Bolton Vs Spurs At The Reebok. Back To Earth With A Bang?

By: Robert Reed | November 5th, 2010
Bolton will look to make a monkey out of Bale.Bolton will look to make a monkey out of Gareth Bale.

So, Gareth Bale is now a mega star and will sweep all before him. His performance against Inter was unbelievable. He’ll win every game for us this season so the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League and even the Grand National are all in the bag. Since the Inter Milan game the phrase on everyone’s lips has been, ‘No right back can handle him.’ Well, didn’t the not so ‘mega star’ Phil Neville keep him quiet for virtually the full ninety minutes against Everton the other week?

That’s right, grim reality has returned. Tottenham travel to the Reebok Stadium on Saturday to take on a gritty Bolton side who undoubtedly didn’t get the memo. The fact is although Bale has put on some staggering displays this season, in the Prem he has been a little subdued. In fact in the last eight games our lethal boy wonder has contributed one assist and, well, that’s it. One assist in eight games. It’s a pity we aren’t playing Champions League football every week. Bolton are sure to single the chosen one out for some ’special attention’ so I foresee something of a quiet game for Bale (cue hatrick.)

Our other superstar, Rafael Van der Vaart, is out injured so Modric is likely to play in the hole behind whichever of our less than world class forwards we decide to put out. Defoe is pencilled in for the Arsenal game, but this is too early for him so I foresee Pavlyuchenko starting this one with Crouch on the bench. Hopefully, Bale will cause enough consternation that the Bolton defence take their eyes off our other attackers giving them a chance to cause some damage. We shall see.

One plus point could be that Harry will play either Sandro or Palacios in Van der Vaart’s absence. This is a game where we could do with some muscle in midfield I think, and removing the temptation to go gung ho is probably a good thing.

article-0-02EF0E7F000005DC-330_468x319Another question entirely though is whether either of those players is up to the job. Sandro I like the look of. He is one for the future but at the moment looks a little raw and something of a yellow card magnet. Palacios, on the other hand, is suffering from a catastrophic loss of form which is looking set to see him bounced out of the club, maybe as soon as January. He showed a lot of promise early on in his Spurs career but of late has become a liability, giving the ball away repeatedly and looking like a player seriously lacking in confidence.

Inter Milan’s Sulley Muntari is tipped to join Spurs in January. Whether he is the answer to our midfield ball winning conundrum is questionable after an unspectacular show against Spurs on Tuesday. But Redknapp knows the player well from his days at Portsmouth, and in Harry we trust.

So which way will it go? I predict a narrow Spurs win. Probably by no more than one goal. We don’t do clean sheets, so somebody had better have their shooting boots on. My main worry though, is that Bolton’s enthusiasm to take high flying Spurs down a peg or two could prove costly. The last thing we need right now is an injury crisis.

COYS!
