It’s growing in popularity, it’s cheap to follow and it’s great to watch. Academy league football is inevitably set to thrive over the coming seasons as the average price of a Premier League ticket soars towards £50 and beyond. Add to that the fact that we, Manchester United, currently have some of the most promising and highly thought of youngsters in the country, it’s good to know what’s happening just beneath the first team. My name’s Ian, I get to watch the Academy and the Youth Cup games and now I’m fortunate enough to have this platform to share the news and my views on everything that’s happening at Academy level. I write comprehensive match reports (or at least I like to think I do) and I’ll also give my opinion on a variety of matters from performances to signings.
“What makes you think you’re qualified to comment on it?”………..Well, I started standing in the Stretford End and sitting in the K-Stand with my Dad from 1979/80 when I was five, I was there with Gary Bailey encouraging the K-Stand in ‘84 v Barcelona and Maradona, I remember the wooden stairs and the wheelie-carts that sold the sweets, I’ve seen Dennis Bailey AND Ronaldo get hat-tricks at Old Trafford, I’ve been to Wembley, Cardiff and the ‘New’ Wembley to watch cup finals, I was there in Rotterdam in ‘91, I was there in ‘99 at Villa Park and the Nou Camp, I’ve had seats launched at me in Turin, I’ve seen John Terry miss that penalty and I also stomached Rome, not to mention had trials with the club at 16 but sadly……it wasn’t to be.
