SPL wrap: High five for Rangers, Hearts held

Rangers opened up a four-point gap in the race for the Scottish Premier League title with a 5-0 demolition of Motherwell on Saturday.

Kyle Lafferty nabbed the opener, Steven Davis and Nikica Jelavic doubled and tripled Rangers’ lead and Steven Naismith added a late brace in the rout.

It is the fourth time this season that Well have lost to Rangers by four or more goals, and their 30th straight winless result against the Gers.

Lafferty put the reigning champions ahead in the 18th minute, despite Steven Hammell’s attempt to clear from the line with goalkeeper Darren Randolph beaten.

It was a margin that would stand until the 51st minute, when Davis pounced on a rebound of Naismith’s blocked shot and picked out the far corner.

Jelavic, having already struck the bar and had an effort ruled out for offside, finally got on the scoresheet with a header to Sasa Papac’s cross in the 65th minute.

Eleven minutes later Naismith had his first, blasting a strike beyond Randolph from 22 yards out, and the Scotland international added a second in injury time with a fine shot from an acute angle.

Bitter rivals Celtic can close in on Rangers’ advantage when they host Dundee United on Sunday.

Elsewhere on Saturday, St Johnstone came from a goal down to edge Hibernian 2-1 on Kevin Moon’s last-gasp winner.

Akpo Sodje fired Hibs into the lead after 23 minutes, but Liam Craig levelled for the visitors 50 minutes later with a header from Danny Grainger’s corner.

Craig then turned provider in stoppage time, sliding back his pass for Moon to fire in the late winner.

Aberdeen ended an eight-game winless run with a 1-0 defeat of Inverness thanks to Peter Pawlett’s 75th-minute goal, and Hearts clung on for a 2-2 draw at Kilmarnock.

James Fowler’s deflected shot edged Kilmarnock ahead 10 minutes after the restart, but Rudolf Skacel’s 67th-minute strike and Manuel Pascali’s own goal nine minutes later handed Hearts the advantage.

Kieran Agard rescued a point for his side with an 86th-minute equaliser.

Premier League: Wigan 1 Everton 1

A late penalty from Leighton Baines rescued a point for Everton and denied his old club Wigan a crucial victory in the Premier League.

Wigan had led through Charles N’Zogbia’s first-half strike, but after Mikel Arteta had been denied from the spot by Ali Al Habsi, Baines showed him the way in the second half to ensure parity.

With just four games left, Wigan knew they had to make the most of home advantage over the Toffees – who have enjoyed a good record in this fixture down the years.

The home side got off to a great start when they took the lead after only 21 minutes.

James McCarthy was the architect, with a lovely dink forward over the head of two defenders into the path of N’Zogbia.

The Frenchman’s initial control was poor, but he kept hold of the ball inside the penalty area and curled a cracking left-foot strike into the top corner.

Everton had the chance to hit back 10 minutes before the interval, when Leon Osman was fouled inside the penalty area by N’Zogbia for an obvious penalty.

Arteta, back in the side after injury, put his hand up for the job, but his effort was magnificently saved by Ali Al Habsi, diving to his left.

Wigan suffered a setback just before the break when Momo Diame limped off to be replaced by James McArthur, but they came close to a second goal when N’Zogbia’s shot was well stopped by Tim Howard.

The American kept his side in it with two more superb saves to deny substitute Victor Moses, on for N’Zogbia, shortly after the break.

Everton took full advantage with an equaliser just 13 minutes from time, when Hugo Rodallega was penalised for handball inside his own area. With Arteta off the field, Baines smashed home past Al Habsi.

Rodallega had a late chance to win it for Wigan, but his left-foot strike was high and wide – which pretty much summed up his afternoon.

Premier League: West Brom 2 Aston Villa 1

Youssouf Mulumbu was the hero with a late goal as West Brom ended their 26-year wait for victory over Aston Villa with a 2-1 win.

