wolves have got 17 goals in their 13 home games this season so just over 1 a game and 1 goal will almost certainly not be enough for three points against Blackpool so any Wolves fan expecting an easy win will likely be in for a disappointment.

It will be interesting to see how McCarthy sets up his team to take on a team that plays such an open game. Will he look to achieve what most teams have failed to do and try to  stifle Blackpool’s attacking instincts. Or will he play an adventurous game and take them on in  a goal scoring feast. My money is on the cautious approach and we wait to see if that works. If it is the intention to try to stop Blackpool getting amongst the goals then we may well see the same 11 that played at the Hawthorns with Foley and Henry providing the safer structure to the midfield. But Wolves do have players to call on like Hamill, Ebanks Blake and Fletcher if they wanted to play more expansively.

It’s a big decision for McCarthy cause this is a game Wolves cannot afford to lose and a draw would not be much help either. There are many games away from home where I believe Wolves have been overly cautious and the poor away record has been the outcome. If he adopts a cautious set up on Saturday then Blackpool’s cavalier approach could get it’s reward. With Wolves probably needing at least 2 goals to win then to play only one up front would probably be more of a gamble than taking their opponents on in an attacking game. We will wait and see.

Wigan are the only one of the other relegation threatened team in action on Saturday and they are at home to Man Utd. So a win for Wolves should see them climb above them and West Ham. And a two goal win would take them above Albion and out of the relegation positions. West Ham are at home to Liverpool on Sunday and would then need a win to go back above Wolves. While Albion do not play until Monday night when they visit Stoke.

So by Monday evening Wolves could be out of the bottom three if they beat Blackpool with everyone feeling very optimistic that surival can be achieved. But there will be a very different feeling if they lose and it will feel like there is a mountain to climb to salvage their season. Its the Carling Cup Final this weekend and there is a Premier League game between Chelsea and Man Utd that will capture the media attention on Tuesday. But for Wolves fans this Saturday is a far bigger game than either of those, and it might not be stretching the case to say that Wolves season might live or die on the result.
