United CrestAn early kick-off time of 10:00am this morning sees United’s Academy take on Everton with what will no doubt be an unrecognisable team. The U18’s squad is currently playing in the Claudio Sassi Tournament in Italy so it’s a great chance for this year’s U16’s to get another taste of what to expect when they make the jump next season. Everton are still pushing for the Academy title and currently lie joint top with local rivals Liverpool on 52 points having played a game more. The two teams are due to play each other next week at Everton so today will be important for Everton to get the three points whereas for our youngsters it will all be about gaining experience and about their development. That said, no one should ‘expect’ a performance or a result today but, that’s not to say that some of the U16’s will look out of place today. I’m only guessing here but I think we might see the likes of Luke Hendrie, Jack Barmby, Ben Pearson, Matthew Wilkinson, James Wilson and Joe Rothwell playing and I’m sure Mats Daehli, Luke Giverin and Rafael Leao will also figure. Key word today, ‘development’. I’ll also be interested to see who steps in for Paul McGuiness as I’m sure he’ll be in Italy with the squad, Tony Whelan is most likely to my knowledge but we’ll see.
