From the official site:
Liverpool FC have confirmed that Fernando Torres has on Friday evening submitted a transfer request. The request has been rejected.
The Club said in a statement: “Fernando Torres tonight submitted a written transfer request, which has been rejected by Liverpool.
“Fernando is under long-term contract and the Club expect him to honour the commitment he made to Liverpool FC and its supporters when he signed the agreement.”
Well, that looks like that, then.
The promises made in early January were clearly either untrue at that time or so fragile that even the return of Kenny Dalglish and something resembling positive football couldn’t rectify his concerns. It obviously hurts, as Torres has increasingly became the face of Liverpool over the past few seasons—he’s proclaimed his love for the city, for the club, and for the supporters since he arrived, and he always came back to refute rumors of an exit. Not today.
I’m going to eat, drink, and then drink more, and I’ll likely be back later to drunkenly expand on the reaction. For now go ahead and leave your thoughts below—but what this won’t turn into is a hate-fest for Torres, the club, or anyone else who has reactions that might be tethered to the situation. Not that this has happened in any capacity around these parts at any point, but people have feelings and shit.

I mean whats up with the management? Gerrard, Alonso(well he almost was about to do it), Mascherano and now Torres.
Liverpool may not be responsible for all of them , but I do see a point in few of them. We have been making mistakes since last 20 years now, we have to accept that because if we dont we would never reach to the top.
there is something wrong with the way, resources are handled at Liverpool, I mean who should i blame for this situtation, Hodgson, Pulsrow, Hicks and Gillet or the Board before that who chose to bring them in. there is no end and we got to make sensible management decisions
And I find articles over the internet stating - Would you forgive Nando? I mean wtf, he did not sleep with my gf! He has an aggeresive mindset, he has had no trophies on club level and he is 27, its obvious that he would be concerned.
Plus , I believe this thing was on the cards for long, the way kennny and hodgson use to support torres in their press conferences was only becasue they knew about this.
I dont know, we hear people saying the club is above everything, but do we not need a reality check!! Dont you guys think that we are in a position to say this because Gerrard did not pursue for Real Madrid? I mean every player cannot be wrong,BobbypayCalm down soft ladlfc4eternityI've just woken up after the excellent Suarez news, to the transfer request.
Stinks of agent influence again!...
However, if the lad wants out, we should quite rightly turn down his request now, sit down with him and tell him that he can leave for the right money in the summer with one big but...NEVER to an English club.
Tell him to 'sell himself on the pitch by his performances for the rest of the season and stop fucking sulking!'
If old red nose can do it to us (remember Heinze??...'never to Liverpool') Kenny and the owners can and should give the same terms/ultimatum to Torres.
Fuck him!
LFC are bigger than him!AshLet's get real here. No club in their right mind would pay 50 million euros for a injury prone striker, no matter how world class he is and especially as FFP comes into effect next season.
Liverpool's best bet is to sell him to Chelsea as they are the only club crazy enough to dish out that much cash on him, no foreign club would do that. Let's look at the possible foreign candidates, shall we?
Real Madrid: He's never gonna go there as he's a Atletico Madrid youth team product. So definitely no go
Barcelona: They dont need him. He just wont fit their style of play, even if he is a fellow Spanish international. Moreover they are more than likely to make Fabregas their priority.
Inter: They just signed Pazzini, but may still be looking for strikers in the summer. BUT it's a pretty long shot considering they are trying to curb their spending.
Bayern: Likely to be one of the favourites, but with Gomez's blistering form it's unlikely. Plus they favour Germany based attackers more...
Juventus: They are in the same boat as Liverpool, that is they are too very likely to miss out on CL next season. So it definitely wont be a step up. Plus they have been resistant to spending money.
Milan: I'm a Milan fan, so I can safely assume that at the moment we are in no urgent need for strikers. Plus we are more than likely to go for Balotelli than for Torres, if we do decide to pursue a striker in the summer. Also if we do decide to pursue, there is no way in hell we will be willing to meet Liverpool's asking price.
