For the upteenth time this season, Everton failed to secure a win despite being the better side. The Tofees came out of the gate determined to get a win, and dominated possession for long spells of the first half, although they were unable to create any real chances against the Chelsea defense. On the opposite side, Chelsea were able to get through the defense a few times, with Tim Howard being forced into a fine save to deny Chelsea what should have been a sure goal. After the break Everton once again dominated the game by closing down well on defense and controlling the tempo. Their hard work was rewarded with a corner kick goal by Louis Saha after he broke free from John Terry and finished with a brilliantly executed finish. Unfortunately Everton’s continued pressure resulted in a counter attack that resulted in Kalou who had just come on for an ineffective Frank Lampard to equalize with a fine strike. Although the Toffees pushed hard for a game winner, in the end the closest they could come was a fine strike by substitute Jermain Beckford that Cech tipped over the bar.
As usual Everton got themselves up to play against some top competition, and a few players managed to stand out. In the center of the midfield Fellaini was his usual self, and imposed his large frame on a number of players, and also did a good job of knocking down balls into the box, but unfortunately no one was making the runs onto them. On the left side it appears that Moyes is beginning to believe in Billy, as the Russian got a start on the left side and did a fantastic job working with Baines, and his creativity and cutting runs helped open up the Chelsea defense. Additionally Tim Howard did an outstanding job today when forced into action with several fine saves to keep Everton in the game.
Speaking of the Chelsea defense, the backline certainly looked old and slow today, inparticular John Terry did not have one of his better performances, and some of the faster players, in particular Seamus Coleman, were able to easy move past the defense on the flanks. Perhaps the biggest indictment of the Chelsea defense was that skipper Phil Neville, yes I did say Phil Neville, was able to get up and down the right side with ease, and was able to get around Ashley Cole several times. If Chelsea are going to make a run at the title, or even a run to Wembley, then the backline needs to get their act together or some defenders need to be brought in.
Of course things were not all roses for Everton, despite being the goalscorer for Everton, Louis Saha did not have a great game overall, losing the ball multiple times, and he also had some curious decisions when in open space. More and more it seems Saha is not very well suited to hold up play, because when Beckford came on for the last 5 minutes, Saha looked a little bit more settled on the ball and was able to link up well.
Additionally, Jack Rodwell did not have a great game, but that seemed to be more because he was invisible for most of it rather than anything he did to screw up. One area in particular where Rodwell was lacking was his awareness around the box. There were several times where a Rodwell run into the box could have resulted in at least a quality shot if not a goal. It is certainly something the young Rodwell needs to work on to help improve his game.
In the end this game was more disappointing than anything else because Everton did deserve to move on to the 5th round, but now the team has to head to Stamford Bridge in 3 weeks for a replay. At the least the positive from that will be the return of Tim Cahill to the team, and hopefully the Toffees can secure passage to the next round. Next up for Everton is a trip to the Emirates to take on Arsenal on Tuesday. What were your thoughts on today’s match, angry, resigned, disappointed? Sound of in the comments, and until next time COYB!
