Wolves entitled to have their dreams

By: DJ | November 5th, 2010

9679997Wolves go to the Theatre of Dreams on Saturday for the second time in 10 days and are entitled to believe they can give the Reds a run for their money. After honourable defeats at Chelsea and at Utd in the Carling Cup, followed by a deserved home win against Man City, Wolves are making a good fist of living with the top teams in the country and will go to Old Trafford in confident mood.

United have a few injury problems with long term absentees in Rooney, Valancia, Owen and Hargreaves being joined on the absent list by Nani and possibly also by Giggs, Fletcher, Anderson, Gibson, Macheda and Evans who will all be assessed late. Thats not to say the team they put out will be weak and  they will see this as a good chance to get three more points in the pursuit of Chelsea at the top of the league. After a mini blip with a few draws in September and early October they have played five times since mid October and won them all. So this is no less a test for Wolves as they face leg 4 of this difficult 5 game run against the top teams.

It would be a surprise if McCarthy opted to change the Wolves team from the one that beat City. A five man midfield is inevitable against this quality of opposition and it has been the most successul of formations that Wolves have found in the top flight. The likes of Fletcher and Ebanks Blake will be on the bench and ready to come on if Wolves need to look for a goal or two late on to rescue a point, but with Hunt and Jarvis now both in the side it is a well balanced team that can compete when the opposition have the ball and break into a 4-3-3 for attacking, with Edwards and Milijas showing that they can support the attack and pose a goal threat. The Serbian has now got 5 goals from only 18 starts for Wolves so as well as being the most creative central midfield player at the club he is also the midfield player most likely to score.

Acknowledging that anything Wolves get from the games against Utd and then Arsenal at Molineux on Wednesday is a bonus McCarthy has said that it is the 7 games that follow on from that which represent a more pressured period for the club. These are games when there will be more of an expectation of points and will represent a very different challenge from that posed by the big clubs. The seven games between Nov 12 and Boxing Day sees home games against Bolton, Sunderland, Birmingham and Wigan, and away trips to Blackpool, Blackburn and Albion. Now that the win against City has given  bonus 3 points, Wolves will be targetting enough to get out of the bottom three by the end of Boxing Day and then a third successive Premier League season will look more probable than possible.

Wolves have played United just 12 times in the last 30 years with the Reds getting 9 wins and two draws from those 12. Only the memorable 1984 success through Kenny Miller’s goal has seen a Wolves win and it would be ridiculous for the expectation to be anything but a United win on Saturday. But such has been the level of performance by Wolves in recent weeks that it would be disappointing and somewhat of a surprise if United were to beat Wolves easily this weekend. If the men in Old Gold can maintain the current form then a competitive game is very much on, and if the Reds are below their best then another bonus point is not out of the question.
