Liverpool Academy 16-04-11It’s been a long weekend with little to smile about for us United fans, thankfully there are positives to take out of it. With the limelight obviously focused on the first teams’ visit to Wembley for the FA Cup semi-final against City, the third meeting between these talented rivals in five weeks snook under the radar for most. Liverpool were by far and away the better of the two teams as the scoreline obviously suggests. Despite that, McGuiness will take the positives from a match that allowed him to introduce the next step on the footballing ladder to some of this years’ under 16’s squad.

Talented youngsters like Joe Rothwell, Matthew Wilkinson, James Wilson, Ben Pearson and Louis Rowley all made their Academy debuts while it was another run out in the team for Mats Daehli and Rafael Leao. The inexperienced line-up was pitted against a Liverpool side who are actively in the hunt for the Academy League title. They currently (including saturdays victory over us) lie in second place, three points behind leaders Everton but with two games in hand. Bearing all that in mind it was good to see Joe Coll make some good saves in goal and United hold their own for the majority of the first half. A promising performance from in form Tom Lawrence was the highlights of United’s first half performance with a rasping effort that tested the keeper from distance. Lawrence also showed some great footwork, excellent technical ability and an impressive range of passing (I won’t mention his awful tackle after 15 minutes!). Sean McGinty had a half chance to level the scores after Tony Silva had given Liverpool the lead but his header from a Lawrence corner went just wide. Soon after that it was Silva who extended Liverpool’s advantage to two going into the break. The second half was one way traffic with United’s youngsters, many of whom are still at school, battling well against an experienced team but finding it hard to compete. The positives are that they didn’t give up and weren’t just going to lie down and be beaten despite the gulf in fitness and know-how. Morgan added a third for Liverpool, Adorjan the fourth and a brace from ex United trialist Ngoo completed the rout. I’m sure there were no expectations put on the boys before they went out and the game served a great purpose for the manager to give the lads a taste of what to expect next season……it’s all about development.

Just as a footnote I thought I’d mention the crowd at Liverpool’s Academy on Saturday which was swollen for the visit of United. I bumped into an old guy in the car park and he said “Steven Gerrard must be playing today, I’ve never seen so many cars here!”……I nearly broke out into song with “Come to see United, you’ve only come to see United…..!” but I didn’t. Then during the second half, when we had nine under 16’s playing, a very intelligent and educated man next to me said “I don’t know how we managed to knocked out of the cup to these, they’re shite!”. Well my friend, your ignorance knows no bounds……then again, I wasn’t surprised?

Next league game is at Barnsley on the 30th April, (unless they fit the re-arranged game at home to Everton in this Saturday) unfortunately I won’t be at the Barnsley game but will file a report based on the TV coverage.