With manager Gerard Houllier recuperating at home, Villa got off to a perfect start after a comical own goal from West Brom defender Abdoulaye Meite.

But they failed to build on that early momentum and were swept aside after the break as Peter Odemwingie and Mulumbu struck, even after Paul Scharner was sent off for picking up two yellow cards.

West Brom had not tasted victory over their neighbours since 1985 and were behind within four minutes as Stewart Downing’s centre was sliced past the helpless Scott Carson by Meite’s poor attempt at a clearance.

Under Roy Hodgson though, West Brom refuse to lie down and die as Mulumbu forced Brad Friedel in to a full-stretch dive to tip a long-distance drive around the post.

Both teams wasted ideal openings to add to the score line in the 23rd minute as Ashley Young and Carlos Vela both blazing over when clean through on goal.

Having played second fiddle despite Meite’s early error, Villa picked up the pace with Darren Bent flagged offside as he turned to fire in seven minutes before the interval.

With the hosts throwing as many players forward as possible, Vela and Odemwingie failed to win half-hearted penalty appeals straight after the re-start.

Parity was restored on the hour with Odemwingie ending a goal-mouth melee by hooking his 14th goal of the season in to the roof of the net after Scharner’s close-range shot had been blocked at close range.

But within two minutes, the home fans joy was dampened when Scharner was dismissed.

The industrious Austrian had walked a disciplinary tight rope since scything down Nigel Reo-Coker in the eighth minute of the match and another late challenge on Stiliyan Petrov resulted in his second caution of the game.

But unabated, Albion poured forward with Mulumbu on the end of a swift 84th minute move to clinch a well earned West Midlands derby win for West Brom.

Moyes: Baines will not be sold to Liverpool

Everton boss David Moyes has rejected claims that Leighton Baines will be sold to Liverpool next summer.

The England international has been linked with Liverpool, Bayern and Manchester City, but Moyes is eager to keep hold of his prized asset.

“I can’t see it. It’s not for me that one and I think Liverpool know that as well,” Moyes told Liverpool Echo.

“Nobody will leave the club unless I give it the go-ahead and that won’t change.

“We have signed Leighton on a five-year deal. I don’t want to sell him and Everton don’t sell cheap.

“The chairman looks after the players and gives them what he can. So Leighton’s not for sale – and they know that as well.”

Premier League: Sunderland 0 Fulham 3

Simon Davies scored a double as Sunderland slumped to a 3-0 defeat to Fulham at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Most of the home fans fans headed towards the exits in the 73rd minute when Davies scored his second, Fulham’s third of the game, but the rumblings on the terraces had started before that with Sunderland labouring all afternoon.

Stephane Sessegnon and Steed Malbranque were asked to fill in for injured frontmen Asamoah Gyan and Danny Welbeck, but never really looked up to the job for the home side.

Sunderland almost completely dominated the first-half without ever being able to make their possession count in front of goal.

Ahmed Elmohamady headed wide early on and Malbranque curled a shot wide of goal when in a one-on-one with Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer on the half-hour.

And they were made to pay for their profligacy in the 33rd minute when Gael Kakuta was left unmarked in the Sunderland box and stabbed the ball home from eight yards.

Sunderland went into the break trailing from that goal and never looked as though they would overhaul it in the second half.

They simply lacked any punch in front of goal and their only real opportunity was a chance for Lee Cattermole in the 56th minute when he shot straight at Schwarzer.

Fulham responded with a two-goal blast from Davies – the midfielder getting on the end of a Sidwell pull back from the left in the 61st minute and a Zamora cross from the right in the 77th.

Those Sunderland fans who had not left the stadium by the final whistle showed their displeasure, booing the home side from the pitch.

Manchester United

Position: 1st, 21-10-3 (73 points, +39 goal differential)

Away Form: 5-9-3 (+5 goal differential)

Recent Form: WWWDW

Last Meeting: Manchester 2 – Arsenal 0 (March 12, 2011) (FA Cup)

Remember when this was the “match of the season” and something we were looking forward to, rather than kind of dreading?