So, I think it's safe to assume that it is in Liverpool's best interests to sell him now rather than wait for summer. 35 million euros seems to be a pretty decent offer and if Liverpool wait till the summer to sell him, they run the risk of his price going down even further...mattrichwell i hope that the arrival of suarez will help change his minddsm9412Anyway, Noel, I take it that there probably won't be a new edition of Tea and Crumpets with the Chelsea Offside for that February 6 match after today, huh?NoelI was actually hoping to bring Tea and Crumpets back for that match, and though I really would be phenomenally amused if the Arsenal Offside was willing to stand in for their rivals... at this point the safe money would be on no Tea and Crumpets.ChrisLFCI can't understand the timing. I can't really understand the leaving. I can't understand wanting to leave for Chelsea. I do understand this makes me feel crappy on what should have been a day to feel happy for the future of our club.Azmatshahsi am gutted to be honest. i thought he was a RED through and through. i knew he was gonna go in the summer, but this has totally over shadowed the Suarez deal for me. and just when i was gonna get my first LFC INK. :( i think i am gonna go through a week of mourning..:(
Azzy, AustraliaYannAzzy, all the more reason to get inked. Show you're proud. Go for it man.EdAUSTRALIANoelEh, I didn't really care for that movie.YannYou should try the actual place and its lady folk. Satisfaction guaranteed.EdTrue story, when I was 11 I went to Australia and went to a nude beach.
Most embarrassing 28 seconds of my life.NoelOnce I'm showered in riches as a world famous blogging sensation I'll post an article via satellite uplink while sitting by the side of the Sandover Highway.YannA man who loves his wide open spaces. Excellent.NoelI'm more just the wanderlust sort. Wide open spaces or dense urban environs both appeal: Anything new is phenomenal until it becomes a little pedestrian and just part of the daily background. But I will admit to staring at Australia's outback highways with some envy.YannMate, have you seen Wolf Creek? It'll knock that highway love out of you quick smart.IanjamiesonIts all about money. How much does his Agent get from the deal? Stinks of bad advice being whispered in his ear, to me.IanjamiesonFollowing the tweets and it looks like I am right (8:08am UK time.... 7:08pm Aussie)liverpoolfootballblogDevastated. This could really dent the squad's renewed confidence and see us slip back into mediocrity.dsm9412Obviously it's not hard to understand where he is coming from, and he doesn't deserve hatred, but if he really wanted to leave, he should have handled it better.
Waiting until four days before the end of the mid-season transfer window? At a time when Liverpool need their superstars the most? Especially after the new ownership, the new manager, and the new signing, he decides that now is the time to say that he can't wait until the summer?NoelAs you say, the problem isn't so much the leaving--I know I could have accepted it last summer, and mentioned once or twice in the aftermath that if things weren't miles better by next summer I could accept it then, too. Problem's all about the timing, and that it seemingly couldn't be worse placed to hurt the club just when things are looking up.Silent_bob_uk2kVery disappointed. Paolo Maldini, Tony Adams, Jamie Carragher....even ol' Gary Neville - one club men, all of them, and I respect them for that. Rooney, Tevez, and now Torres....as you''ve said above, no sense of timing. I'm not going to spit bile, but Torres is for me now on a par with McManaman and Owen. Very talented etc. but no longer eligible as a 'legend.'YannTorres earlier this month - "My head is in Liverpool and on helping save our season. I am professional and I always fulfil my deals.” Loyalty in football. Right, so what’s new.
I know this might sound insane, but with Suarez in, what with the possibility of a sustained run of victories, is it completely out of the question that we could, somehow, miraculously finish 4th and have Champions League football next season. He might then reconsider. Stranger things have happened. LFC must hang on to him until the summer just in case, and if he still wants to go, let the bidding war begin at £50M. Then we’d have time to spend it properly on a replacement.
