So the first International break of the season is now behind us and we can get back to Premier League football at the weekend. And for Wolves that means the first of two successive Saturdays in London with Fulham this week followed by Spurs the week after. These two fixtures were worth 4 points to Wolves last season and anything near that this season would certainly consolidate a very good start to the campaign.
There was a positive reception to the work Wolves did in the summer transfer window but injuries have meant that the new signings have contributed very little to the good start. But over the coming weeks McCarthy will have growing selection headaches as these players become available. Stephen Fletcher was the main signing of the summer and although he started in the first game against Stoke he picked up a knock and we haven’t seen much of him since. Scotland did not select him for their friendlies this week because he was still feeling some pain but he is likely to be ready to take a place on the bench on Saturday, albeit after getting a pain killing jab.
Jelle Van Damme has also been carrying an injury and didn’t feature for Belgium this week but he is also likely to be in contention for the weekend. Stephen Mouyokolo has stepped up his training and is likely to appear in the next reserve game at Liverpool next week. And Stephen Hunt is a possible for the following reserve game at home to Newcastle at the end of September and is targetting a first appearance in the first team squad for the game against West Ham at Molineux on October 16th.
Added to that is the availability now of Michael Mancienne who captained England U21 to victory on Tuesday. And I think we will see him start the game on Saturday alongside Karl Henry in the centre of midfield to give Wolves a solid base for the away games coming up. And loanee Marcus Bent is also likely to be on the bench on Saturday.
Guedioura scored that spectacular goal for Algeria at the weekend and will be pushing for a place on the right of midfield. While the international break seems to have done the job of bringing Kevin Doyle to the boil. He looked a little off the pace in Wolves last two games after missing some of the pre season training but after a good performance for Ireland in Armenia at the weekend he gave a man of the match showing in Dublin against Andorra on Tuesday, scored the 2nd goal from 25 yards and was denied a clear cut penalty http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCzqIlYhftY He played for 84 minutes before being replaced by Andy Keogh. Foley was an unused sub in this game as were Berra and Milijas for Scotland and Serbia.
So we look forward to a day by the Thames on Saturday and the hope that the unbeaten run can be extended to four games to make it an excellent start to 2010/11.
