A few bits of United news have surfaced in recent days, all following a similar theme. Ivor’s post below details the latest rumours of Ryan Giggs being involved in the management of the Welsh team in some form, despite still churning out excellent performances for United. The monthly poll on ManUtd.com named Paul Scholes as player of the month for August. And it has been reported that Edwin van der Sar will be offered a one-year contract extension if he plays 30 games this term. Rooney has been generating the headlines for England, for both right and questionable reasons, but it’s United’s old guys who have been earning the column inches.
Speaking as a Welshman, I have no desire to see Giggs in the Welsh set-up, not yet anyway. That would purely be a distraction from United and as Giggs’ anti-ageing deal with the devil is constantly renewed, he still very much deserves to be there. Scholes recently stated in an interview that this time last season he wasn’t considering his football to be of an acceptable standard and didn’t think the 2010/2011 season would involve him. Although his tackling is still so bad its almost funny, his overall game certainly merited his inclusion this term. And the August player of the month award proves this.
As for van der Sar, if his form continues as it is, I wouldn’t bet against a renewed deal, despite his age. It would take him past his 41st birthday, but who cares? He can still pull off top-class saves every week and if he needs the occasional rest, who would deny him? The manager is very adept at balancing the important games with the inclusion on the team sheet of Giggs, Scholes and Neville, so one more in that clan can surely be managed.
All three’s Reds deserve the accolades they are being given for still playing as exceptionally as ever in their later years. But there is an issue here. It will be a very sad day when these players retire, but it will happen one day. I can’t help but wondering if the supposed new deal for van der Sar shows a little uncertainty in the manager of his other keepers abilities. Not quite the same situation for Giggs and Scholes as there is more depth in the midfield. But I have a nagging thought in my mind that as these players finally slow down, it will be almost impossible to replace them, not because there are no talented footballers out there, but because there is no one yet ready to step into their shoes as talismans.