NoelWell, Rooney "came home." And so did Gerrard, I suppose. So who knows. Though right now this does feel like the end no matter what happens short term.YannI still think he’s great but it begs the question, does Torres really care about Liverpool if he could potentially fuck us at the 11th hour? Suarez ostensibly is coming in part for the Spanish contingent and to shadow Torres, and then just as he’s about to ink the deal, he discovers Torres wants out - he might well have been forgiven if he turned around and said to FSG, you know what, I think I might just stay put in Holland for the time being. What on earth is El Nino thinking? And yes, I like you have been drinking, drinking, drinking…NoelThat's part of the problem, of course--Suarez isn't a proper Torres replacement, really. He's a wide forward or support striker, not a solo striker. Not that you can't make a system work with somebody like him leading the line, but that's a huge shift for Liverpool when they're just trying to sort out basic competence again and the guy who's coming in has spent a month on the bench and will be new to the prem.alcatrazzledazzleFrom reading the articles about Suarez, he seemed genuinely inclined to come to Anfield because of Reina and Torres, the other Spanish-speakers on the club. And hours after he switches from Ajax, Torres gives him a big "Que te jodan!" I...just...don't...understand...it. To make a good run the rest of the season, Torres might want to have a come-to-Jesús moment with Suarez and the Kop.RoscoFuckin cuff him too the Kop end. If we can't have him, no-one can.
I have been drinking yes
Bed timeNoelI have been drinking yes
We all have been, I think. Rory Smith says the club is "very cross and very strong-minded" with regards to this whole fustercluck, so it could be an interesting few days. The question is just how aware of our surroundings will Ed and I be over those next few days? For now it might be time to play an anti-social round of "Drink vodka and watch Shaun of the Dead." That seems about right for right now.
EdI'm a Hot Fuzz man myself, but I'm not sure that even my favorite exchange could cheer me up:
"How's Lurch?"
"He's in the freezer."
"Did you say 'cool off'?"
"No, I didn't say anything actually"
"Shame."
"There was a bit earlier that you missed when I distracted him with a cuddly monkey, then I said 'playtime's over' and I hit him with the Peace Lily."
"You're off the fuckin' chain!"
At least the beer is flowing freely.
NoelSpeaking of exchanges, a pre-match chat with the Chelsea Offside likely seems out of the question. Maybe there's an Arsenal blogger out there who would want to be a stand in...EdI mean, fuck, just let things get out of hand quickly why don't you.NoelI do have a way with getting people pissed off with me. Thank goodness I'm filled with the kind of limitless self-confidence that keeps me coming back... wait, no, that's actually self-loathing. Yeah, not sure what that confidence part was about. And guess that's not really the same thing at all.
Oh well, wonder who I'll manage to annoy next? And is there a line out there for betting on it?
RoscoFuckin anchellotti's crooked eyebrow.
Dirty itiiiiiiiii fuckRoscoAthough he was "all for committing" not too long ago this does puzzle me. Player written transfer requests always seem like an inevitablity to me, "if he don't want to be here then fuck em!"
Is usually my philosophy, though whichever way u look at it Torres is world class. To see him playing in filthy blue would be like tasting vomit every weekend.
Suarez fits perfectly into the current formation (which includes Torres) that just sums up Liverpool these days. . . Built up, to get chopped back down again.
Hope to fuck he doesn't go.
justinCertainly feels like 2005 and the Stevie G saga once again. Perhaps Stevie G would be best to talk him around.
The bond was one of a kind but I don't really understand the timing of it though, Suarez is just coming supposedly to compliment but may end up just being a replacement instead. We'll still be short if that's the case.
It's still a sad day nonetheless, nothing can be stranger in a day's life of a Liverpool fan where we should be rejoicing that we have a new signing but it's been overshadowed by such untimely news.REDseptemberCant imagine any other top premiership club/manager selling one of their top players to a league rival.Hold of to the summer, make the right noises and watch Barca,Bayern,AC,Inter etc. come calling.Take the best price and say goodbye.............. If he can even consider signing for chelsea, his heart isn't 100% Liverpool F.C..................................................... Nothing changes,no one is bigger than the club. Y.N.W.A. 96Smitty_wyep keep him till the summer and fuck chelsea send him back to SpainLandingpartySo Sturridge and a shit load of cash and spend in the summer.. I''m stunned but he's obviously had enough.. Bit confused that he see's lack of ambition in Pool.. I thought Kenny, new owners, Suarez and pick up in form would be optimistic stuff..
lfc80ukLFC are on the up! Chelski are on the way down! We have just signed a quality striker to math Nando's ambitition and he does this! Don't understand it....
