Two years ago – two years ago and a bit actually – Harry Redknapp became Spurs manager. were looking awful, struggling in the table, generally looking lacklustre. Its pretty unbelievable that just two years later, they have not only beaten the European Champions, but overwhelmed them.
The best player in the park, as he was for long spells in the first game between the two sides, was Gareth Bale. This, in some ways, is equally unbelievable. Two years ago, I pointed out an odd stat, that showed that Spurs couldn’t win with Bale in the side. The stat was robbed from The Guardian, and it was a tounge in cheek suggestion that Bale should be dropped from the side.
Beneath the joking though, I was quickly asked in the comments if it was a freaky statistic, or a genuine issue. It was a freaky statistic, but at the same time, Bale, whilst looking good going forward has not yet come of age. There is really no doubt that he has now.
My apologies, obviously to Bale. He was, as he has been all season, an absolute terror. But Spurs, more than that, were fantastic all the way through the side. They obviously gained confidence from their comeback in the first game between the sides, but they shredded one of the best back lines in Europe.
Spurs first goal came curtosy of a wonderful move, a great bit of skill from Luka Modric, laid off to Rafael van der Vaart who made the right run at the right time. Then Bale came into his own.
Crouch should have got a goal after Bale left Maicon for dead (something that, astonishingly, he did time and time again), and he cleverly hooked in a clearance which so nearly bounced in to score himself.
The Welshman did provide Crouch with a goal in the second half, the English forward making no mistake the second time around. Crouch nearly got a second in quick succession, but Bale had just about taken the ball out of play before he could deliver the cross.
It briefly looked like Inter might make Spurs pay for their missing chances, Sneijder had a Free-kick saved brilliantly by Cudicini in the first half, and Samuel Eto’o bought the score back to the 2-1 in the Second.
But Spurs third goal killed the game. Bale outrageously knocked the ball 15 yards ahead of Maicon stood in front of him, and then, incredibly beat him to the ball, before giving Pavlechenko nothing to do but slot it past the keeper, which he did.
Bale is the toast of Europe this morning, but lets hope we can see him in the Premier League for the forseeable future, he’s an absolutely incredible talent, and his rise in the last two years has been wonderful.