Well, not so much any more, eh? After a monumental collapse after the win over Barcelona, we’re now just more or less playing out the string, trying to make sure we finish in the top 3. Fans are already more interested in which players will be jettisoned and which players will be brought in than the results of these last few matches.

But pride is at stake, and it’s Manchester United, and a good result tomorrow will bring us a measure of salvation and something to build on and feel good about going into the final run-in and offseason.

I’ll be honest — this will be a short preview. I just don’t have a great deal to say. I’m still so disappointed by the way we’ve thrown this season away. Realistically, we don’t have that much to play for. I am worried that if this collapse continues we could find ourselves in a real dogfight with Manchester City for 3rd place. They are 5 points behind us with a match in hand and a lot of momentum. They’ve got West Ham at home tomorrow, a match you’d really fancy them to win. So if they win, and we don’t, and they win their match in hand, they’ll be even or slightly ahead of us on points, which is hardly inconceivable. And it really would be a shame for us to ruin what was a pretty decent 6 months from August-February with a terrible last three months, only to find ourselves trophyless and fourth place again.

The major drawpoint from that, practically, would be having to play an extra two matches just to get into the Champions League group stages. We could find ourselves in the position of having to play a team like Villareal, Lazio, Lyon, or, worst case scenario, Bayern, just to get into the group stage, with 30 million or so pounds in CL revenue at stake. If nothing else we could avoid the extra fixtures that early in the season. So let’s avoid that, shall we?

If nothing else, I think certain players may really be playing for their jobs. Guys like Almunia, Squillaci, Eboue, Denilson, Diaby, and Rosicky have been pretty disappointing this season and may very well be on the way out — but a couple of good performances here at the end of the season could sway Wenger one way or the other. It will be interesting to see if any of those guys get a run out in these last 4 matches, and if so, how they do.

Other than that, I’m not sure what to say — Arsenal and Manchester United is always a big rivalry, it’s always a big match, and at the very least it would be nice to throw a wrench in their coronation parade. Plus, it’s fun when they lose, and it would make us feel a lot better about our team.

In team news, we’re actually pretty fit for this point in the season. Diaby and Flaps are out. Vermaelen is actually fit, but given that he played his first competitive match in a long, long time on Thursday for the Reserves, and I can’t imagine Wenger would throw him into the fire so quickly. It is good to see him back, though, and I expect we will see him back in match action before the start of the season. Rosicky apparently has some sort of illness, and may or not be fit. Here’s my best guess at a lineup:

Wojo

Sagna-Djourou-Koscielny-Clichy

Wilshere-Song

Walcott-Cesc-Nasri

van Persie

Bench: Lehmann, Squillaci, Eboue, Ramsey, Arshavin, Bendtner, Chamakh

Wojo is the man in goal. I think we’ll see Sagna and Clichy at full back, and Djourou and Koscielny filling out the rest of the backline.

In midfield, I think we’ll see Song and Wilshere, and Cesc in the advanced role. It’s hard for me to really see anyone else starting there, although it will be interesting to see who makes the bench, because I’m not sure there will be room for both Ramsey and Denilson. Frimpong is technically back, too, we could see him make at least the bench for a match before the end of the season.

Up front, I think we’ll see the other 3 of the Theo van Nasregas foursome. Arshavin could see some time, too, but I think Wenger has gotten pretty set in the idea that if those four guys are healthy, Arshavin comes off the bench.

I guess it could be interesting to see if there are any changes to the formation or tactics — Wenger has gotten pretty set in the 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 we’ve used all season virtually without exception, but I know a lot of fans (including many of you commenters) who would really like to see us move to a more conventional 4-4-2. I guess it wouldn’t completely surprise if Wenger experimented a bit between now and the end of the season, but I can’t really see it happening tomorrow against Manchester United.