Breaking news Chelski have bid £350 million for Liverpool's history! Kenny says f***k off!BOBBYPAYI hear Roman will make a bid for Anfield as he's looking for somewhere for his players to take there dogs to have a shit.LOL
FUCKING BIN DIPPERSDeestinctI guess that's coz ur chelski's stadium's so full of shit until there's no more place for some extra right? so why don't you shut the fuck up and fuck off, fuckin idiot...LFC ForeverI don't get football any more. In the same season I've seen Rooney, Tevez and now Torres submit transfer requests. How do fans associate with their mentalities anymore. Gutted in their actions really. Thought fernando was a real Liverpool legend and understand he deserves to win medals with his ability but Chelsea are in decline too this season, that is obvious. In fact all the big teams are struggling aren't they? If Torres goes Kenny must stat because he has history of managing this situation. Remember Ian Rush is far greater a striker than Torres and he left once too. Luckily Kenny is so sharp that we didn't notice once in had bought the replacements in. Déjà vu here for me. The difference in the legend score is that Rushie gave a full season of notice about his intentions and we wished him well with honour and reputation in tact. Kenny hasnt been out of the game too long, the game has been out of the modern player too long and I feel sorry for these guys. Keep your money fellas, it's our honour that make us men. Liverpool will still exist in the morning and I'm not sure if the same good be said of Chelsea once the owner goes.WetCeleryWe would be absolutely astoundingly stupid to sell him to another premier league club. Just what we need to fall further back in the battle for fourth. The only option I see is to sell him to a club like Barca or Inter that is in another league and will have less impact on our future in the league at least.ibraBarca mentioned many times, doesn't nearly fit in their system, not ever going to happen.NoelUnless Liverpool was happy to sell him for 15 million and he was happy to sit on the bench waiting for the five times a year they need a Plan B because they're perfectly happy with a 50-goal a year false-nine leading the line, then absolutely, Barcelona's not a viable destination.
JerodDon't feel like saying much. Just a sad day, really.
It's the moment we've been dreading since May, and somewhere, deep down, we all knew it was inevitable (though, admittedly, I never believed it'd be for the likes of Chelsea).
Here's hoping for an expedited and fastidious deal, an obscene transfer fee, and a thorough 0-5 rollicking at the Bridge come Sunday next.EdJesus, I didn't even think about next Sunday.
*CHUG*Red2deathSo... did the request come before or after he knew Suarez was confirmed?NoelThe club says he made the official request tonight, so... yeah, it's post-Suarez. Which genuinely shocks me. Chelsea is aging, looks unlikely to win the league this year, and will have troubles under FIFA's new financial rules. And the timing is just bizarre: new owners, new Suarez, get rid of Hodgson, show commitment to winning, etc., etc., and then Torres of all people submits a written request three days before the end of the window? I would have believed it--and understood it--if he'd angled for a move to Spain/Italy/Germany back in the summer with Rafa gone and no new owners in sight, but I just don't get it. The situation, the timing, the player... it doesn't add up. I know he's a professional footballer, so I don't expect him to be a lifer, but this is just... strange, and on the surface seems ridiculously beyond mercenary.
Which I suppose is why it rang so false and I was so quick to dismiss it. Drat?
