I’ll start by confessing that I didn’t catch the whole game. Due to numerous factors, I was only able to catch snippets of the 3-0 win. I’ve tried looking for a replay of the game on the telly, but haven’t been able to find a showing as the Inter/Spurs game seems to be dominating the replay telecasts currently. So here’s my abbreviated understanding of what happened in the game:
.We won 3-0!
.Nani and Fletcher both got hurt during the course of the game which doesn’t bode well since we have Wolves this weekend, City next midweek, and then, Villa a few days later. Not exactly the best time to lose our best player so far this season. Also, I think we absolutely need Fletch against City to counter their 5 man defensive minded midfield. Just feel like De Jong and Yaya would bully a tandem of Carrick and Scholes.
.Obertan looked good and may not be the waste of money that people had originally pegged him to be. Sure he still looks frail and capable of being blown away by a strong gust of wind, but he showed some nice touches and capped off his performance with a rather nice goal.
.Carrick still has a future with the club? Unless we bring in someone like Defour in January, I imagine we would stick with Carrick at least until the summer. Especially if our injuries continue to pile up, I don’t think we can afford to let go someone of his experience and talent. Also, he’s been getting more games, so this could be Sir Alex giving him one last chance to prove himself.
.Is Berba’s early season form disappearing? This is a tough call for me since I didn’t see him on the ball too much in my limited viewing today. I also don’t recall him playing too much of a part in the game against Spurs last weekend. Maybe he’s feeling the toll of not having Rooney alongside him up front to take some of the attention from opposing defenders?
.Bebe scored again! This time, a little more intentional than the deflected effort he got awarded with against Wolves. Seriously, maybe this kid ain’t half bad. Who would have guessed when we signed him a few months ago that he would be playing and scoring in a CL game this early in his career with us.
.With Nani out of this Saturday’s game, we can probably expect to see Obertan against Wolves at some point in the game. With Rooney still out as well, the stage has really been set in this early part of the season for the younger players to take these opportunities to earn a starting spot. We all know the quality of the players that are injured/hurt, so this unexpected game time for players like Obertan and to a lesser degree, Chicharito, can only aid in their development and enhance our squad’s depth for the second half of the season as we hopefully welcome back most of our players to full strength.
.I’m like a broken record when it comes to him, but Scholes has still got it.: outstanding vision, bad tackling and all.
.Feeling optimistic about our team as a whole. How much better have we looked this season without Rooney than we did last season after Rooney went out against Bayern? The emergence of our younger players is also giving me hope.
.Thankfully, no controversial calls in this game. And even if there was, always remember to play to the whistle!!!
Looking forward to seeing if we can continue our winning ways this Saturday.