Speaking of that, it will be interesting to see what kind of tactics they use. They’ve generally had us pretty much figured out the last several times we’ve played — jam up the middle with good defenders and defensive midfielders, play a single striker up top, and hit us quickly on the counter by moving the ball quickly out wide or a long ball over the top. It’s worked like a charm against us the last 3 seasons, but with United playing so well with Hernandez and Rooney playing together up top, it’ll be interesting to see if they may try to be more attacking tomorrow.

They’ve had our number in recent years, although there have been several times we have outplayed them. Unbelievably, there’s a very legitimate chance of them winning the double, because I think they actually haven’t been that impressive this year.

Will the slide continue, or will we pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, play for pride and actually put in a good performance? We’ll see.

Come on Arsenal.

Liverpool Plan Ambitious Move to Sign Barcelona Youngster

Arsenal and Liverpool are chasing Barcelona star Bojan Krkic, according to reports in Spain.
Much was expected of the young striker after his prolific form throughout the club’s youth ranks, but he has so far failed to produce his best in the first team.
The 20-year-old has often struggled to break into Barca’s star-studded starting line-up and has been utilised mainly from the bench in the last four seasons.
But sources in Spain have suggested that Bojan will look to move on in the summer in a bid to secure more regular first-team football.
The striker has started just seven La Liga games all season, and only 40 since his breakthrough into the first team in 2007.
Now Barcelona are reportedly ready to let him leave and Arsenal and Liverpool are among a host of clubs who are keen on making a bid for him in the summer.

SOURCE: talkSPORT

Kenny Dalglish and Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli are planning for the long term and the club’s new owners are ready to hand the Anfield boss a significant financial windfall to invest in new signings and a move for Bojan would be a wise one.

The talented attacker doesn’t get much of a look in at the Nou Camp and has now been overtaken in the pecking order by the likes of Pedro and Dutch winger Ibrahim Afellay and appears open to a move away from the Catalan giants in order to get his career back on track.

Comolli has experience of wrestling away young talent from Barcelona having brought Giovani to Tottenham when he was at the White Hart Lane club. Liverpool are looking for new creative options in the final third but will have to battle the likes of Arsenal and Juventus for the Spanish international.

Having signed Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez in January it is believed that Dalglish is looking to make way for new signings with the likes of Joe Cole, Milan Jovanovic, Christian Poulsen, Paul Konchesky and David Ngog all linked with moves away from the Merseyside club.

Manchester United Plot £60m Tottenham Pair Summer Bid

Manchester United are ready to make a double Tottenham swoop this summer as Sir Alex Ferguson prepares bids for Gareth Bale and Rafael Van Der Vaart. The Old Trafford boss will be encouraged in any move for either White Hart Lane star if the North London club fail to secure a top four finish and miss out on Champions League football for next term.

Ferguson has targeted both Tottenham stars for some months and is looking to bring in new additions that can help resolve areas of his first team that he feels he can add quality to. The Scot has been looking to bring in a goalscoring midfielder and has identified Dutch international Van der Vaart as the ideal man for the job.

The former Real Madrid man arrived at Tottenham last summer for a fee of just

JackWell, now we have some momentum. Let's make this count, lads.JackThat's never a goal, but we deserve some luck this season. Thank you, Gomes.JackSandro with a blinder. Not closed down, but what a fucking hit. Shit.Desaillythe way we're playing so far, I'm honestly not sweating that early goal.
we will score.JackLet's talk for a second about that effort from the Mighty One. My word.JackTorres looks bright.龍爺right now looks like 4-1-2-3 with drogs drifting to the right.JackLooks a 4-3-3 to me, at least early.JackUp the Chels.龍爺no likes this 4-4-2...hope it doesn't backfire...JackApparently it could be a 4-4-1-1 or a 4-1-2-3. Who knows.ph0bolusKakuta with his first goal in the league...hopefully more to come.JackTeams added. Not sure how I feel about this XI.DesaillyTorres and Drogba starting.