YannSounds as though Torres has wanted to go all along but not wanting to leave LFC in the lurch, given the bad taste it would leave, he has waited until a replacement striker was in the bag before making his true desires known. And don’t forget, he would have got advanced warning from his manager, Pep Guardiola's brother, who also manages Suarez.Red2deathI agree. If it's post-Suarez then it's definitely weird. In that case, he should have submitted it a month ago to drum up interest among suitors and give himself more options. Given that there's apparently nothing LFC could have done in the past month to change his mind...EdHard to tell, as this has been leaking slowly over the past few days...inclined to say it doesn't much matter, unfortunately.Red2deathHalf hoping it was just Torres' last ditch effort to say sign a good player this window or I'm leaving - and I'm dead serious.
Then again, can't really blame him for wanting to go. In all likelihood Liverpool won't be in the CL next season, and unsure for the season after that. Torres has already lost some of his pace and he needs to go for big trophies at club level before he's completely over the hill. Just never thought it'd be for Chelsea - he doesn't seem to be that kind of guy.BgurakanI hope Suarez can fill his shoes - the pressure is on for next season - need CL football. Anyway , good luck to himGUS_REDhopefully torres and suarez will gel and he [fernando] might be inclined to stay longer, but i also understand his motivation to win trophies. discounting WC10 (in which he was horrible), when was the last time he won silverware? Euro 2008? He knows that Lpool aren't going to be collecting silverware for some point in the near future, so he's taking his luck with Chlesea i guess.Red2deathI'm surprised.
Never thought he would want to join another English club. But this proves I was wrong.
Anyway, if he wants to leave, the club shouldn't stand in his way. But definitely hold out for the best compensation possible.Sultz"We bought the lad from uraguay
via amsterdam where theyre all high,
Lu-IS-Suarez, Liverpools number 9"
Doesnt quite have the same ring to it... :(LFCI HOPE YOU DIE YOU DIRTY SCUMBAG. KENNY DO NOT LET HIM GO TO CHELSEA SEND HIM ABROAD OR ROT IN THE RESERVES UNTIL HIS CONTRACT IS UP THERES NO GOING BACK NOW HES LET US KNOW HOW HE FEELS AND IM LETTING U KNOW HOW I FEEL FUCK OFF TRAITOR I HOPE YOU FUCKEN DIE YOU CUNTJerodThis might be the wrong time, but I believe you're having trouble with your Caps Lock.RODsteven cohenIbraMakes sense...Suarez won't change another season without Champions league. Two more big signings might settle him down. LFC are at least 9 if not 12 points behind fourth place as Chelsea have a game in hand. another season not fighting for the title and playing in the Europa league, + too many empty promises...I'm not surprised. Defintely don't want him to go but on the bright side, if we could get $50 million, for someone who is somewhat injury prone, to find replacements, emotions aside, would be worth it. You could buy a high profile striker and high profile centre back with $50 million.
Again unless were are winning week in and week out, nothing will ease the pain of not playing in the Champions league two season in a row.zolahe also not contribute much to us in this season.SavsKeep till the summer, then sell him to the highest bidder. Kenny can then buy 3-4 world-class players with the money.Zolaagree !!!Bobok so Torres wants out let him go get as much as posible and move on.PhilI have to say that I am astonished by these revelations. I did believe Fernando Torres to be a man of his word, and I don't know if we'll be able to make him see out his contract if he decides not to play ball. The thought of him playing for chelsea is something I cannot envisage. I can't believe that he would do that much harm to a club and supporters that have stayed behind him and supported him through a bad time with form and injuries, just as he returns to something like himself.
I am truly shocked.AhmadHis request isn't surprising...the previous owners almost destroyed LFC. Poor lad must be frustrated with life [career-wise] at the moment. Still I expect the new owners want some time to build a new side.superscouserYes it's tough making £110,00 per week when he hasn't delivered for most of this season. If he wants to go let him and get as much as we can.Webb01Now he has put in the Request we must get the best deal 45-50million the Pressure is on Chelsea now they will want the deal done now not in the summer where other clubs will be in for him and get into a bidding war.
Sad to see him go but no one is bigger than LFC and we can invest in new world class player who see the future with usServicepointLets get 50m+ and maybe someone we could use from themblog comments powered by Disqus
